How it does not violate a person's life?! It ruins it.
And it is a crime, even per the qur'aan
    2423

Lo! as for those who accuse the "muhsanaat", cursed are they in the world and the Hereafter. Theirs will be an awful doom

    244

And those who accuse the "muhsanaat" but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony - They indeed are evil-doers -

Okay I get what you mean. By "Slander", you mean falsely accusing someone of a crime, whereas I meant simply saying nasty things about someone in public.

I'd like to add that the kind of slander Samia was talking about should be illegal only if someone's accusing a muslim in a muslim court (which treats zina as a crime) and not if someone's slandering someone in a secular court because secular courts don't come under the great reading's jurisdiction. Even the great reading implies that slander can't always be prosecuted (2411-19).

        Salaam huruf, all

I agree that slander has its prescribed punishment, and so is public sex "zina". What I was talking about is idle gossip, like secrets of houses you enter or you come to know of, not necessarily related to sexual acts.

It's interesting to find that these verses

        2427

O ye who believe! Enter not houses other than your own without first announcing your presence and invoking peace upon the folk thereof. That is better for you, that ye may be heedful.
        2428

And if ye find no-one therein, still enter not until permission hath been given. And if it be said unto you Go away again, then go away, for it is purer for you. Allah knoweth what ye do.
        2429

(It is) no sin for you to enter uninhabited houses wherein is comfort for you. Allah knoweth what ye proclaim and what ye hide.

        follow these ones

        2411

Lo! they who spread the slander are a gang among you. Deem it not a bad thing for you; nay, it is good for you. Unto every man of them (will be paid) that which he hath earned of the sin; and as for him among them who had the greater share therein, his will be an awful doom.
        2412

Why did not the believers, men and women, when ye heard it, think good of their own own folk, and say It is a manifest untruth?
        2413

Why did they not produce four witnesses? Since they produce not witnesses, they verily are liars in the sight of Allah.
        2414

Had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy unto you in the world and the Hereafter an awful doom had overtaken you for that whereof ye murmured.
        2415

When ye welcomed it with your tongues, and uttered with your mouths that whereof ye had no knowledge, ye counted it a trifle. In the sight of Allah it is very great.
        2416

Wherefor, when ye heard it, said ye not It is not for us to speak of this. Glory be to Thee (O Allah)! This is awful calumny.
        2417

Allah admonisheth you that ye repeat not the like thereof ever, if ye are (in truth) believers.
        2418

And He expoundeth unto you the revelations. Allah is Knower, Wise.
        2419

Lo! those who love that slander should be spread concerning those who believe, theirs will be a painful punishment in the world and the Hereafter. Allah knoweth. Ye know not.

Thanks to Supernaut who drew my attention to them ;D

The only way we can understand quran is to leave behind all the preconceptions. Zina is called Fahisha in quran but Fahisha is not always related to sexual acts.

          peace

I have no problem with considering an evil and a fahisha malignant gossip and I can readily see that it is a sin and eating the neighbour's flesh. Thhe question is whether it is about that that speaks 4.15 and 4.16. To me it fits much better the prostituon question.
On the other hand I see no reason either to see it as more encompassing than just what Supernaut and I say and what Samia and others say. It doesn't have to be restricted to one category which happens to pop on translation. It may encompass more things. However, when it says filbuyut and not fi buyutihinna and see it as more fitting and benefitting for prostitutes.

              Salaam
