    Aynur

Thanks ) everyone is entitled to go in the direction they choose to go and yes what you said makes sense.

I know that most sunni/shia muslims will view non-hijabs as not religious because of the connotations associated with a girl wearing the hijab. It?s like a formed stereotype..

If you look at the muslim world for example in particular Australia (I can relate to that not sure about other places) around 10 years ago, the concept of hijab wasn?t as heavy as it is now. Before it would be normal to see older women not wearing hijab and if a younger girl did wear it, it would be like ?oh so cute?.

Now a days if people don?t wear it they consider it like disrespect of the self or as arabs say ?3aab? like rude? it?s like she has no humility. It?s turned into a social concept more than a religious duty of what is right and wrong for a particular age. It?s similar in western /non muslim societies in which they comment on a older lady dressed like a ?teenager?.

Unfortunately people do tend to judge on appearance but that doesn?t start or end on muslims. Basically you can?t change that but you can change people?s views of you through your deeds, your actions. I have a sister who doesn?t wear the traditional hijab and people say ?oh shes so nice and kind hearted and good and this and that, but she doesn?t wear hijab?. They throw it in as a comment as if she is neglecting something but they recognise her good attributes. So be it, if you try to please everyone you?ll die a failure and miserable.

Maybe you can say yes I don?t wear the traditional hijab but I do my best in following the command of God by wearing longer garments.. for example. Maybe suggest it?s not about choosing to disobey Allah because I am obeying his command (refer back to the particular verse) and besides none of us a free from sin. Challenge them to prove you?re disobeying? Maybe?

Why I believe hijab isn?t such a bad thing is well it does reflect an identity that I am a muslim, and it reflects my culture. I do not believe Quran is against culture but is against enforcing culture as a religious obligation or that placing it above your duty..

    Take this verse for example
4913 (Asad) O men! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female, and have made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come to know one another. Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of God is the one who is most deeply conscious of Him. Behold, God is all-knowing, all-aware.

I?m no expert at tafsir but to me it?s like our cultures are part of our identity, you can take and leave what you don?t like but it doesn?t mean you need to expel it out of your life, inevitably you will have influences.

Muslims around the world reflect hijab differently, take for example people from Pakistani, India, Bangladesh, their sari?s don?t exactly cover their hair (completely) but they wear it, they reflect their identity and I guess to them that is respecting their identity.

In Iran and Emirates women show the tops of their hair (not all). like in emirates women would wear long abaya?s long loose dresses generally all black and then have a scarf styled with half their hair styled and like 10kgs of makeup haha off course not all people do it like that though it?s a common practice.

In Saudi Arabia I got told by a brother who used to live there that there are areas in which women do not cover their faces, and that the face covering is very cultural based, and that if a women decided not to walk out covered they?d find it offensive. I know Saudi likes to spin off a religious association to it, but it reflects culture.

Again not all people choose to follow this cause of identity. Also something to keep in mind culture changes through generations.
As I said before I wore hijab because I thought it was a religious obligation. This is what I was taught, that muslim women wear the scarf. So I thought I must do this. I wore it before my mother wore it, I didn?t question the need to research that this is a religious obligation, I trusted my teachers, I was still a kid so I accepted her word and decided to wear it. Funnily my parents were against me wearing it which made me want to wear it even more. Then they decided if I wanted to wear it, it was my choice. So I wore it.

So the way I wear hijab covers the necessary besides that I gain respect in my community. To me it?s like a reminder, I have an identity automatically associated upon me, my actions are important so I am more conscious of them. because I wouldn?t want to represent myself in a bad light to give other muslims a bad rep. So it keeps me focused. I?ve been wearing it for almost 14 yrs? to just take it off wouldn?t be comforting also I have other external influences which would compel me to keep wearing it.

ok that's abit long i'll leave it there

    Salam )

    Salaam sister
I agree there is no harm in using head cover "Khimaar"

I am not a "muftee" or "scholar" to give some opinion. But as you pointed out it is considered to be very nice and respectable in certain societies.
One should not criticize either way.

head cover is only one possible meaning of "khimaar", and when the evidence is weighed, the lesser likely meaning. The more likely meaning is simply any "cover". See

Was there a mention of "head" or "hair" in 2431 and for it to be covered or did I miss something here ?

What desires you mean? I wasn't talking about any desires. I was talking that women are characteristically far more trapped in vanity, that kind of vanity, than men. In fact women are so much trapped and society is so agreable that women be trapped that for many people in fact that is a proof of feminity. And the fact that women are not alone in surgery and the other things, does not mean that they make up the bulk, and that fashion industry and cosmetics are in a great proportion discharched on women and averybody seem to see that as natural and promotable and tends to expect if o a woman. And many women fall for it. So Qur'an hels them not to become a prey of that.

                Salaam

When I responded to your post, I had this verse in my mind

                3359

O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the women of the believers, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons which is more convenient that they should be known and not harmed. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

So Lane's Lexicon has more authority than another source? Is that what it says in your Quran? My authority is Al Quran and what God has given me to understand it.

But thanks for indirectly admitting "khimaar" not only means "headcover" by your telling use of "primary meaning".

I will tell you how The Quran comes into it. Assuming that both you and I try to follow The Quran, when you said source XYZ has no authority and referred me to Lane, I asked is that what it says in your Quran? i.e. does it tell you how to distinguish how one source has more authority than another and thus reject one over the other? If you cannot answer this question with reference to The Quran, then we can only assume your rejection of one source over another has no Quranic basis, that was my point.

Perhaps if you had bothered to read the link, you would have seen it provides verses from The Quran and linguistic evidence. Does your Quran teach you to reject without reading/consideration? If so, please tell us where, so we can distinguish who is a follower of The Quran and who is not.

Linguistic meaning is only one part. If it was only a matter of linguistics as you seemingly allege, then why does The Quran ask us to utilse other avenues of knowledge/experience/information/etc See this link for the relevant verses from The Quran.
Thus, knowing Arabic is only one part. This is an undisputable Quranic FACT.

But do not worry, we all have our chains to break, including me. As Voltaire says "it is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere".

Arabic is very vast language. For "cover" there are more "Fifty words".For Reference please see "Thesaursu of Arabic" by Dr Hanna Ghalib.Al-Quran used particularly this word avoiding words which only mean "cover"."Khimaar" and "Naseef" are particularly used for "head cover".
The Dictionaries of Classical arabic are unanimous in its meaning of "Head Cover"

                              Ok I am confused.

I know Arabic has a number of words that mean the same thing or at least similar. Now what are you saying khimar means ?head cover? alone?

I?m not affluent in my Arabic so tell me the first line is supposed to be the reference or something else?

Ok the first reference refers to head and rest of body

The second confused me the brides tiara/crown? That does go on the head but doesn?t exactly cover it. so they refer it as a khimar as well?

I don?t understand the 3rd one. you say naseef means head cover too..

Last one refers to her head and everything else..

Also khumouron? Doesn?t that mean alcohol or is this like some root word or a word that has dual meanings or something?

So what are you saying based on these classical dictionaries khimar can only mean head cover?

so i guess your opinion on this matter is that a head cover is an obligation.

                                Dear Sister
"Khimaar " is very specific word for "female head cover". "Naseef" is used for both male and female head cover.
There are so many Non specific words in 'Arabic for "cover".But Quran specifically used this word for female that they should cover their breasts with "Khimaar".
Just imagine if someone asks you please pick up such and such person from the airport in your "car", then it is understood you are having and using that car that is why you are being asked to pick up in "your car".
In the same way It is understood that "khimaar " was being used by females as head covers and Quran instructed females to cover their breasts with that "Khimaar".
Otherwise Quran would have used some non specific word so that this confusion is not created. Quran says it is Clear and there is no Crookeness.

                                Regards

                                  peace Qstudent,

Thanks for displaying the strength of your argument by not answering my questions or responding to my points.

"Websites are not equavalent to Quran."? Thanks for the insight. Speaking of websites and insights, I also have one having sight is not equivalent to seeing.

                                  #############

                                  sister Sarah,

There is no need to be confused. For sake of argument, let's say ALL Classical Arabic Dictionaries (CAD) in the entire world state "khimaar" means "headcover", and if we wish to use non-Quranic evidence such as this, why not look to the traditional ahadith which clearly show it does not mean "headcover". Better yet, why not carbon date the two sources CAD versus ahadith, let's see which is older. If we find ahadith is older, then bingo, this will critically damage CAD's case. If we find ahadith are newer than CAD, then we can only assume someone forged these ahadith to give a more lenient meaning to khimaar in some sort of pro-women feminist conspiracy! And no-one said "hey, wait a second, khimaar does not mean any cover, who forged these ahadith?" As we can all see this is nonsensical, but quite amusing I might add.

Of course, the above is a sideline. AQ weights the answer in favour of "khimaar" not meaning "headcover", this is fact. Thus, it will come down to what a person gives more weight to, what AQ says or what CAD says (even if we assume they all say the same thing). Qstudent has already made clear what he takes as his authority.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

Haha the argument could be non ending

Off course Wakas we should take account of what Quran states otherwise we?d be following definitions of meanings from people not Quran.

Yes Quran is clear and free from crookedness? going on that note Quran is specific about the khimar covering a woman?s breasts not specific of the khimar covering her hair.

                                        This is not the question.

It shows that you do not know how to consult a dictionary. Your doubts would have been absolutely clear if could translate all of My DICTIONARY References. If you do not know that all dictionary of every language when give usages they usually say "it is said" which it is spoken or meant like this. This word "qeela" you can see in lisaan ul Arab and Tajul Aroos at many places. If you do not know that is not my fault.
It is the reason I gave so many references. If you feel difficulty to translate Arabic Dictionaries which I referred ,I will recommend to consult Lane's Lexicon under Khimaar.
As far as your second allegation is concerned you said.

Here is what this gentleman said

4-24 ----------seek them with your money , with an aim to maintain chastity, not fornicating, you must pay them their wages before you touch them , and when you have enjoyed them, there is no sin upon you what you both agree to. God is knowledgeable wise.

What I understand out of this is that "Prostitution is allowed" because,

                                          1. The "marriage/Nikah" word is missing from this very important commandment.

                                          2. You are to seek her with your money (in a normal relationship you dont seek the woman with your money, you seek them with your luv)

                                          3. You must pay her agreed wage before you derive sexual benefit, (so that you dont runaway after sex)

                                          http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=9598241.405
Now you can see who is lying ,you or I .
Did you refute or deny or condemn this "Quranic Certificate" ?
