peace loli, Lane does not give specific "commitment" but it is implied. It is also implied from al quran, 7531-32. I do know it occurs in other lexicons (brother mh has it in a Slavic lexicon, it may occur in others too). to me "salawat" = "prayers/duaA for forgiveness" also fits nicely in the verse. What do you think? Its ok, but not as good as the literal understanding. But have you consider 3159? 3159 changes nothing. The God is the one giving/sending slw in 2157, this is not the case in this verse. Wakas

salat Both ends of the day mean The dawn When you are confident of having the Light to achieve something, it is due to His Grant of Wisdom. Praise Him for that in rememberance(salat). Never become proud of your knowledge (salat). Never say this 039049 But when We bestow a favour upon him as from Ourselves, he says, "This has been given to me because of my certain knowledge!" Nay, but this is but a trial, but most of them understand not! The dusk When you lose your confidence and get into darkness, Be a Believer! Praise HIM as if HE had given you everything you are in need of. Never despair; for mumins despair not. read this 002198 Remember Him as He has Guided you, though before that you were certainly of those astray. 002239 Remember Allah, as He has taught you what you did not know. drfazl

Peace drfazl , I agree with you and the verse 737 brings an additional information The time of the night is more effective and better for study. For you have many duties during the day. At dawn, dusk and during the night are good for study because we have several occupations during the day. Marie

peace dutchman, I assume you mean it would be easy to tell when "wusta" (which you associate with noon) occurs by using a stick in the ground, because it would be when there is no shadow. I'm not sure if thats true, but lets say it is, where is the time-range? The end-point? Wakas Peace Wakas, Please combine what I meant with noon (wusstaa) with http//www.free-minds.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1531&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=50 3 periods for salat 2 halves(tarafeyn) of daylight? 1 evening/night(dark) Could it maybe meant so???? Because we get so much time (? 8 ours) for each salat, so we don't have to "gkaza" it, what possible is for fasten...??? Noon is than the border between the first 2 salats; "..watch out for wussta(border).." ) Salaam, Dutchman

Peace be upon you, I do not agree with making the implication that actual translation, I would leave rock as rock because it is meant to be an allegory. The only change I would make to the original is change "strike" to "seperate". Seperate the rock with your staff. The staff is your philosophy of life that supports you. Seperate the rock (those hard of heart) with your philosophy of life (which was made active for you by the God).

Salaams Br. You stated 1.Salat is for God's remembrance (Quran 2014). 2.Salat protects us from evil & vice (Quran 2945). 3.Salat for the believers is conducted regularly at three times each day (Quran 4103, 2458, 2238, 1778, 11114). 6.Salat requires cleanliness (Quran 56). 7.Salat is done while facing one unifying point (Quran 2144). 8.Salat is done in a stationary standing position (Quran 2238-239). 9.Salat involves reciting the Quran until the time period passes (Quran 2745). 11.Salat is ended by prostrating and saying specific words . For your kind attention 1.How can remembrance stop me ,or you doing evil,Admonishing/good advice.Certainly can whereby the salaat can be a tool for adminishing people or givng(or discussing) good advice to them. 3.It was conducted regularly at three times during the liftime of the prophet - why cant it be more or less according to needs and or circumstances? 6.Requires cleanliness- doesn't this mean it is a group thingy. 7.I think to focus on all that is good, and hasten towards it-like Aymans views. If you have a physical building as your kibla ,you will allways be facing some other kibla as well as it will be in the way depending ofcourse where you are in the world. 8.Ayat 238 and 239 go together and allah is telling the prophet according to the war situation at that time? 9.Sorry you missquated the ayat i think.where does it say one needs to recite the quran in the salah?Rather Allah has said to read the quran at various other times. 11.Now you are saying the sujude means prostrating,so performing the sujude whilst falling on the chins is sujude?I think i actually know what that means, its simply Nodding your head,to indicate you agree on a matter, and you are falling on your chin . I hope i havn't taken too much of your time. Thank you.

Peace be upon you SHM, is you recogine the the koran is mathematical struture, why do you deny the 19 sign. forget the word 'miralce'. Why do you deny the mathematical 'sign' of the koran mention in the koran itself? Where does it say mathematical sign? The verse where you are being taught to get this from indicates "thier number" as being a trial for the disbelievers, and by witnessing that trial, the faithful gain more faith. it is simple. because 'worship' implies more than 'service'. look carefully serve 1. transitive and intransitive verb work for somebody to work, or work for somebody the armed force 'work' for the goverment and the nation. The police force 'work' for the civilians of the nation. They dont 'worship' their authority or the civilians, they simply work for them. GOD wants us to do more the 'work' for him, but to 'worship' him. Worshiping GOD means more than service, it implies rememberance, idolizing, gratitude etc. Because the term 'worship' posses these elements, the term 'worship' is a better translation in the context of the entire koran. 'service' is a part of worship. That is why i say it is interchange in religious context, to worship is to 'serve' as well as other elements. To remember the God, to be grateful, ect IS to work for Him. You cannot find a single verse that shows any more than that. Once you realize that "The God" is not a person, then you realize that you are told the God is one to show you the WHOLE picture. We are all parts of a whole, we serve the whole. We do not "worship" it. We hold it in AWE, but we do not worship it. The rest of your statements ended with "I don't care how you interpret it, to each his own". So I wont bother to repsond. Peace.

Peace be upon you, Good topic. I believe it refers even to charity. It is foolish to give away enormous sums of money and end up being one in need. That would be reversing the situation if everyone did that. The poor would be rich and the rich would be poor, so we would have the same imbalance. The God is tryin to keep us balanced. So we give the "excess" of what we have after our needs are taken care of.

Salaams SHM, i used pray ritually-probably for about 20 years untill Allah opened my eyes through layth here,no i am afraid i don't follow ritual salaat like you -i follow or rather do something similer to nabi and other people studeying or discussing and thereby learning - and which does lead to its application as well. Salaams. oh...thats too bad. because surely salat is not a "debate" or a "study" assembly like nabi and layth are promoting with PM. peace

peace all, I ran this article through chat gpt and asked it what word describes it best https//mypercept.co.uk/articles/quran_on_salat.htm Response Finding a single English word that fully encapsulates all the nuanced meanings, contexts, and applications of salat in the Qur'an—as you've laid out comprehensively—is not possible with perfect fidelity. However, we can explore some approximate options, and then I’ll propose the most suitable single term along with its limitations. What Salat Encompasses in the Qur'an (as per your references) Timely, structured practice tied to specific parts of the day. Spiritual devotion humility, remembrance, seeking help from God. Moral-ethical function deters vice, promotes good. Social/public dimension can be communal, visible, or misused for show. Mental and physical state requires clarity, cleanliness, presence. Scriptural connection linked with God’s guidance and the Book. Flexible & practical shortened when traveling or in fear. Can be interpersonal or intercessory made for or with others. Form of communication even birds and angels "do" it. More than ritual includes intention, awareness, and righteous context. Words that Fall Short "Prayer" – Common but too vague or Christianized; lacks the full practical, social, and legal dimensions. "Worship" – Too broad and abstract; doesn’t imply timing, structure, or communal/legal aspects. "Meditation" – Suggests inward reflection but lacks external or scriptural connection. "Ritual" – Too mechanical and lacks the spiritual/moral emphasis. "Devotion" – Strong spiritually, but lacks structure, communal context, and legal nuance. Closest Single-Word Candidate "Communion" Why Spiritual + Communicative implies connecting to the Divine, which fits the Qur’anic salat’s purpose (e.g., remembrance, seeking help). Dual-layered can occur privately (personal) or communally (with others). Respectful & serious has a sacred tone, which reflects the Qur’anic attitude toward salat. Flexible can metaphorically allow for timing, humility, moral function, etc. Limitations In English, communion is often associated with Christian sacraments. Doesn’t directly imply structure, timing, or law—unless heavily redefined. Alternative (but Compound or Borrowed Terms) If allowed a phrase instead of one word “Scriptural Devotion” “Timely Worship” “Ritual Communion” “Conscious Devotion” “Divine Connection” Summary English Word Captures Misses Communion Spiritual connection, sacred intent, private/public duality Timing, ritual precision Prayer Common reference, some scriptural overlap Legal, structured, and moral aspects Worship God-centered focus Specificity, timing, communal/ritual dynamic Devotion Sincerity, inner state Structure, outward performance Ritual Structure, repetition Sincerity, moral depth I asked it what about liturgy? Response Excellent suggestion. The word "liturgy" is actually one of the strongest contenders if you're looking for a single English word that comes closer to encompassing the full Qur'anic concept of salat, more so than "prayer" or "ritual." Why “Liturgy” Works Well 1. Structured and Timed A liturgy is a prescribed, repeatable, structured act of worship, often tied to specific times—this aligns with Qur'anic salat being a timed, decreed practice (e.g., 4103, 11114). 2. Collective and Individual Liturgy can be public (congregational) or private, just like salat in various contexts (e.g., 4102 vs. 20132). 3. Scripturally Anchored Liturgy is typically based on a sacred text or tradition, which fits the Quranic link between salat and scripture (e.g., 3333–34, 2945). 4. Devotional and Moral A liturgy isn't just form; it ideally conveys deep meaning, remembrance, humility, and moral alignment—similar to salat's function of remembering God and deterring evil (2014, 2945, 232). 5. Can Be Performed Mechanically or Sincerely Just like the Qur’an warns against hypocritical salat (e.g., 1075–6), a liturgy can be done formally without spirit, or sincerely with intent. ️ Limitations of "Liturgy" (if used alone) In English, it's most commonly associated with Christian or Jewish traditions, so it may carry foreign connotations to readers unfamiliar with Islamic concepts. It doesn’t naturally imply the personal connection or supplication aspect unless contextualized. Verdict “Liturgy” is arguably the closest existing single English word to represent salat as described in the Qur’an, especially when understood as A structured, scripturally-based act of devotion performed at prescribed times, individually or communally, with the purpose of remembering God, cultivating humility, and aligning with divine guidance. Suggested Use You could say “In the Qur’an, salat is best understood as a form of divine liturgy—timed, communal or individual, morally conscious, and rooted in God’s revelation.” If needed, you can clarify in a footnote or early definition that you’re expanding the term “liturgy” beyond its Christian context. Would you like help drafting a formal definition or paragraph for "salat as liturgy" for an academic or public-facing audience? I said yes. Response Great. Here's a formal definition and explanatory paragraph that presents salat as “liturgy” in a way suitable for academic, interfaith, or public-facing contexts. You can adjust the tone depending on your audience Formal Definition Salat (Arabic صلاة) In the Qur’anic context, salat refers to a divinely prescribed form of devotional liturgy that is to be upheld at specific times of day. It encompasses both individual and communal expressions of structured worship, rooted in remembrance of God (dhikr), humility, ethical conduct, and alignment with divine guidance. As a timed, embodied, and scripturally anchored practice, salat functions not merely as prayer, but as a form of ritualized submission, moral reinforcement, and covenantal engagement with the sacred. Expanded Explanatory Paragraph In the Qur’an, salat is far more than personal prayer or general worship—it represents a structured spiritual discipline, akin to what might be called liturgy in broader religious studies. It is tied to specific times (e.g., dawn and twilight), and carries physical, mental, and ethical dimensions. Salat is to be performed with mental clarity, ritual purity, and conscious humility, often in communal settings, though it remains valid when done privately or even in challenging circumstances like travel or fear. It is described as a booked or decreed obligation (Q. 4103), one that serves to connect the individual with God, anchor moral behavior, and foster a sense of responsibility and covenant with the divine. While salat can be outwardly performed, its spiritual efficacy is tied to inner sincerity, intention, and remembrance—those who perform it to be seen by others are criticized (Q. 1075–6). As such, the Qur’anic conception of salat shares significant parallels with liturgical practice, while also preserving its unique theological and ethical framework. Optional Note for Clarity (especially in interfaith or comparative contexts) While the term “liturgy” is most commonly associated with Christian or Jewish rites, it is used here in a broader religious studies sense to refer to structured, communal or individual ritual acts that express devotion and embody religious values. I asked which better suits communion or liturgy? Response Between "communion" and "liturgy," the better fit for representing salat as described in the Qur’an is liturgy, especially in serious or academic contexts. Why "Liturgy" Is Better Suited Than "Communion" Criteria Liturgy Communion Structure & Timings Explicitly denotes a prescribed, ritualized, time-bound act—matching salat’s formal nature. Usually refers to spiritual union, not structured or time-specific. Scriptural Basis Typically rooted in textual tradition—mirrors salat’s connection to the Qur’an. Focuses more on mystical or relational aspects, not necessarily scriptural. Public/Communal Practice Can be public, communal, or individual, like salat. Can include others, but less clearly denotes public performance. Embodied Practice Implies bodily, ritual actions (standing, bowing, etc.), like in salat. Usually refers to internal/spiritual experience, not physical expression. Moral/Ethical Function Often tied to moral, covenantal obligations. May imply spiritual closeness, but not necessarily ethical discipline. Common Usage Match Closer match when describing formal religious duties. In English, “communion” is more abstract, mystical, or sacramental. Summary Use liturgy if you want to emphasize salat's structure, timing, scripture-based ritual, and ethical-spiritual framework. Use communion if you're emphasizing a relational/spiritual connection with God, but it misses the ritual precision and communal/legal aspects. Verdict LITURGY is the better term to represent salat in English, especially when aiming for clarity, theological precision, and respect for its formal, Qur’anic characteristics. If you're ever concerned about the Christian connotation of "liturgy," just define it upfront for your context—most academic or interfaith readers will accept it when clearly framed. Would you like a one-sentence definition using “liturgy” that you can use in various contexts (e.g., essays, talks)? I said yes. Response Salat in the Qur’an is best understood as a form of Islamic liturgy—a structured, time-bound devotional practice rooted in scripture, intended to cultivate remembrance of God, moral discipline, and spiritual presence. End. Not saying I agree with everything in the above but found it interesting.

Peace As many of you already know, I am struggling to keep a roof over my head. I am about to become homeless as I already went to the court hearing over rent arrears. Before you judge me just know that I did what I could to try and prevent it but it happened anyway. Common stereotypes of homeless people- they drink, they do drugs, they're lazy- I do not fit these stereotypes. I've never drank alcohol in my lifetime, I don't do drugs and I've continuously job searched and been ignored by most job applications or rejected after having job interviews. My family let me down because our rent was high and they expected me to pay the rent for the whole household on my own. As you can see, it has been a sad and unfair situation. I've reached out to my council and I am still trying to get help like temporary accommodation from them but it's hard or almost impossible to get a council house when you're in rent arrears especially if you're not a British citizen so I don't know what will happen. I feel scared especially since I'm a woman and it's winter... Someone suggested I try to get help from a Sunni mosque or charity since they have the biggest charities amongst Muslims. My question is, would it be wrong for a Qur'an alone Muslim to seek help be it accommodation or zakaat charity from a Sunni mosque?

I recently listened to this lecture by Hassan Farhan AlMalki. He describes in it several hadiths where sahabah had forgotten how the Prophet prayed. In one hadith, Ali ibn Abi Talib visits Kufa and leads the community in prayer. And one of the sahabah (I believe it was Abu l-Darda' al-Ansari) who then comments to the hadith narrator that Ali's prayer reminded him of the prayer of Mohammad, because he did the takbeer whenever he prostrated or rose. In another hadith, this time from Abu Hurayrah, he mentions that saying the takbeer while prostrating or rising is "the Hashemite way of prayer". Al-Maliki is very shocked by these hadiths, and wonders how it is possible for important sa7abah to forget how the prophet prayed. Instead, I believe this shows that the earliest Muslims viewed prayer more loosely than modern Muslims. That there was no fixed formula, as long as it contained certain elements such as standing and prostrating.

Peace FM translation 3356 God and His angels give allegiance to the prophet. O you who believe, you shall give allegiance to him, and comply completely. Web site http//www.quran4peace.org/en_index.html What is “salat”? As we saw in the previous chapter, the common noun “islam” is not the meaningless proper name of a religion. It is an action and life direction of peacemaking that one must take. It is not some rituals that people can perform while not supporting peace and instead supporting corruption and bloodshed. Unfortunately, by turning “islam” into a meaningless proper name, the majority of people became incapable of distinguishing between the simplest of meanings. For example, while “islam” means peacemaking, the word “taslim” means submission. Many people utter the words “sala allah alayh wa sallam” every time the prophet is mentioned because they believe that this is what the god told them to do in 3356. Here are some of the most widely used English translations of 3356 033.056 YUSUFALI Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect (salimu taslima). PICKTHAL Lo! Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Prophet. O ye who believe! Ask blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation (salimu taslima). SHAKIR Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who believe! call for (Divine) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation (salimu taslima). As we can see, the word “taslim” in 3356 is translated as salutation. However, by doing a simple search in the Quran, everyone can easily find the same exact word used in 465 to clearly mean “submission” not “salutation”. 004.065 YUSUFALI But no, by the Lord, they can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance against Thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction (yosalimu taslima). PICKTHAL But nay, by thy Lord, they will not believe (in truth) until they make thee judge of what is in dispute between them and find within themselves no dislike of that which thou decidest, and submit with full submission (yosalimu taslima). SHAKIR But no! by your Lord! they do not believe (in reality) until they make you a judge of that which has become a matter of disagreement among them, and then do not find any straitness in their hearts as to what you have decided and submit with entire submission (yosalimu taslima)The search will also find the same exact word “taslim” in Chapter 33 itself just a few pages earlier in 3322 YUSUFALI When the Believers saw the Confederate forces, they said "This is what Allah and his Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger told us what was true." And it only added to their faith and their zeal in obedience(taslima). PICKTHAL And when the true believers saw the clans, they said This is that which Allah and His messenger promised us. Allah and His messenger are true. It did but confirm them in their faith and resignation (taslima). SHAKIR And when the believers saw the allies, they said This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth; and it only increased them in faith and submission (taslima). It is obvious that the word “taslim” in the Quran is used to mean “submission” and not “salutation”. In fact, the same complete formula “submit with full submission” used in 465 is the one used in 3356. This is why 3356 accurately doesn’t say that the god and the controllers “submit with full submission/yusalimu taslima” and this clause only applies to “O you who believe”. This is due to the obvious fact that the one and only god doesn’t submit to anyone. So, according to 3356, when people say “sala allah alayh wa salam” they are ignorantly saying that the god submits (the god be most exalted). So billions of people, including so-called scholars, have been mindlessly uttering what is essentially a gross blasphemy against the god! What the believers were told in 3356 is to do the same thing that the god did and in addition submit completely. The god certainly didn’t go around repeating “salla allah alayh” whenever the prophet’s name was mentioned. Similarly, the prophet didn’t understand the same command in 9103 to mean going around parroting “salla allah alayh” whenever the name of any of those who repented was mentioned. In fact, all the translators of 9103 agreed and thought that it would be ridiculous for the prophet to go around parroting “salla allah alayh” every time someone’s name is mentioned. So they translated the order “salli alayhim” as “pray for them” or “pray on their behalf”. 009.103 YUSUFALI Of their goods, take alms, that so thou mightest purify and sanctify them; and pray on their behalf. Verily thy prayers are a source of security for them And Allah is One Who heareth and knoweth. PICKTHAL Take alms of their wealth, wherewith thou mayst purify them and mayst make them grow, and pray for them. Lo! thy prayer is an assuagement for them. Allah is Hearer, Knower. SHAKIR Take alms out of their property, you would cleanse them and purify them thereby, and pray for them; surely your prayer is a relief to them; and Allah is Hearing, Knowing. Of course when it came to 3356, the translators faced a dilemma since they quickly realized that it would be absurd for the god to “pray for the prophet” or “pray on his behalf”. So they translated the same exact command in 9103 as “send blessings on the prophet” or “ask/call for blessings on the prophet” instead of “pray for the prophet” or “pray on his behalf”. 033.056 YUSUFALI Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect. PICKTHAL Lo! Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Prophet. O ye who believe! Ask blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation. SHAKIR Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who believe! call for (Divine) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation. The translators were forced to be inconsistent due to their lack of understanding of the term “salat”. Not only have they created logical inconsistencies between 3356 and 9103 but they have also created internal inconsistencies in 3356. For example, Pickthal and Shakir realized that Yusufali made a huge blunder when he said “send your blessings on him” since humans do not inherently have “blessings” that they can distribute and can only ask the god for his blessing. So Pickthal and Shakir translated the command as “ask/call for blessings on him”. However, by doing so, they created another inconsistency since the action the believers are commanded to do is literally the same exact action the god does. Certainly, the god doesn’t “ask/call for blessings”. The translators provided the key to understanding the concept of “salat” from the Quran a few passages earlier in 3343. The key is not in their translation of the action of “salat” but is in the effect of this action The rest of the article to read from the link above

Peace, Below a compilation of verses that corroborate the inclination and physical prostration 7206 Those who are at your Lord, they are never too proud to serve Him, and they glorify Him, and to Him they yield. 343 "O Mary, be dutiful to your Lord and prostrate and kneel with those who kneel." 4829 Mohammed is the messenger of God, and those with him are severe against the rejecters, merciful between themselves. You see them kneeling and prostrating, seeking the blessings and approval of God. Their distinction is in their faces, as a result of prostrating. Such is their example in the Torah. And their example in the Gospel is like a plant which shoots out and becomes strong and thick and it stands straight on its trunk, pleasing to the farmers. That He may enrage the rejecters with them. God promises those among them who believe and do good works forgiveness and a great reward. 2724 "And I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of God!
