New article: What is the meaning of "al masjid al haram"?
-
Peace
Al Masjid al Haram simply means The Law ...where ever you are turn your faces towards the law.
Salam
Peace Dear fellow Believer,
i don't know whether you are an arab or non arab... but if arab, pls translate the verse 1701 with you above meaning... further would please separate the two words Masjid + Haram and give the meaning first...
Most of What waqas has researched in his articles is mind blowing... but i will never agree for what is Masjid al Haram and the article night and day.. some articles are simply best explanations... but others still can be scrutinized..
God guide him... in a way somehow his articles really inspired me when i was zero in quran... that's why i keep sending to others his articles while there are many sites... -

al Masjid al Haram and al Masjid al Aqsa
? on April 22, 2009, 103612 AM ?
Salamun alaykumHow long have we been seeing this particular topic discussed and debated and still no light at the end of the proverbial tunnel ? There have been so many theories , conjectures and speculations about these supposedly holy places . If the subject matter in question wasn't so serious , I would have found it so funny and even ridiculous .
My own thought in respect of this often controversial topic is .......that as long as we continue to convince ourselves that "al Masjid al Haram and al Masjid al Aqsa" are two physical Mosques , our attempts at grasping the Truth will be futile . Can we let go of all our pre-conceived ideas about Islam and start from what we know about the Qur'an now ? How about starting with Ayman's translation of "al Masjid al Haram" as The Inviolable institution of Obedience or simply The Law ( my preference ) ? After all this al Masjid al Haram was so obvious , that any believers at the time of the messenger would have recognised it as they would their own children . ( Qur'an 2144 ) . As for Al Masjid al Aqsa , or the farthest or is it the highest place of sujud ? I thought that this meaning presents no problem in reaching a clear conclusion as to the real meaning .
We as human being all have to go through a learning process, from basic knowledge of the world around us as well acquiring knowledge of the creator god , and Ahmad / Muhammad no exception to this rule in order to progress to a higher understanding , 937 , 961-5 . The messenger was searching for the Truth even before his appointment as prophet and messenger , and there are many anecdotal and hearsay evidence for this , regardless of the nature of these evidences , the sheer volume of it cannot be ignored . Further clarifying evidence to the need of the messenger to go through the learning process as a normal human can be seen at 18110 and 650 . Only had the messenger undergone all the "Learning Process" as a normal man did he progress to a higher understanding of Truth through the guidance of The God by reading and studying The Qur'an that was revealed to him by The all Knowing as evidenced by 2945 , 2121 and 1736 .
So , my personal understanding of The Journey from Al Masjid al Haram to The Furthest Masjid is that of a Spiritual and intellectual Journey rather than a physical one . From the the basic knowledge and observance of the law to the highest possible human potential e.g. Self Actualization and Self Transcendence as Abraham Maslow would describe it . My view on Hajj is very similar to this view of the two so called Holy Masjid , that is I believe that Hajj is a Pilgrimage within our understanding from the Base to the Ultimate in human enlightenment . And we as believers should try to emulate The Role Models recommended to us by The Merciful God .
Peace and may The God guide us to all truth

PeaceCorrection to the verse 2144 in the second paragraph above should have been 2144-146 .

peace all,
jkhan,
I think that mypercept hadith article is too much to handle for some. If I were you, I'd begin more gently as mentioned previously. You reminded me of this post.*
I never responded to your view on AMAH because it doesn't tell me anything. For example, I specifically wrote my AMAH article in a way so people could test their own view of AMAH (whatever that is) by running it through the issues I discuss. A much better response to my article would be to say what your view is and this is how you resolve the issues of XYZ. Same goes for almarh0m.Simply saying what you think AMAH is tells me/us very little. I want to know how it performs under Quran testing.
TellMeTheTruth,
I cover those verses in the previous parts, its a 3 part article (I even mention this in the article with links!)- http//mypercept.co.uk/articles/meaning-of-SuJuD-from-Quran.html
- http//mypercept.co.uk/articles/meaning-masjid-quran.html
- http//mypercept.co.uk/articles/meaning-masjid-al-haram-Quran.html
quote
*I understand and relate to the gist of what you're saying. The only thing I would add is it is important to appreciate and distinguish between specific beliefs and mindset. For example, I was a Traditional Sunni Muslim, like many here, and whilst I held specific beliefs related to that, my mindset was different in that I was more open, rational, reflective, actively seeking knowledge/truth/verification, trying to improve/grow etc. So, it is possible you will meet a girl and her current views you disagree with but her mindset/thinking may be like yours. In other words, sometimes the direction one is heading in is more important than where they specifically are at this moment in time.

Salam @ Wakas
If you look at the date on my above post, you will see that I wrote that well over 2 years before you wrote your article, so I couldn't have read your article on the same subject then...only copy and paste it for Bro JKhan as he asked me to elaborate on it.

Salam!
Thank you, Wakas!
Sometimes it helps to see things the other way round.
_
020005 The Beneficent One, Who is established on the Throne._
002144 We have seen the turning of thy face to heaven. And now verily We shall make thee turn toward a qiblah which is dear to thee. So turn thy face away the sacred mosque, and ye (O Muslims), wheresoever ye may be, turn your faces away (from) it. Lo! Those who have received the Scripture know that (this revelation) is the Truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do._
002177 It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Scripture and the prophets; and giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and keep his affairs straight/keep up his promises and payeth the poor-due. And those who keep their treaty when they make one, and the patient in tribulation and adversity and time of stress. Such are they who are sincere. Such are the Allah-fearing.You say that Masid Al-Aqsa was not then built at that tiime, then how the People of the Book/previous scripture knew that it was a truth? They certainly faced no mosque at all. Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa could have meant The Highest Place of Respect (i.e., the Arsh of Allah).
_
002189 They ask thee, of new moons, say They are fixed seasons/periods for mankind and for the Hajj. It is not righteousness that ye go to houses by the backs thereof (as do the idolaters during Hajj seasons), but the righteous man is he who fears (Allah?s punishment). So go to houses by the gates thereof, and observe your duty to Allah, that ye may be successful. What is your stance regarding Hajj? And what do you think about Al-Bayt? Since these two terms are used numerously in relation with AMAH, I think you should ponder upon them.
What I understand is that idolators who lived around it, considered AMAH as a sacred place so they did not enter their houses from front doors because they did not like their backs towards it due to respect. Allah has negated their concepts, perhaps.
_
002112 Certainly, whoever submits his will to Allah and is virtuous, he shall have his reward from his Lord, and they will have no fear, nor shall they grieve.
_
002148 To each is a goal to which Allah turns him; then strive together (towards all) that is good. Wheresoever ye are, Allah will bring you Together. For Allah Hath power over all things.
_
003020 So if they dispute with thee, say "I have submitted My whole self to Allah and so have those who follow me." And say to the People of the Book and to those who are unlearned (or not given the book) "Do ye (also) submit yourselves?" If they do, they are in right guidance, but if they turn back, Thy duty is to convey the Message; and in Allah's sight are (all) His servants.
_
004125 Who can be better in religion than one who submits his whole self to Allah, does good, and follows the way of Abraham the true in Faith? For Allah did take Abraham for a friend. Now see this!
_
008050 If thou couldst see, when the angels take the souls of the Unbelievers (at death), (How) they smite their faces and their backs/butts, (saying) "Taste the penalty of the blazing Fire-Why beating their faces and backs/butts? Because they put their face down and their ass is up in the sky when they prostrate?
Do you know there are/were people who prostrate to Sun, Moon or Stars. How can some prostrate to them?
_
041037 Among His Signs are the Night and the Day, and the Sun and the Moon. Do not prostrate to the sun and the moon, but prostrate to Allah, Who created them, if it is Him ye wish to serve.Try to search some google images and see how people prostrate the sun.
Imagine this
_
062005 The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes . Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.048029 Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and paying respect , seeking bounty from Allah and pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of courtesy. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers - so that Allah may enrage by them the disbelievers. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.
Some people may definitely get raged after my this post.

025063 And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily/humbly, and when the ignorant address them, they say peace,May Allah forgive us and guide us all!

Very interesting TBH everyone's opinion and concern... Afterall every individual has his or her view point... That's absolutely fine... But,,, when God delivered the message there could be only one meaning... Suppose for the verse 1701 God would have really meant only one thing with truth... Can our opinion differentiate? No... We can give opinion but truth is one... When God said something with verse 1701 then that's absolute and no other option and we can't change it... So what is the meaning of option less ... That's what we collectively should find out... That's why I didn't even agree to this exemplary knowledgeable person waqas... Coz I see something wrong... When I usually read his articles and compared with Quran doubts not raised and from all angle it seemed perfect.... But while reading this topic (not all what he has written in it) but the meaning given to masjid Al Haram is pretty weird....
Almarhom has given her thoughts... That's also within my early option... But I withdrew from it.... But still Almarhom could be right...
Tellmethetruth also has some valuable comments.... But the point is all have various reasons to say different meaning to a same set of words... As we all know one word can have several meaning but one word cannot have different meaning in one verse at one occasion...
Meaning of masjid in the explanation of waqas is not within my grasp... UNTILL he explains what is the meaning of masjid which appears in the chapter of cave... What did they build...
For me till anyone come up with glaring concrete proof and explanations I will take masjid in entire quran as sanctuary (man made or natural depend on verses)....
If that fits for all occurrences of masjid then for me no issue accepting masjid Al Haram as Restricted sanctuary.... And masjid aqsa the farthest sanctuary..... These are blessed places... 1701 is absolutely musa for me... That's a different topic... But how far this can be truth... But there is only one truth... Let's research it ....
Even I recommend brother waqas once again research... There is always things pop up when put under microscope....
God guide all these beautiful hearts... -

002194 The Sacred month for the sacred month and all sacred things are (under the law of) retaliation; whoever then acts aggressively against you, inflict injury on him according to the injury he has inflicted on you and be careful (of your duty) to Allah and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).See that have two different meanings in one sentence. Lets keep Haram = Haram/prohibited/restricted/forbidden (not sacred) and try to fit it in all ayats. It will fit fine.

Dear thanks for your response...
But I guess you are too quick to answer.... You didn't read properly...
Or you didn't get my English...
That's why i said one word cannot have different meaning in one verse in one occasion... -
Dear JKhan!
Perhaps I gave a wrong example? You said
That's why i said one word cannot have different meaning in one verse in one occasion...
see below

005095 O you who believe! do not kill game while you are on pilgrimage, and whoever among you shall kill it intentionally, the compensation (of it) is the like of what he killed, from the cattle, as two just persons among you shall judge, as an offering to be brought to the Kaaba or the expiation (of it) is the feeding of the poor or the equivalent of it in fasting, that he may taste the unwholesome result of his deed; Allah has pardoned what is gone by; and whoever returns (to it), Allah will inflict retribution on him; and Allah is Mighty, Lord of Retribution. There is one word , which has two different meanings in one verse in one occasion.
Or the translation is not correct? -
peace all,
almarh0m, thanks for clarifying. Feel free to run your understanding through the article etc.
TMTT,
you said, quote "You say that Masid Al-Aqsa was not then built at that tiime, then how the People of the Book/previous scripture knew that it was a truth?"Perhaps you meant AMAH in the above. Please check.
You can read my understanding of "al hajj" and various other things here http//mypercept.co.uk/articles/
e.g.
http//mypercept.co.uk/articles/meaning-hajj-Quran.htmljkhan,
You said, quote "UNTILL he explains what is the meaning of masjid which appears in the chapter of cave... What did they build... "
I already discussed this verse in part 2
http//mypercept.co.uk/articles/meaning-masjid-quran.html -
Salam Wakas!
Thank you for your reply. Whatever Hajj root meaning, the people have to travel during a known period. During this period, hunting of land animals is prohibited and hunting of sea life is allowed. During this period when you are in the vicinity of AMAH, Allah will test people by small or large land animals of prey. In case someone hunts and kills an animal, then there will be a punishment while fighting there can be allowed in case of an attack. It suggests that AMAH is a place and not a time period. What do you say?
You have mentioned visitation of Safa and Marwa and what about visitation of "Bayt Al-Ateeq" (2229)? Why do you think that Al-Bayt Al-Atiq = Al-Ka'aba = Al-Bayt Al-Haram?
What do you think about this below ayat
_
005026 He said So it shall surely be forbidden to them for forty years, they shall wander about in the land, therefore do not grieve for the nation of transgressors.
Did the time of SJD came again after 40 years?Yes, I meant AMAH in my previous comment.
Thank you again!

http//mypercept.co.uk/articles/meaning-masjid-quran.htmlSo brother waqas.. you consider Masjid = Acknowledgement nope / Place of Sujud/(submission) / Mosque....
in my understanding NO.... For me Masjid has only one meaning in quran that's sanctuary(natural and Human erected) ....Does any of the occurrences of masjid not fit as sanctuary in quran?
Masjid al Haram = Inviolable time of acknowledgement.... laugh why ? what is the background reason to conclude inviolable time of acknowledgement? is it only the translation or any concrete evidences to support it?
god guide us -

god guide usSalam
If the meaning of masjid is indeed a sanctuary(physical) as you insisted, then I would have expected Archaeologists in the past would have unearthed several thousands ancient masjid all over the world. The reason being that masjid is a crucial word in Islam and within The Deen...if you care to read 3/19 it made it clear that the only deen acceptable in the sight of Allah is Islam which we can safely assume goes back to the time of the first human group e.g Adam et al. If that is still not sufficient you can always check out 42/13 about the deen of Nuh, Ibrahim and others after them.
So, if a masjid is a physical sanctuary whether natural or man made, we surely would have seen archaelogical evidence from at least some ruins of ancient sanctuary dedicated to Allah by the so called muslims but alas to date there is no such evidence existing anywhere in the world.
My suggestion to you brother is to do your own research using all the resources available online such as Qur'anic Concordance, Arabic Dictionaries and Lexica and do your own thinking to draw your own conclusion while asking for guidance from the author of the Qur'an. Your understanding does not have to be the same as other peoples as you know everyone of us at different level of understanding. I do my own interpretation and translation using the available resources but always asking Allah for his guidance.
Salam

you consider Masjid = Acknowledgement nope / Place of Sujud/(submission) / Mosque..
I'm not sure where you got that from, quote from final article
"Conclusion of parts 1, 2, 3
The Quranic evidence weighs the evidence in favour of SJD meaning "to submit/honour/pay respect", "masjid" meaning "time of SJD", "al masjid al haram" meaning "the inviolable time of SJD" (i.e. the term referring to the time-period/event of the inviolable months)."Note, when you read part 2 it is a work in progress at that point, i.e. no conclusion. It is only until part 3 a conclusion is formed. Just in case that was the confusion.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE...
if we research we would find.. And we can't say there is no such sanctuaries in the subject oriented places.... If natural then such evidences are much less.. Since it is a simple sanctuary though so many things were involved... Hag or Tabonacles of jews is a good example... They took place in sanctuaries that also with loads of restrictions in sanctuaries ... They call. Masjid(sanctuary) as miqdas... Petra is another... Archealogical evidences always emerging...
When it comes to man made it will be only man made structures... Be it small or big.... Ruined buildings are innumerable but who knows what they were...
SUGGESTION AND RESEARCH...
thank dear... That's my total effort just to trace the truth and seek guidance.... I never ever tell that anyone should take my understanding....thats impossible.. My effort is not for everyone to understand me but pass the message to add to their memory.. In case they are some who in line with me, they would ponder... Everyone who research likes to present their research so new doubts and questions arise....so we develop and further get cultivated...
But I am bit different.. I don't like to end up in my research as mere possibilities but the reality I mean the truth of absolute what God meant by the verse/s.... I don't like ambiguity... Since quran is not ambiguous when it gives instructions to do specialy... Till anyone open my mind with their understanding and research of Quran I remain in my personal understanding.... When I found anyone brought the undeniable truth... I surrender and applaud him or her and accept...coz that's what I look for... Till then I keep questioning with my common sense and reasoning... .
I always welcome good researches from people like u.... There is lot to learn... My dear fellow believer... Why we need in certain subjects the absolute truth is coz we can't divide into groups and sects by difference of opinions... For example.. For Salat... We can't keep saying pray two times three five.. No ritual. Prayers salat is this and that... It's absolute blunder... It won't take us anywhere... What is actually God ordered... That's my aim... Even entire world reject... I will do what God guides me with... But not blinded not closing the door for opinions.. But with neutral and much open mindedly... If we confine ourself before getting convinced with truth, then truth won't look truth.... -
Then We revealed to you ´Follow the deen of Ibrahim, a man of pure natural belief (unmixed). He was not one of the idolaters (mixed / political jurisprudence).´ (16123)

@ Wakas!
Sorry for a late reply- What verse are you referring to?
I was referring to 594-97
I have noticed that it has some connection to the Al-Ka'abatu (595, 597) and this Surah 5 mentions in the very first Ayah and in (594-95).
-
I mention why in the article.
You have not mentioned clearly. In 597 the word Masjid is not mentioned. What is the difference between Bayt and Masjid (if Masjid means Time of SJD then how can Bayt and Masjid be interchangeable?) -
I'm not sure. I can't see any obvious connection.
See 521-26
and see 258, 4154, 7161,
I think there is a connection.
Peace!
- What verse are you referring to?

peace,
peace,
Why Qur'an calls kaba/ AMAH as 'ancient house'?(2229) may be an indication that it is the same one used in ancient times for hajj by former prophets (and so is in the future).
Quran doesn't say that in 2229. Although with cross-reference a case can be made it is referring to "al kaabah" / "al bayt al haram", as discussed in the articles.
atiq can mean noble/ancient/liberated/beautiful/generous. I dont think it's possible to conclude its meaning from Quran.
