I have read different things. Some say that the real place is in Al Quds, Jerusalem, where the Temple Mount once stood which is now The Dome of the Rock. Heres an article that elaborates more on this idea.

For me it makes a lot of sense, however you should look on and research this question on your own instead of following others ideas. God is the best teacher.
Theres also the idea that Masjid Al Haram isnt a physical place. Forgot the article on that one sorry.

My current understanding is that "al-masjid al-haraam" is a common noun as used in the Qur'aan, and means "the inviolable institution of obedience".

Are you sure that in Arabic ,( ) words are used as "common nouns " as you have mentioned.
Or this is some classical Quran lovers'interepretation as usual. -

restrictedbecause there is no fighting allowed therin (a santuary of sorts).To find the location of the Temple simply by going with the title
masjid haramis a nearly impossible task. The Quran is full of more information regarding this subject, which, when you put together (tarteel) you will get the full picture (God willing).P.S. Welcome to the forum.

masjid haramis a nearly impossible task"If someone puts up a title "Masjid Al Haram" in front of a building somewhere, would we believe it? No. We'd rather research what's the real Masjid Al Haram from attributes/context of Masjid Al Haram which is said in the Quran. Same goes for what other people put up the name for the one in Saudi Arabia - we must still verify it.
By the way, (off-topic) if some would say that the focal point would mean the point where you face during a "namaaz" - that contradicts with 2115, 574, 587
Layth's resarch regarding this "dome of the rock" was a really good theory that complies/clarified with many points throughout the Quran.
For example, why are there so many times in the Quran that tells the prophet to "tell the people of the scripture" and "O people of the scripture" and "O children of Israel". Or even that Muhammad and Jesus probably had a part that was the same type of audience the children of Israel (240,2112 with 616; Jesus was also saying "O children of Israel".
Then see 616 again, it also goes along very well - I understand Jesus told the Children of Israel that there will be a next messenger coming to them with a message that would say to them "O children of Israel" again.
How could this logically happen if Muhammad was so far away in a distant desert in the so-called "Mecca" of Saudi Arabia and never went to Jerusalem except for the night of stepping on the rock according to their Hadith? The children of Israel moved to Mecca? Jews of Mecca - how many? Jesus was talking to the Children of Israel in "Mecca"? What if Mecca means "destruction" in its only occurance at 4824... That might go along as well.Let's be patient and research sincerely step by step.
Whatever the conclusions that one might come to, let's keep in mind that 2134 and 2141 tells us that the details of the nations that had passed away is rather not as important.

God most certainly is the focus, however there is no proper IMAGE of "God" we can bring up in our minds, so what we need to do is to ALWAYS HOLD THE IMAGE OF GODLIKE BEHAVIOR" in our minds, always see our persons RESPONDING in the proper way to lifes events, no matter where we are in the world. No one has to travel anywhere to do that, we are all on equal playing field in that regard.
The masjid al haraam...sjd refers to submission and masjid is a place of submission....so masjid al haraam refers to he "place" where we submit to the restrictions(laws).
After pondering that for a long time I have come to realize that this is refering to the subconcious(nafs) which is where all laws are carried out. We are to always "face" this masjid because we should always be putting the proper seeds of behavor into this garden(salaat). We must guard our salaat(programming process).
