What did Abraham do first? Break an idle or break an idol?

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

        oh, that's an awesome question...

kind of like an Islamic koan.

i'd say first be broke out of the mode of ignorance and idle acceptance in place of seeking truth (idol worship) then he got out the hammer.

some of my favorite ayat are 675-79.

          From reference
koan noun in Zen Buddhism a nonsensical question given to students as a subject for meditation in order to demonstrate the uselessness of logical thinking.

An Islamic koan you say? I hope not!

To be fair, the wording of my question is a bit odd as I was trying to make a play on words.

"idle" has a few meanings but I primarily meant "not in active use".

I agree. So what would it come out to be if you were trying not to make a play on words? As in what's the question again? In plain wording? Or would it lose some of it's essence when phrased differently? peace

I can't resist the temptation to add another one and make three (without any need whatsoever for sure)

Break an idle or break an idol or break an I-doll?

                  Salaams All,

just for those who believe he broke stone idols or something.

Such a great man breaking other peoples stone idols!

Breaking other people idols- I don't think so, is it a righteous thing to do, is it?

The ayah's are talking about the people, those following Pharaoh's orders- I think.

Anybody ever heard of divide and rule.?

Using lanes (how I understand this episode)

                  2158
He caused a split, He divided them (people following Pharaoh's orders), from their chief/leader/Master (Pharaoh) so that they may turn to him.

And to think Muslims- and not muslims, used to go and break stone idols in Hindu temples for many hundreds of years how much of a muslim where they?

Any body who still thinks He broke stone idols then why not get together and going on a rampage- lets all break some idols and show them, hey!
                  ) just kidding.

                  God Bless.

                    It would be

What did Abraham do first? Break his own habit/pattern of idling (idling to spend time doing nothing or being idle) or beak an idol (as in the story in The Quran)?

Clearly, he had to stop idling (i.e. break an idle) to break an idol (promote change).

Becoming active comes first (i.e. changing yourself) ---> then change comes after (i.e. a change in conditions round about you)

similar to the wisdom "be the change you want to see in the world", e.g. see 1311.

That was the message I was trying to promote/convey/encourage/suggest.

Yes, that's what I thought you meant but good to have it clarified. On a more mundane level, it might be equated to say for example, maybe exercising or exerting oneself personally or for a greater cause. You know you have to since you've been sitting on it/avoiding/ignoring it...but to actually get up and do it thats a whole different story.

That was the message I was trying to promote/convey/encourage/suggest.

I like the associations as in with the quotes . It has a huge target area thus highly adaptable (personal ---> general), which is great.

                        Peace Wakas,

Yes, I find it correct that Abraham break the idle and He became active in his life by turn to God(Allah,Higher force,Universe) for his needs.

In fact that is the answers to our call, to ask The Higher Force of aid, what you ask for you get.

Therefore it's important to upheld a good communication with your fellow brothers and sisters your neighbours and the world.
Quran is a guideline to righteous behaviours and what happens to you if you go against good behaviours. It will only fall back on you so to uphold a good cause it's the advice The higher spirit revealed to us.

We should indeed be thankful that we have this guideline or else many more people would be lost and have no clues at all how to adhere to the good things in life. We are responsible for our thoughts because it's with our thoughts that we create the surroundings that make our life here on earth.

Yeah, I know that I have been very much addicted to the theory of " The Law Of Attraction" but I really have found so many "Aha" revelations when I read that book "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne.

I wished all read that book, it's very great and uplifting for our souls/minds.

                        Peace
                        Maria

Just curious- where is Abraham idling?

                            He broke an idol first.

Our behavior is a reflection of our thinking (mental state). What is in our heads translates into how we act, not the other way around.

I guess that (idleness) happens because people follow their emotions (idols). We mostly do things based on pleasure and pain. In the case of procrastination, not doing something painful is pleasurable until the pain of not doing it becomes greater than the pain of actually doing it. That's why we must control our emotions and not let our emotions control us. In other words, we must be at peace at all times, our reasoning unclouded by emotions.
And we can actually program our behavior by manipulating our likes and dislikes. We might convince ourselves that exercise is pleasurable, and that sitting around doing nothing is painful. Or that going out and helping people is better than not doing it.
The Quran says god doesn't change our state unless we change what's inside ourselves.

I quite agree in a general sense. It's interesting to break down individual reactions and see the causes/progression. Helps in analysing and whenever we do that, emotions tend to take a back seat when the brain/mind gets involved. It's more of a complete picture kinda thing with individual stages and imo balance is achieved when the scales stop swinging but swing they must for the process to complete in a way.

Well maria that isn?t what he looked at ? I think.

What on earth can one learn by looking at the stars or sun and the moon, or is there some scripture written on them?

                                      He actually learnt from experience.

676 Kawkabun? Check lanes. Remember some people take it that their children will provide them for the future.

                                      Shamas= avericousness and qamar= deception.

Abraham when overwhelmed by bad times, like when pharaoh orders them to slaughter their children, his son and other humans weren?t his rabb at all, neither the actions of deception nor avariciousness.

But Gods bond or their relationship

Rahman = Love and Mercy without regard to effort.
Rahim = continuous dispensing of rewards to the deserving.

Plus the other attributes/ descriptions/ qualities.

Was the only rabb-eternal sustainer, it is apart from Gods bond something you can apply everyday.

                                        Peace,

Well yes, of course he didn't saw something written on the stars etc but as you say he searched for the divine and by experience that evil cause more evil. Or that is actually how i see it. He turned to the right master who could provide the good things not pharao who was spreading horror and evil around.

He found the method to attract merci and goodness and peace.By viewing Pharao he saw the opposite.

What on earth can one learn by looking at the stars or sun and the moon, or is there some scripture written on them?

They are not constant, and couldn't possibly be the God, as people of that day claimed. I think you missed the point of Abraham's story. He used logic to draw his conclusion.
