Peace ayman, Zlatan, and all 4826 Those who rejected had put in their hearts the rage of the days of ignorance, then God sent down tranquility upon His messenger and the believers, and directed them to uphold the word of righteousness, and they were well entitled to it and worthy of it. And God is fully aware of all things. I think this verse can shed some light on the word "ahilla", as "ahlaha" means "worthy of it / qualified for it".

Peace be upon you, This greatest hajj is warfare. I too see the logic in lesser and greater "hajj", I am not sure that the greatest hajj is warfare however, it has been my position that the greatest hajj is like the Geneva Convention, a world gathering. The lower hajj would be day to day discussion with mankind. I would think that the physical battle would be the LOWEST hajj, in fact, I would even list that under JIDAL, not HAJJ. Please share any further verses you might have that would correct my thinking.

Peace Tony, Four sacred months are the waiting or restricted period of four months that you observe with Patience for Allah's sake while seeking His Forgiveness for all that your own hands have wrought upon yourself. Allah tests you once or twice in a year to see if you turn towards Him for His Help and Protection. Do not make a move using your knowledge worldly, during the abstention to set things right that you already spoilt. Keep spending your time period of 4 months promisingly in the path of Allah spending from the good that you have, fasting and seeking His Forgiveness and Wisdom, praying for Allah's Guidance. Allah is only with those who keep up patience with good doings. So they are the Victorious! Four months's continuous observance of patience and abstention from using your adverse brains when a calamity or distress from Allah strikes you only to make you turn up to Him for doing good for yourselves and to others and thus making the 4 month's THE SACRED PERIOD. drfazl

Peace be upon you MZ, I am leaning towards abstaining as being not having sex or talking dring the day. I have no proof yet, only conjecture, but while I was reading your understanding above, it made me think about how some people are to abstain 3 days during "hajj". Now for me, hajj is debating. There is also the Great debate, which is for all of mankind to come to. It would make sense that one would abstain from talking and sex, because refraining from sex is thought to give you the needed mental energy, and not talking allows you to LISTEN. What better discipline for a time where the God's Debate is being recited? I am still trying to put it all together though.

Peace Zenje, Peace Zen. Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I started typing the other night and realized I was being reflexive. I had to thin about it more. You're right. The translation leads in the wrong direction. Arrrrrgh! x OK, I'm at peace with the idea that food and drink is prohibited during the fast, from dawn til dusk. But the length is still bothering me. Is it 30 days, 10 days, 3 days? What are your thoughts Zen? Peace, Tay

Salam Marie and thank you, you're analyse of "falsayumhu" seems corrects to me, especially with the other example you gave me. So "fast" or rather "abstain it" is actually the way it should be read, which really refers rather to the month than the counted days - but still, the verse is less clear to me than others dealing with fasting. Now, concerning "ayyam madoudat", I found another occurence in 324 of disbelievers thinking that they wont taste hell except "a few days / the counted days"? Even though the root word refers to counting, here "counted" seems less appropriate as translation. May be we should search more into the use throughout quran of the term counted. Are there other, more appropriate words used to say few ? I'll search on my own, but would very much appreciate help. Things would go much faster as right now I've got to get back to my work which I neglected a little since discovering your site ! Ok, hear from you soon inchallah. Elke

Peace be upon you Someone, Thank you for showing the entire context of 1736, that makes it much more powerful and I am certainly not doing the traditional "sawm" until I can clearly understand what is being asked of me. This is a wise decision ) Peace

Peace Mohammed, all Peace marie, Dell and all I have some observations if I may 1- A pregnant woman is not an ill person, it's not illness. 2- A Woman having her menstruations is not an ill person neither. She should be observing the "fast" anyway. We cannot generalize. We agree neither pregnancy nor the menstruations are a disease and they are natural phenomena but can be accompanied by the annoyances and it involves the pain and vomiting. One can need medicines or to eat. Allah wants to bring us ease and not to bring us hardship. About children, they can observe abstinence if they can support it physically without the annoyances or great difficulty. Marie

At university today, a bunch of people told me that if you touch someone who is not known/related to you (na mehram) other than your father, brother etc. your fast is broken. What truth is there to this? I am pretty sceptical since this is the first time I have ever heard of something like this. Anyone knows if there is any truth to this? No your fast is not broken. But its haram to touch a ghayr-mahram.

Peace upon all, How can someone specify a certain time for people (for example a meeting time)? Although this may sound like an easy question, please keep in mind that those people don't use the same standard calendars and potentially don't know about each other's calendars. In the past, they didn't needed a high accuracy in planning things, Things were going so much slowly in the past, like moving from a place to another, or sending a message or the invitation with limited tools. I think they would fix a period of time for the meetings, such as the changing seasons would be a marker for people to meet at a certain place, for a month or two, giving enough time for people to arrive (max 10-20 miles/h), trips lasted weeks and months, when today it takes one day or least to go around the earth.

What is iftar ? Iftar , based upon its timing, we can come to the following inference the coming of the dusk or the darkness, or, the coming of the night is the iftar, the reward of forgiveness that Allah blesses us with! He knows all that we did during the day and forgives us during the night for all our sins, as He takes our souls so that a restful sleep overtakes us by His Mercy. During the sleep, when we are in His fold we commit not shirk, we do not run after our business to seek our protection in money and matters leaving Allah behind your backs, as we do during the day. As the day approaches from the stillness of night, Allah sends back our souls as purified free from our sins, we wake up afresh though we have fasted the whole night. This is the RIZK of Allah. In 51 22 Allah says And in heaven is your Sustenance, as that which ye are promised. Iftar is the rewarding time and the promise of Allah, the Rizk of Allah reaching all your senses and satisfying all your worldly requirements. If only, you fast during the day, staying free from committing the shirk and staying away from the shirk of seeking protection in your own affairs and business and men and money and things of this world. dr fazlur rahman

peace bro, Firstly, I suggest reading the 'which root is being used?' part in PRL. Its helpful in identifyying the root. fast/abstain - sawm - Sawd-Waw-Miim From Lane & QD Shiin-ha(not Ha in hajj)-Ra to publish abroad, make it notable/known/manifest/public/infamous (in a bad or good sense), hire/contract for a month, stay a month, month old, month, new moon, moon, full moon, any evil thing that exposes its author to disgrace, a vice/fault or the like, big & bulky, reputable/eminent. From most, if not all, occurrences in al quran, it seems to imply the period of a month. Wakas
