    Salaam bros n sistas,

It always amuses me when some traditional muslim friend tells me how dogs are the most evil and hated creatures on earth. whatever These guys then go on to show many "proofs" by stating some hadiths like
--I heard Allah's Apostle saying; "Angels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature." (Hadith - Bukhari 3515, Narrated Abu Huraira)

--The Prophet said, "Were dogs not a species of creature I should command that they all be killed; but kill every pure black one."

--Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever keeps a dog, one Qirat of the reward of his good deeds is deducted daily, unless the dog is used for guarding a farm or cattle." (Hadith - Bukhari 3515, Narrated Abu Huraira)

Learning such hadiths, muslims view the dogs as something dirty and evil. Some even believe it to be satan himself! For these ppl, i just have one solid answer that will prove like the light of day, how they reject the signs of Allah and believe in things that have no basis. See below the verses from the Quran that show the story of the 7 sleepers in the cave
"You would think that they were awake, when they were in fact asleep. We turned them to the right side and the left side, while their dog stretched his arms in their midst."- Quran 1818

Some would say, "They were three; their dog being the fourth," while others would say, "Five; the sixth being their dog," as they guessed. Others said, "Seven," and the eighth was their dog. Say, "My Lord is the best knower of their number." - Quran 1822

Why would Allah give so much importance to the dog as being one among his best servants if the animal was as these hadithists say a despicable creation of the devil? The sleepers in the cave were protected by Allah for around 300 years. If Allah were to allow the dog to be protected along with them, that can only show that Allah approves of the dog as being man?s companion. This only proves without a doubt that the Prophet could have never uttered such hadiths that go against the very essence of the Holy Quran. The dog is the creature that has been man?s best friend throughout history. This animal has a God given gift to bring happiness into people?s lives. It serves many important roles in our lives as most are aware of. Therefore it doesn?t make sense that the Prophet would trash the animal and warn us against it.

May Allah guide us in the right path.
    Peace.
    -Harris

          Peace harris

I agree with your views. And dogs are some of the most intelligent animals on earth

          http//scienceray.com/biology/zoology/top-15-smartest-and-most-intelligent-animals/

Below are some absurd or strange fabricated hadiths about dogs.

Do not enter a house where there is a dog

Book 1, Number 0227 Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said Angels do not enter the house where there is a picture, or a dog, or a person who is sexually defiled.

Dogs should be killed, Dogs should not be killed

Book 16, Number 2840 Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah
The Prophet of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) ordered to kill dogs, and we were even killing a dog which a woman brought with her from the desert. Afterwards he forbade to kill them, saying Confine yourselves to the type which is black.

Dogs can be used for hunting

          Book 16, Number 2850 Narrated AbuTha'labah al-Khushani
The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said to me AbuTha'labah, eat what returns to you by your bow and your dog.
Ibn Harb's version adds "The trained (dog), and your hand, then eat, whether it has been slaughtered or not slaughtered".

The price paid for a dog is impure

Book 23, Number 3414 Narrated Rafi' ibn Khadij
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said The earnings of a cupper are impure, the price paid for a dog is impure, and the hire paid to a prostitute is impure.

The price paid for a dog is not accepted

          Book 23, Number 3421 Narrated AbuMas'ud
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) forbade the price paid for a dog, the hire paid to a prostitute, and the gift given to a soothsayer.

The vessel a dog has used should be washed 7 times

Book 002, Number 0548 Abu Huraira reported The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said
When a dog drinks out of a vessel belonging to any one of you, he must wash it seven times.

Animals and the voracious dog are harmful and should be killed in the state of ihram

Book 007, Number 2718 A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah'* Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying
Five are the harmful things which should be killed in the state of Ihram or otherwise snake, speckled crow. rat. voracious dog, and kite.

              Peace,
              Respect.

Dogs and cats can sense epileptic seizures before humans get them, so these animals actually can save lives.

Iran cleric says dogs "unclean", not to be kept as pets
                Sat Jun 19, 2010 306pm IST

(Reuters) - A senior Iranian cleric has decreed dogs are "unclean" and should not be kept as pets -- a move aimed at discouraging Western-style dog ownership in the Islamic state, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Dogs are considered "unclean" under Islamic tradition but, while relatively rare in Iran, some people do keep them as pets.

By issuing a fatwa -- a religious ruling -- Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi has sent a clear message that this trend must stop.

"Friendship with dogs is a blind imitation of the West," he was quoted as saying in Javan daily. "There are lots of people in the West who love their dogs more than their wives and children."

Guard dogs and sheep dogs are considered acceptable under Islamic law but Iranians who carry dogs in their cars or take them to public parks can be stopped by police and fined.

The Koran does not explicitly prohibit contact with dogs, Shirazi said, but Islamic tradition showed it to be so. "We have lots of narrations in Islam that say dogs are unclean."

The interpretation of religious rules on personal conduct is a constant source of debate and potential conflict in Iran which has been an Islamic republic since a revolution ousted the Western-backed Shah in 1979.

In a television interview last week, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad weighed in on the issue of the Islamic dress code, saying women who fail to cover their hair completely should not be harassed by the police.

Morality police are conducting their annual crackdown and women who reveal strands of hair are liable to be stopped in the streets for failing to respect the dress code, or "hijab".

Ahmadinejad's surprisingly liberal view was condemned by fellow hardliner politicians and senior clerics "I wish he had not said those words about the hijab," Grand Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati told the faithful during the week's Friday prayers, in a rare criticism of the president.

"We are grappling with many problems including economic and political ones but the issues of morality and ethical security are among the important issues that cannot be ignored," he said.

Tehran University has set up a thinktank "to investigate the problems related to hijab", the representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to the university announced on Monday.

So they have very serious economic and political problems, but women's clothing is one of the most important ones.

My uncle had several dogs. Each had it's own personality and some were a bit nutty. His last dog is hardly what you would call a guard dog. His bark was bigger than his bite and when like bugs were around he'd growl at them, haha.

Personally, I prefer bigger dogs. Huskies are beautiful, but I would never get a purebred dog; there are countless mutts in need of a loving home, so I'm not really in favour of breeding.

Dalia, It depends on your lifestyle and what you are looking for from a dog. It really depends on the dog. No two dogs are alike. As an example, I have worked with German shepherds who just weren't very smart. And this is a breed of acute intelligence.
Huskies are gorgeous, but have very high energy. Not sure if they are the best If you live in the city. They require lots of exercise due to their high level energy (iirc, huskies could walk for a week without food/water) and have a mind of their own; very stubborn. Not recommended for first time owners. Some info here
They also 'talk' a lot (not bark, but howl etc). Due to their independent nature, they are not watchdogs.

i took my friends dog for a walk yesterday shes got a jack russell terrier, hes pretty small but the most excitable dog in the world. his bark is bigger than his bite and himself three times over! wasnt that easy to take care of him.

Jackies are craaazy. Be preprared to do jumping jacks along with them.

Small dogs yap too much for my taste.

Not a fan of small dogs either.

Rotties and Great Danes are more my thing. Also like German Boxers.

I love Great Danes. Many years ago, when I just started university, I was doing an internship in an advertising agency and they had one of those. Walking him every morning was part of my duties, lol.

Yeah, they're like mini-horses. And so gentle too.
