The children died in Halmy?s arms ?I have nothing left to live for?
He is squatting. Halmy al-Samounis features are twisted out of shape.
Before him on the floor lies his son Mohammed.
Five months in the closed off Gaza was all the life he was granted. Then came the war.
Halmy al-Samouni is crushed.
Just over a year ago he got married and five months ago little Mohammed was born.
Now Mohammed is lying there before him on the morgue floor of the Shifa hospital in Gaza.
Bloody.
Dead.
Halmy al-Samouni?s relatives must hold him. He is beside himself.
? I felt like I was in hell. As though I had lost a part of myself, Halmy says to Aftonbladet.
Beside his little prince lie the cousins Motasen, nine months old and Ahmed, 4 years old.
They were not carried here by their fathers, Mohammed and Ateh Samouni, since they had died a few hours earlier in the family house at Zeitoun, Eastern Gaza.
Three rockets were fired
The Samouni family knew they were in danger.
The poor area of Zeitoun was considered a Hamas stronghold.
The farmer family has been growing onions and tomatoes mint and eggplants there for decades
Sometimes the children were seen playing with old bicycle wheels and in a tree there was a homemade swing.
As the IDF took the area on the night of Sunday January 4th the family had been calling the Red Cross for two days asking for their help to evacuate them.
? ?Israeli soldiers told my brothers and my cousins to leave their homes and go to our place. Staying there would be too perilous they said? Maged al-Samouni tells us over the phone from Gaza City.
81 members of the Samouni family gathered in Maged?s brother?s house.
Around 6,30 am. The next morning the whole building shook.
Not from one Israeli missile.
But from three.
? The first rocket injured many. The other missile killed many and with the third the whole house caved in over us says Maged al-Samouni.
Lost six of his children
Maged lost four sons and two daughters.
His cousin was left with one of his nine children.
Halmy, Maged and other survivors scooped up the injured and dying children and ran.
At a major through fare, crossing Gaza City, they were picked up by a motorist and taken to the Shifa hospital.
? One of the boys had been hit between his legs. We brought him to the hospital but he died says Maged.
Then he ran back to his pregnant wife who had got into premature labor from the shock.
Ambulanses tried twice to pick up more injured people from the Samouni house, but they were fired upon and were forced to turn back.
Several days later Ahmed Samouni, age 16 recounts from his sick bed to al-Jazeera
? We were bleeding for days. We were so hungry. I remember giving my brother Isaac a tomato to eat before he died.
?Three other brothers and my mother died too?, he told them.
Israel sealed off the area
Israel quickly sealed off the area to journalists.
But the statements of the Samounis have been confirmed by several eye witnesses.
Mohammed Shasheen, a Red Cross employee, came there with the first ambulances
? ?Inside the Samouni home I saw approximately ten corpses and, on the outside, some other sixty, he tells The Telegraph.?
They brought fifteen wounded with them, but they were forced to leave eight others behind.
? ?We did not have time to linger as the Israeli soldiers opened fire on us?, says Mohammed Shasheen.
Eleven children and seventeen adults were killed in the attack. Two people are still missing.
Sharp criticism from the UN
UN-employees of Unrwa have requested permission to inspect the remains of the Samouni home. So far Israel has refused to grant it and deny any knowledge of the incident .
Navanethem Pillay, UN?s High Commissioner for Human Rights has directed sharp criticism at Israel following the massacre.
?Incidents like these need to be investigated seeing that there are elements that suggest war crimes, she is reported to have said to New York Times.
After four days suspended under the rubble nine year old Amal Atteia Samouni could be rescued and receive care at the Shifa hospital the Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert tells us.
?They meant everything to me?
The three little boys Ahmed and Motasen and little Mohammed were not so lucky.
They were hastily buried together in the grave of an old aunt.
The picture of Halmy al-Samouni has been cabled out across the world.
He is kneeling in the Shifa Hospital Morgue. His face is haggard.
There they lay on a blanket on the cold floor. The children. Who died in the war.
In a few short moments he lost both his wife and his sons.
? ?They were my all. Now that they are dead I?m all alone. I feel I have nothing to live for now?, Halmy al-Samouni says.
