The quran lays a great emphasis on good deeds also known as amal salih in arabic. Does amal salih mean praying, giving charity, fasting etc or as I understand, it means doing good actions like helping the blind cross the road, helping the illeterate to read, giving a ride to the child to school who has missed his bus and has missed his exam etc? Please answer me. Thanking you

To get a better idea of what The Quran means by certain words, simply look up every occurrence.

      Utilise http//www.studyquran.org
      Specifically http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

The word Salah means "Correct" and the word Amel means "doing". Thus, the Amel Salih means The Correct Doings (correct Deeds).
        The correct deeds are the ones that are written in God's Book, and the ones that are ot written are not correct deed;
thus, would you say "growing your Beard is a correct deed"? No
would you say "Fasting is a correct deed"? Yes
Praying is a correct deed, Paying Charity is a correct deed, and helping others is a correct deed.

I hope I explained the big picture right.

        Salam

If you study the Quran, you will find many good deeds... especially through the stories in the Quran... I will quote some...

          Be good to parents
          Protect and keep family ties
          Help those in need
          Look after the orphan
          Praying,fasting and Charity
Studying also is a good deed...

And so much more which you will discover as you walk on the straight path...

However, not all deeds will be mentioned in the Quran and this is why Allah gave us intelligence and conciousness... When we do something wrong, our heart talk to us and we immediately know its wrong... and same for good... So follow your heart and you will not be in trouble... It will not allow you to do bad deeds... Except if you force the deed on you...

          Allah knows best..

If you find a nail on the road, or piece of glasses and you pick it up so that others dont get hurt with it or prick their tires in their vehicles... Then this is a good thing/deed...

              Thats my opinion...

I agree with you these are Good things to do; also, I'm sure there are referances to helping and protecting people from getting harm, in Quran or Bible or Torah. I will try to post these verses when I find them (unless someone out there know such verses and can post them).
                Salam peace

                  Salaam,
I am not a native speaker of Arabic. But as far as i know, there is a word in Arabic, which is 'sulh' and means 'peace'. My question is is the word 'saleeh' not a derivative of 'sulh' and consequently, means 'peaceful'. And saleeh amal = peaceful deeds?
Please correct me if i am wrong. Thank you.

                    Salaam,
As I understand it, any acts to protect people on this earth or saving the environment should fall under our duty as God's Khalifa on earth that man has been entrusted with and for which we will be questioned.

Awesome remark. Ssali7(or ssalih if you wish) is one of the a derivatives of the root ssa-la-7a. The source (or al massdar) is the word Ssul7. Ssul7 can mean peace. I don't know the exact match in English. It could be the word 'agreement' maybe? I will try to find out. But basically, from ssul7 one can have peace, and from peace one can have ssul7. But then,, one can be as crazy as to damage a ship by making a hole in it, yet such a wrong doing could have an "issla7ic" intention., something like a long term benefit that is not obvious to the immediate observer. Al 3amal al ssali7 can be the lesser of two evils. Al 3amal al ssali7 may not always be as simple as one would assume. Intention is key in al 3amal al ssali7..... Did I just complicate the matter??

You mentioned very Good example, distroying the boat, which shows that Amal Saleh is the deeds that God ordered us to do, even if it seams not correct.
So, you did not complicate the matter, but added a very valuable point.

                                    Salam Belal,

                                    Peace all,

"As for the ship, it belonged to Mas?k?n (poor people) working in the sea. So I wished to make a defective damage in it, as there was a king behind them who seized every ship by force. (18-79)

You know what? I believe that we should drop the example of that guy who damaged the ship because, truly, what he did can't be applied on ordinary folks like you and me. That man was on a mission, completely protected by God, foreseeing things that were totally hidden even from Musa. What the man did was completely out of the ordinary, damaging ships, killing an innocent child +!!! Such outrageous doings! Who could bear witness to such doing and be able to keep quiet about it!!?? And where were they living anyway? In what era?? On which planet?? It seems that they were in a place that one could do anything and get away with it! Didn't anyone else other than Musa witness what that man did and at least protested? And why didn't Musa report that guy to the authorities, police, etc?? My point is that that example does not apply on any normal society in any given time! It was an exceptional act, performed by an exceptional man in an exceptional community! And so, it should not be included in al3amal alssali7 category. And so, I should not have brought that example up in the first place! There are other examples in the Quran that should not be included in al3amal al ssali7, such as Muhammad's polygamy, Sulaiman's talking to birds!! Would learning birds' language be considered 3amal ssali7!? Would listening to an ant's warnings to her population be considered 3amal ssali7!!?? I can go on and on, you know! I mean to say that not any doing we come across in the Quran, even if it was performed by prophets and sages, or especially if it was performed by prophets and sages, comes under al 3amal alssali7 including your own question here above. So let's drop such examples from our discussion, shall we?

                                    peace

The quran lays a great emphasis on good deeds also known as amal salih in arabic. Does amal salih mean praying, giving charity, fasting etc or as I understand, it means doing good actions like helping the blind cross the road, helping the illeterate to read, giving a ride to the child to school who has missed his bus and has missed his exam etc? Please answer me. Thanking you

All this is "3amal salih", except for "pray", depending on what you mean by it. All 3amal Salih can mean "salat" as in competing and progressing. Something said to be "Salih is not just "good", but good for the job it's made for. 3amal Salih will be a doing with a fruitful outcome that's good for people, creatures and the environment. Rituals in the traditional way are not "3amal salih", that's why I do not believe in them. They might even turn to the opposite, like fasting a whole month and stopping or decreasing work during it and spending too much money on food...etc.
Some interesting derivatives of "Saad Laam Haa"

                                        Salam Belal,

You know what? I believe that we should drop the example of that guy who damaged the ship because, truly, what he did can't be applied on ordinary folks like you and me. That man was on a mission, completely protected by God, foreseeing things that were totally hidden even from Musa. What the man did was completely out of the ordinary, damaging ships, killing an innocent child +!!! Such outrageous doings! Who could bear witness to such doing and be able to keep quiet about it!!?? And where were they living anyway? In what era?? On which planet?? Taj

                                        Peace,
I agree with you that what that man did is not a example for human to follow; that man acted upon clear orders from God; thus his deeds were unique.

Something said to be "Salih is not just "good", but good for the job it's made for. 3amal Salih will be a doing with a fruitful outcome that's good for people, creatures and the environment.

Peace, agree with Samia in the above statement; but I will add that "Amel Salah will be a doing with a fruitful outcome that's good for people, creatures and the environment, And For the person himself.
Thus, I will have to disagree with the following

Rituals in the traditional way are not "3amal salih", that's why I do not believe in them. They might even turn to the opposite, like fasting a whole month and stopping or decreasing work during it and spending too much money on food...etc.

If you want to correct yourself (YuSalah yourself), then Rituals are the way to do. Fasting and Praying are Amel Salah, because it Fix and correct our well-being, as humans. Thus, if you think otherwise, then you are saying that God ordered us to do them for No Reason; therefore, we do not have to do. I see that no different from What Seten did when was ordered to Bow Down to Adam.

From all instances I have studied of it, I would render it as "corrective action"...
