I solved the problem when the "Ramadan" fasting has to be done. The Quran refers to the night of power as the first revelation of the Quran, and to fast a few days, two to three days, no intercourse, or eat or drink. The first revelation was August 10th of 610? Whatever the stand of the moon was from there, a few days. If the new moon isn't visible (the crescent) then fasting is not necessary and feeding the poor is necessary. Example places with eternal sun. Also, 2x12 (months)=24, 3x12=36, Muhammad may have chosen to fast these days and put them into a full month instead because it would be easier to follow. There is no harm to do the 24 to 36 day fast all together if you want to, but for autophagy and glycogen store depletion, this few day fast every month is the healthiest for the human body, as well.

People go on and on trying to find the exact way of "fasting in Ramadan" or "fasting in the ramadan full moon" and so on. Layth's winter solstice theory came from no solid evidence at all and I think he jumped the gun in his article going from the history of Mary to night of decree to Ramadan and so on. Some have brought forth interesting ideas about fasting after the full moon following the summer solstice or after the one following the autumn equinox. These two theories seemed intersting and a plausible alternative to ?the arbitrary calendar of traditional Islam. However, just from the verses dealing with fasting, there is not a very certain way to tell. Moreover, it does not say "fast in/during shahr ramadan." Rather, it says "whosoever witnesses the shahr shall fast it/in it. Which shahr? Any shahr. Correct me if I'm wrong but "al" can be used to signify "any" for singular nouns, right? It is certainly true for plural nouns that "al xyz" can mean "all xyz." In either case it does not say "fast in/during shahr ramadan." The point where people overcomplicate the most is in trying to figure out how many days to fast. They try to cross-reference other verses go on far-fetched conclusions. They claim "ayyaman maadoodatin" means a few days i.e. 10 days or 3-10 days. Some say it means "fixed days" by which they mean all of the month they call Ramadan. First of all, I checked the dictionary and it does not signify "a few" - it simply means days numbered, days counted, certain count/amount of days, etc. Secondsly, do you not realize that God was very specific about how many days to fast for not providing food during hajj or killing a believer unintentionally? Why would God not mention how many days He wants believers to fast if he wanted us to fast 10 days, for instance? Why does it says "ayyaman maadoodatin" instead of the number that most claim it is? What good does it do to have only one month to feed the poor for missing a fast? It is even better for the poor to have it every month - they would get more food beyong the regular charity that believers are asked to give on the day of harvest. Does God give a percentage for that? No, because it is left for us to decide. That way, whoever does more, can benefit more from it and whoever does less, benefits less. The same goes for fasting. The overarching charateristic is that people want conformity and they want specifics. If God wants to give specifics, he does, and in general we are given guidelines within which we are to decide what is best. There are no specifics given, which is why people feel the need to really reach for conclusions because it just isn't in the verses that deal with fasting. Guidelines are given for sexually approaching women, what to do if you are traveling, etc. So why would God not just says "fast 10 days after this or that month which can be found looking at this or that?" It is also interesting that God says to fast and says "ayyaman maadoodatin" before mentioning "shahr ramadan." Furthermore, I think using "shahr ramadan" as the first month of the restriction period is arbitrary. Did God say that it is so? No. There are no specifics/no information given concerning that. So we shouldn't force conclusions and make things up that aren't there. Using this flexible approach it gives ease and benefits to all the poor, those living in areas in which the sun does not set during certain or all times, for those who find it hard to fast 30 days at a time, or find hard to fasting 10 days at a time or simply fasting summer days.

After some discussion about the night of decree i came to the conclusion that the night of decree never could be on the 21 or 22 December. However, although the pagans accept the day/date to be first in the old world, the Moon is showing the opposite. The phases of the moon seem to happen first in the new world and then in the old world. The problem lies in the fact that the hypocrites have adopted the pagan Gregorian calendar, and they congregate on Friday, which they say is equivalent to 6th day of the week of Islamic calendar; Yawm al-jumu`ah(day of congregation) as ordained by God in the Quran. However, let?s analyze it. A Islamic calendar I got says that in month ?6? Jumady al-thanyah 1437 (29 day long) Yawm al-jumuah falls on the 29 phase of the moon(not visible, the pagans call new moon). Therefore, al-jumuah is the day after the 29 phase of moon. For Europe the new moon is predicted for Friday April-8-2016; but, this means the night after April 8. Then, this means that the day of congregation is not equivalent to Friday April 8, but to Saturday April 9, for Europe. However, this will make the day of congregation equivalent to Friday on the other side of the world, where new moon is predicted for Thursday April 7, and then the day of congregation is equivalent to Friday April 8, for USA. Now, let?s say that the calendar is wrong and the month ?6? Jumady al-thanyah 1437 is 30 day long. Then, the day after the last phase of moon is Yawm al-sabt(day of rest), which would make Friday and al-jumuah equivalent, for Europe. However, this changes everything on the other side of the World, and would make al-jumuah equivalent to Thursday, for the Americas. Yawm al-jumu`ah should be translated and spoken by Muslims as day of congregation, or 6th day, rather than using the name Friday, or Thursday, that honors a pagan god; And the same for the other days of the week as well. After analyzing a whole year of data recorded by the LRO(lunar reconnaissance orbiter of NASA), I came to the conclusion that making a calendar for an specific part of the world is near impossible. Making a precise calendar is a difficult task, and perhaps is even wrong since we are predicting the future, for prognostication is forbidden in the Torah. Perhaps the point behind all this is that we should be looking at the God created heaven, instead of looking to a man created paper on the wall. It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases ? that you may know the number of years and account ? Maybe we should only be counting what has passed, and not what will pass. The Islamic calendars I got do not coincide with the moon phases. Is anybody here from the Middle East that can observe the moon, and then tell me what day was the next morning there, so that at least I can correct the day of the week I am in, on the other side of the world? May God increase our knowledge and give us wisdom.

The irregularity of Gregorian calendar can be observed with a simple look at the starting dates of the month. Everyone knows that Monday is the first day of the week. The question is, why months do not begin with Monday? Just check the months of 2014 for example January begins with Tuesday. February, with Friday. March, Friday also. April, Monday. May, Wednesday. June begins with Saturday. July, Monday. August, Thursday. September, Sunday. October, Tuesday. November, Friday, and December, Sunday again. So from all 12 months, only two begin with the ?first? day of the week. This fact alone concludes the irregularity of actual calendar. And the weeks constantly get split between months. This is in reference to older posts on this subject which unfortunately this was not mentioned. I think a good many of you who are proposing a fixed winter Ramadan or a fixed summer Ramadan are not taking into account in your theories that life exists south of the equator... where as the northern hemisphere's winter solstice, being the shortest day of the year is also the southern hemisphere's summer solstice, being the longest day of the year therefor the logic is reversed on most points made about that. So point being that whether you are a proponent of the winter solstice being the fixed night of decree or Ramadan or whether the summer time being the fixed time of Ramadan then the reverse is true based on your logic which makes it illogical.

Hello all, I already stated in my first post to have stopped reading about Salaat and Sawm for a long time as I was quite confused about the different interpretations of these concepts. All of them very appealing but impossible to unite. I hope you guys can give me a small update or link to your current understanding of the concept of Sawm.

Peace, Not sure how many realize that there is something interesting within Sunni traditions regarding the congregational Tarawih prayer during Ramadan. All hadiths were taken from http//www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/bukhari/ In Sunni community, whether it was 23 or 11 raka'ats, the congregational Tarawih prayers will be performed in local mosques. Some do pray alone at home because most would pray these prayers in congregational. What interesting is this Volume 3, Book 32, Number 227 Narrated Abu Huraira Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever prayed at night the whole month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven." Ibn Shihab (a sub-narrator) said, "Allah's Apostle died and the people continued observing that (i.e. Nawafil offered individually, not in congregation), and it remained as it was during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr and in the early days of 'Umar's Caliphate." 'Abdur Rahman bin 'Abdul Qari said, "I went out in the company of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab one night in Ramadan to the mosque and found the people praying in different groups. A man praying alone or a man praying with a little group behind him. So, 'Umar said, 'In my opinion I would better collect these (people) under the leadership of one Qari (Reciter) (i.e. let them pray in congregation!)'. So, he made up his mind to congregate them behind Ubai bin Ka'b. Then on another night I went again in his company and the people were praying behind their reciter. On that, 'Umar remarked, 'What an excellent Bid'a (i.e. innovation in religion) this is; but the prayer which they do not perform, but sleep at its time is better than the one they are offering.' He meant the prayer in the last part of the night. (In those days) people used to pray in the early part of the night." There is one major problem for the Sunnis here. It is admitted in the hadith that Muhammad never offer the Tarawih prayer in congregation. It is also admitted that the idea of congregation Tarawih prayer is 100% Umar's idea and it is a bid'a/innovation. There are two backgrounds on why this should be a problem. The first one is this Volume 8, Book 73, Number 134 Narrated Zaid bin Thabit Allah's Apostle made a small room (with a palm leaf mat). Allah's Apostle came out (of his house) and prayed in it. Some men came and joined him in his prayer. Then again the next night they came for the prayer, but Allah's Apostle delayed and did not come out to them. So they raised their voices and knocked the door with small stones (to draw his attention). He came out to them in a state of anger, saying, "You are still insisting (on your deed, i.e. Tarawih prayer in the mosque) that I thought that this prayer (Tarawih) might become obligatory on you. So you people, offer this prayer at your homes, for the best prayer of a person is the one which he offers at home, except the compulsory (congregational) prayer." Hence, if someone were to ask, "Then how did they offer the Tarawih prayer before Umar's idea came into the picture?" the answer is that they offered the prayers individually and at home. The second one is that by Sunni standards, bid'a (innovation in religion) is forbidden. Such attempts are reprimanded. For example Volume 3, Book 49, Number 861 Narrated Aisha Allah's Apostle said, "If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing is rejected." Muslim, Book 004, Number 0790 Anas reported One day the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was sitting amongst us that he dozed off. He then raised his head smilingly. We said What makes you smile. Messenger of Allah? He said A Sura has just been revealed to me, and then recited In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. Verily We have given thee Kauthar (fount of abundance). Therefore turn to thy Lord for prayer and offer sacrifice, and surely thy enemy is cut off (from the good). Then he (the Holy Prophet) said Do you know what Kauthar is? We said Allah and His Messenger know best. The Holy Prophet (may peace be upon him) said It (Kauthar) is a canal which my Lord, the Exalted and Glorious has promised me, and there is an abundance of good in it. It is a cistern and my people would come to it on the Day of Resurrection, and tumblers there would be equal to the number of stars. A servant would be turned away from (among the people gathered there). Upon this I would say My Lord, he is one of my people, and He (the Lord) would say You do not know that he innovated new things (in Islam) after you. Ibn Hujr made this addition in the hadith" He (the Holy Prophet) was sitting amongst us in the mosque, and He (Allah) said (You don't know) what he innovated after you" Surprisingly, or perhaps not, majority of Sunnis don't even realize this. Salam. I've started fasting on July 01. 2007 and the feeling is beautiful. It was tough and rough the first 2 days but now it feels so good to sink my teeth into food after sunset. Awesome feeling.
