    Salaam, brothers and sisters

I have been thinking for some time over the fact that although we are very happy about not stoning anybody for adultery, 100 lashes (if it is lashes), is no joke. In fact I ask myself what 100 lashes can do to a person, specially a woman. That is why I am wondering whether there is more behind what seems at first sight through the filter of 1.600 years. ?Was jalada what we understand now as jalada?

I have been looking through internet to see how this punishment is delivered nowadays. It seems that in Saudi Arabia, it is not a lah but a baton, and isused over the clothes. The person is throughly examined for physical fitness to undergo the punishment and not all strikes are given on the same lot. May be 15 one week, 15 the next, etc.

Of course, as verybody else here, I am aware that to reach a verdict of zina is very, very very difficult so that the punishment would be very rare and unusual. Nonetheless, I think the matter merits a more thorough consideration.

Therefore I would be very grateful for whatever insights the compannions of this forum could give.

    Salaam

Jald is skin. I read 24/2 as to 'skin' the person 100 times, that is to expose him or her to the community 100 times. This is done to show his or her unworthiness to be a faithful partner.

well, you're right but the member aked about the word jalada not jald by the way it's jeld "skin in english" .

the term is taking from the verb "Jalada" which means lash in english and the meanings of this word in Arabic is strike the skin of the person (according to a sin first).

Yeah, if you look at how 'jild' (not jald, my mistake, thanks to thereformer for correction) is used, it shows maximum exposedness. 4/56 is an example of this. This is the root meaning, a meaning which is tied to a physical signifier. Therefore, I take all other meanings to be derived. Ajlidu therefore must have the same connotation, which is to expose the person.

So why does exposing the person contradict the rest of the ayah? Can you be clearer please?

so you're telling me getting EXPOSED, i.e. publicising your act of betrayal and lust is not a punishment? What is it then, an eulogy?

And of course they are witnesess, that's what being exposed does!

Well they are exposed whereby people have seen them and this is the punishment prescribed in the first line of the verse. Then do you think the last line is superfluous

                                    Free-Minds Translation

242 The adulteress and the adulterer, you shall lash each of them with one hundred lashes, and do not let any pity overtake you regarding the system of God if you believe in God and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.

abdalquran how can you interpret that as expose them publicly? You can't reinvent the Koran.

No, I disagree>>> jald doesn't mean expose and it will never mean expose the person, the only meaning is flog the person on his skin. that's it . no more interpretations.
