  • combining root meanings of salat to form a unified meaning?
    M morningdew

    Peace Wakas,

I agree that to follow the Quran is what a believer or mumin would do. In the back of the mind or always on the mind in some way or another is the though of Allah and how he would have us live our life. To find this out we must study Quran.

Secondly, I never, as a general rule trust my own instincts. I do not know what that means a muslim or a believer. But, I do know that my instincts are generally what I have been raised to believe and I have found some very surprising differences when studying Quran. I can give you one example that comes to mind. As a christian I was and they still maintain that treating a person who sins or is living sinfully nice and politely is the best way to bring them closer to God...However, the Quran is clear when stating that the devil (and this is the sinful one) should be treated as an enemy.

Some people, namely christians, might state that this forum and others are actually rude when they have a garbage dump for certain posts..However, if one follows closely quran, treating sinfulness as garbage is actually what we should do.

In other words, Wakas, what I think you are saying is the believer will closely follow quran and not the senses when deciding good from evil.

The Quran does state that it is impossibe to use our own intelligence...we need guidance. And that guidance come only from Allah...

As I see this earthly life the biggest challenge is deciding which religion is correct! We know one is...And for sure only one because there is only one god. So which one?

  • combining root meanings of salat to form a unified meaning?
    M morningdew

    Peace wakas and all...

This did not bring much comments and in some ways that is sad because there really is much to be learned and many different thoughts on the subject I am sure.

For me, as a converted muslim, the little stuff has little value in meaning...For example, how to correctly say, spell, or even pronounce corectly the word salat or salaa...

However, the correct spelling and pronunciation I am sure is valuable. This could definately change the meaning of a word.

Secondly, root words might not themselves be accurate. The words in the Quran today are as we all know what is termed old Arabic and the meanings can change with time. People do not normally speak old Arabic in their homes on everyday terms...

However, we do as muslims know that Allah has promised to preserve the Quran. And the meanings are easy to gain.

Also, I have tried to gain some meaning between what is a muslim and a mumin. Seems the Quran is clear. You submit or surrender. That is the first step. From there one must live the life of Islam. One must give charity. And then one has become a believer.

So here is a small attempt to what I might realize this all means...Or what it might simply mean to me!

uphold the benediction (blessing, wishing well)

For a mumin, al quran could be regarded as the blessing. A mumin would also wish well according to its message/criteria/system. With this understanding in mind, one can relate it to a generalised concept of 'upholding the divine system'.

As the difference between a muslim and mumin is so clear. First speak, then action! So to uphold benediction would mean putting some action into the matter.
The one who with word of mouth wishes someone well is a muslim and the one who have taken some action to help a person gain some ease or blessing or well wishing is the mumin.

uphold the commendation (the act of praising, a message of affection/respect/approval, favourable representation in words, recommendation)

For a mumin, al quran is the message of affection/respect/approval, a favourable representation in words, and is most definitely regarded as the recommendation. With this understanding in mind, one can relate it to a generalised concept of 'upholding the divine system'

from dictionary.com n 1 an official award (as for bravery or service) usually given as formal public statement 2 a message expressing a favorable opinion; "words of approval seldom passed his lips"
The first meaning is praising, respect and so on.(more word of mouth)..the second meaning is more of action...
Does this mean Allah would have us literaly give awards to those who deserve it?

Peace! And thanks Wakas for causing me to think so deeply!

  • Need Arabic advice.
    M morningdew

I have a question about the verse 425 in Quran. The message translated the verse to say "protected women".

Other people who translated this line say "free believing women".

Free meaning unmarried. Protected meaning married.

However, it crosses my mind that protected believing women would have a different meaning than simply believing women.

    Could someone clarify?

I haven't been here in a while. However, I have a serious problem

I am having a situation in my life that has to go before the judge.

    It is quite scary!

My son won an insurance settlement as a result of his car accident however he will not get the money until he is 18 years old.

His father has been handling all the matters at hand until recently.

I received a letter from the lawyer to come in and speak with him about the matter.

My son's father has not taken the money and put it into an account as he was suppose to.

Right away after speaking with the lawyer I realized the problem. The lawyer wanted the money in an interest bearing account!

Is there any advice I can get to take before the judge on this matter?

  • Noah's son?
    M morningdew

    Peace,

The old translations lead one to believe that Noah's son was not of his family because of unrighteous deeds.

    011.046
YUSUFALI He said "O Noah! He is not of thy family For his conduct is unrighteous. So ask not of Me that of which thou hast no knowledge! I give thee counsel, lest thou act like the ignorant!"
PICKTHAL He said O Noah! Lo! he is not of thy household; lo! he is of evil conduct, so ask not of Me that whereof thou hast no knowledge. I admonish thee lest thou be among the ignorant.
SHAKIR He said O Nuh! surely he is not of your family; surely he is (the doer of) other than good deeds, therefore ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge; surely I admonish you lest you may be of the ignorant

While the new translation here seems to suggest that maybe his wife was impure?

    1. He said ?O Noah, he is not from your family, he was fathered illicitly, so do not ask what you have no knowledge of. I advise you not to be of the ignorant.?

    Any comments here?

  • Who is Jesus?
    M morningdew

    peace all,

I did not find any material on this subject so I will post a new topic about
    it.

As Marie has pointed out, in order to avoid baseless arguments does not mean we have to stop giving fruitful opinions, even if others are not in agreement with them. For example, not many agreed with me when I said that Jesus was not a product of a virgin birth. It is controversial, but not 'unprofitable' when we bring the proofs to the table, or the questions to the table.

Nabi, how do you use quran to come to this conclusion?

    1. She said ?My Lord, how can I have a son when no human has touched me?? He said ?It is thus that God creates what He wills, when He decrees a command, He merely says to it ?Be?, and it is.?

  • Women leaving their home when divorced?
    M morningdew

Quran 651 O you prophet, if any of you have divorced the women, then they should be divorced while ensuring that their required interim is fulfilled, and keep count of the interim. You shall reverence God your Lord, and do not evict the women from their homes, nor should they leave, unless they have committed a proven adultery. And these are God's limits. And anyone who transgresses God's limits has wronged his soul. You never know; perhaps God will make something come out of this.

    (651) O you the prophet, if you divorced the women, so divorce them according to their term, and calculate the term (menstrual cycle) and fear and obey The God, your Lord. Do not bring them out from their houses, and they do not get out except that they commit an atrocious deed, and those are The God's limits, and who violates The God's limits, he had caused injustice to his soul, you do not know, maybe The God causes after that a new situation.

    065.001
YUSUFALI O Prophet! When ye do divorce women, divorce them at their prescribed periods, and count (accurately), their prescribed periods And fear Allah your Lord and turn them not out of their houses, nor shall they (themselves) leave, except in case they are guilty of some open lewdness, those are limits set by Allah and any who transgresses the limits of Allah, does verily wrong his (own) soul thou knowest not if perchance Allah will bring about thereafter some new situation.
PICKTHAL O Prophet! When ye (men) put away women, put them away for their (legal) period and reckon the period, and keep your duty to Allah, your Lord. Expel them not from their houses nor let them go forth unless they commit open immorality. Such are the limits (imposed by) Allah; and whoso transgresseth Allah's limits, he verily wrongeth his soul. Thou knowest not it may be that Allah will afterward bring some new thing to pass.
SHAKIR O Prophet! when you divorce women, divorce them for~ their prescribed time, and calculate the number of the days prescribed, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah, your Lord. Do not drive them out of their houses, nor should they themselves go forth, unless they commit an open indecency; and these are the limits of Allah, and whoever goes beyond the limits of Allah, he indeed does injustice to his own soul. You do not know that Allah may after that bring about reunion.

The verse 651 in Quran is stating that woman should not leave their houses when they are being divorced.

Is this the meaning of this statement in the verse?

Or does it mean that women are not to be put out of their home unless they have committed "indency"?

Or does it mean if they leave their homes during divorce they have committed indency?

    Can anyone help?

    Peace,

Marie brought up making a topic of quran only before the forums crashed.

We have the one on hadith topics.

Could we not have one on Quran only topics as well?

Or did this fall through for some reason?

  • Peace from Morningdew
    M morningdew

I am new to this board and have just read a little bit of the many posts. I have been surprised at many of the posts and disbelief in Hadith.

I am Muslim female from USA. I have been a Muslim for over 26 years.

I have studied christianity as well as Islam. I have thought from time to time that hadith is a lot like the Bible. A writing of truth that has been tampered with. One from God one from the people. Maybe I am wrong. It has just been a thought.

When I have been encountered with the question of how can we know the correct way to pray if we do not read Hadith I finally found an answer that I was satisfied with. I say, most Christians who read the Bible and become confused about a law or way of life that God has prescribed to them, just give up and stop following that law. It is easy for Muslims to stop praying the ritual of Islamic Salat with the excuse to Allah that they were not told how to pray. But, Muslims do not do that. The fact that Allah has made this law to pray and not been very clear about how to pray is simply a test for the people to see who will and who will not obey Allah.

Well, that is an introduction to my thoughts as a converted Muslim woman.

Inshallah I will be allowed to post here and get to know a few of your thoughts as well.

  • My thoughts on this subject.
    M morningdew

    Peace.

I was just thinking about all this new found information I am receiving from this site and the thought has occurred to me why most Arab Muslims still find fault with us American muslims even after years of ritual salat and fasting and wearing hajab(for women) and so on.

It is because they are right! We still don't get it! We are still thinking of 5x's salat and missing the true meaning of salat. When we look at salat as meaning committments/obligations then we can easily realize that means our marriages and our children and other commitments.

American Muslims are more easy to leave a marriage then work on fixing it. And if one worked on fixing it that would mean one has honored commitments/obligations. Would it not?

And another thought has also entered my mind. Arab Muslims obviously know that is what salat means. But, for the most part it is hidden from people.

Anyway, these are just thoughts. But, I will keep on till I learn what Quran is really saying to us.
