    Peace everyone

I have the timetable for Ramadan (London). It says fasting starts 409am, Fajr prayer 429am and Fast ends 810pm. However, sunrise for 23rd Aug is 559am and sunset is 2006pm. Is there a more natural way to observe the start of fast and end of fast?

    God Bless

    Hope

I have always been confused by Salt Al-fajr. I really am commiting myself now to find out what does it mean. I need to know the answer to these questions, because I am having a mind block! Obviously I cannot trust the Sectarian Prayer times that are being given out at the local "halal" butchers! (Yeah i know, that's another story!)

    ok, here are my questions

    What is al-Fajr?
    What is dawn?
    What is sunrise?
Does the morning "salat"/meditation/worship/prayer have to be done BEFORE the sunrise or BEFORE the dawn? Or is it AT the dawn or AT the sunrise?
Or if it means "metaphorical" start of day, does it simply mean when you get up, regardless of the position of the sun by then?
AND then, what is Falaq? As in Surah Al-Falaq? Is Falaq the same meaning of Fajr?

30 mins before dawn has been mentioned to me, I don't know if it is 30 mins before (dawn/sunrise) that is the prayer time or is it 30 mins before (dawn/sunrise) that you have to eat so that you have finished eating before there is light in the sky.

    verses containing dawn
    2187, 696, 1778, 5434, 975, 1131

    verses containing Sunrise
    1573, 2660, 375, 5517, 7040

put simply Is the morning prayer done while it is still dark?

thanks, May God increase us all in knowledge, and guide us and protect us.

      Date Sunset Dawn
      Today 2006 0522
      +1 day 2004 0524

      Salaam

I knew about two sorts of timing according to Central Mosque and rest of the Mosque but for safe side we followed the earlier time table.I have no idea why central Mosque started showing dawn at around half an hour difference since year 2000.
I think it was sun rise today at 05.56.

        Peace,
        Respectfully.

I think you're mistaken, because i got the timetable from London Central Mosque (London) and it says like this

DATE PRAYER PRAYER BREAKING OF THE FAST
        23., Avg., 2009 - fajr/0347 -- maghrib/2009 -- layl/2217
        24., Avg., 2009 - fajr/0347 -- maghrib/2009 -- layl/2217
        25., Avg., 2009 - fajr/0355 -- maghrib/2003 -- layl/2208
        26., Avg., 2009 - fajr/0355 -- maghrib/2003 -- layl/2208
        27., Avg., 2009 - fajr/0355 -- maghrib/2003 -- layl/2208
        28., Avg., 2009 - fajr/0402 -- maghrib/1954 -- layl/2156
        29., Avg., 2009 - fajr/0402 -- maghrib/1954 -- layl/2156
        30., Avg., 2009 - fajr/0402 -- maghrib/1954 -- layl/2156
        31., Avg., 2009 - fajr/0402 -- maghrib/1954 -- layl/2156

I eat until fajr salah, then i pray and sleep some more.
Gotta make some unhealthy sandwiches for the businessmen in the CITY, lool, lol.
        Peace.

        Peace Alen

My deffinition from my understanding of the starting of fast and ending of fast is from Dawn till Dusk. What is your understanding? Also I woke up early this morning to witness the dawn. I Saw it close to 5am in the morning so I really dont know where they are getting these times from. According to this website http//www.gaisma.com/en/location/london.html
Sunrise is at 0559am and dawn is at 0522am for today. Also, Sunset is at 2006pm and dusk is at 2042pm. If fasting is from dawn till dusk then todays fast should start 522am till 2042pm. Whats you input on this? I have 2 timetables here from two different mosques and they vary slightly.

          fajr = dawn
It starts when you see the first ray of light of the day.

"...You may eat and drink until the white thread is distinct from the black thread of dawn; then you shall complete the fast until night..." (2187)

          white thread = sunray
          black thread = darkness

At dawn it is both night and day, and it starts from when you see the first ray of light. It lasts until full sunrise (when the sun is fully above the horizon). So you should begin your fast when you see the first light at dawn (when night merges into day) and this is also the time for the fajr (dawn) salat. Breaking the fast is to be done at sunset, since the Quranic night starts at sunset (and lasts until dawn).

I am no longer a Sunna-rejecter. See 4:59-65, 62:2-4, 3:31, 4:156, 7:157 Messenger teaches and is to be followed and obeyed. Examples of revelation received which is not in the Qur'an: 3:123-126, 33:37, 2:187, 66:3, 62:9.

Can you explain a little more about what you mean a Quranic night? I am a little confused now. If we are to break the fast at sunset then we are not breaking the fast at dawn some 30 minutes or so early. Also what do you make of the dawn and dusk timmings in the website http//www.gaisma.com/en/location/london.html

            Peace

              Breaking the Fast at Sunset/Dusk

?It has been made lawful for you during the night of
fasting to approach your women sexually. Th ey are
a garment for you and you are a garment for them.
God knows that you used to betray your souls so He has
accepted your repentance, and forgiven you; now you
may approach them and seek what God has written for
you. And you may eat and drink until the white thread
is distinct from the black thread of dawn; then you
shall complete the fast until night; and do not approach
them while you are devoted in the temples. Th ese are
the boundaries of God, so do not transgress them. It
is thus that God clarifi es His revelations to the people
who they may be righteous.? (Qur?an 2187)

God tells us that we are to fast until night has come. Yet,
the masses insist on blatantly disobeying His command
by breaking the fast while there is still light, i.e. at sunset,
based on the innovation of the Hadiths.

Peace Hope, yes I am on your wavelength here! I find it bizarre that the length of time between dawn and sunrise is supposedly 2 hours according to some prayer timetables when according to websites such as timeanddate.com it paints a different picture! My sunrise for today was 619am according to timeanddate.com. Haven't been able to find out what dawn is, but I knocked off 2 hours to work out the dawn and ate and prayed 30 mins before that. It was pitch black.

I noticed last night, on my friend's timetable it said break the fast at 8.15pm, but there was still light in the sky! it still looked like day to me! but then 30 mins later (8.45pm), it was actually properly dark. but they had Isha down as 10pm...

Brother Rev John, you are an astro physicist, please can you shed some light (no pun intended LOL!) on how long does it take for the sun to set? i mean, from the horizon starting to cover the base of the sun to it covering the top of the sun.
                30 mins or 2 hours?

cos if it is only 30 mins, then logically wouldn't maghrib and isha have to be only be about 30 mins apart on the timetable?

and i cannot see the horizon from where i live. i'm surrounded by blocks of apartments!

                peace all

I make the difference between sunrise and dawn to be about 30mins not 2 hours. Then again I could be wrong. Can someone shed light on this with evidence? !

Don't get your info from that website. Go to an 'Islamic website' and check the prayer timetable. Add 5-10 mins to Maghrib and you have your breakfast time. The time to start fasting is the same as the start of fajr (dawn) salat.

and the sunset and dusk ones seem to be correct, according to what I witnessed yesterday (by looking at the light in the sky; I could not see the sun on the horizon myself)

The sunrise one agrees with timeanddate.com but i did not see the dawn (didn't want to open the metal shutters at 4am to look for it in case i woke the baby up!!!)

Thank you for your reply. If night = sunset till sunrise then day time should = sunrise to sunset? So we should start the fast at sunrise if we follow your definition (or shall I say the popular definition). I make the difference between timetable start fast to sunrise to be a difference of about 2 hours.

                        Just a quick round up

Start fast - 409am (on my timetable) or 522am (dawn), reference purposes sunrise = 0559am

End fast - 810pm (TT) or 2042pm (Dusk), reference purpose sunset = 2006pm

May Allah accept our fast and give His blessings and guide us

                        Peace

                          Peace,
                          Respectfully.

I see the first light and for me that is the dawn, the actual sunrise is the sunrise but day needs around 2 hours to open and also close, so the time between first light and actual sunrise, is the time to pray fajr salah, God willing. Before that time, i eat.

Same goes for the night. When the sun sets, it is evening, or maghrib, and until the actual night, total disappearance of the sun's rays, it is maghrib - prayer time and not time to eat. When the last rays of the sun are gone and the sky is black, it is layl, right? Then, i believe it is night according to The Quran.

I have just arrived from the prayer and i was praying maghrib salah. It was 2009 and the sky was blue, not black. Therefore, that is maghrib, right? When i step outside and see that there is no light in the sky at all, from any side, then that will be night, time to eat, God willing.

                          This is what i believe.
                          Peace.

Breaking the fast is at the time of maghrib plus 5-10 mins.

                            Peace,
                            Respectfully.

2187 It has been made lawful for you during the night of fasting to approach your women sexually. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. God knows that you used to betray your souls so He has accepted your repentance, and forgiven you; now you may approach them and seek what God has written for you. And you may eat and drink until the white thread is distinct from the black thread of dawn; then you shall complete the fast until night; and do not approach them while you are devoted in the temples. These are the boundaries of God, so do not transgress them. It is thus that God clarifies His revelations to the people who they may be righteous.

921 By the night when it covers.

Maghrib is not night, is it?
God has seperated the two - maghrib is blue and layl is black, would you agree?
                            God knows best.
                            Peace.

Yes, i know, i was just discussing it with few other sunnis and one guy who accepted Islam two years ago but cannot make up his mind what to follow - The Quran or hadith.

Night (Layl) starts at sunset, yes, but in The Quran, as i have quoted few moments ago, it says

If I tell you to run until you have crossed the finish line, do you run across the finish line AND THEN continue another 200 meters? Similarly, when God says fast UNTIL the night (which starts at sunset) he means that we should fast UNTIL the night, and not wait until it is fully dark/fast untill half of the night has passed. BTW, in 1778 the phrase/term "ghasq al layl" is used - if layl would be already understood as the period of the day (24 hours) when it is fully dark, then why is "ghasaq" (darkness) used? The phrase "darkness of the night" would be useless if night would be the time of the day (24 hours) where it is completely dark. Hope you understood.

This is not correct as at 05.22 it was too bright to call it until dawn, I could see the emerging sun rays on the sky. nope

                                          Peace Alen,

here is definition of layl as per quran

                                          3637

                                          Yusuf Ali

                                          And a Sign for them is the Night We withdraw therefrom the Day, and behold they are plunged in darkness;

Siin-Lam-Kha = to flay, pluck off, withdraw, strip off.

Layl/Night doesn't mean total obscurity. Night must have some light to strip away, thus this excludes pitch black as "layl", leaving only one possibility pitch black + the two twilight periods.

                                          Peace
