Maryam is a prophet, Other than that. The Qur'an says thay some are named in the Qur'an and some are not named so there can certainly be females prohets in whichever number.

Hoever, there are some people that say that women cannot be prophets, for them, no matter what the Qur'an says there are no female prophets.

However, for certain people there are no prophets at all either male of females if we gather from the heed they pay to them, particularly from the side of those ho say that there cannot be any female prophets. They manage to beleive that only males can be prophets and at the same time to not take any notice or teaching from them.

So, how is the market for prophets?

      Salaam

            Salam Huruf,

Maybe you taking my question as a challenge. No I didn't mean that. What I wanted is you to explain to me so I may understand why she is a prophet. Because this the first time I heard someone saying she is a prophet.

Anyway my understanding of prophet is a messenger of God given a Scripture. I mean messengers come without scripture and prophets with scriptures.

            This is my understanding.

            God bless

No centi, I did not take your anser as a challenge but I did mean mine as a challenge, not any angry or unkind challenge but, mind it is you not anybody else who says ho is a prophet and who is not. Was Maryam sent by God, or did she just go by herself and push herself forrd for whatever purpose. Read about Maryam, about Zakaria and Yahia, what is the difference.

We live in bad times for Muslims, because yes, there are many in history ho have considered Mariam a prophet, and do not know whether most, but at leas tmany sufis do consider her a prophet and mny others consider her a prophet too. Why on earth did God send angels to her, why on earth is she the only person together with her son that is herself an aya? for virginity? let me laugh. Where does the Qur'an speak about virginity at all or give a damn about it.

No centi I just ask you to see it for yourself. Maryam is indeed a prophet, chosen for the worlds and chosen for the women. One of the main prophets as far as I am concerned. Chosen doubly by God and purified for her mission.

The only reason some or many, I do not care, she is not considered a prophet is that she is a woman. So, the argument there are no women prophets, yes there is Maryam, but Maryam is not a prophet, how not, because women are not prophets. That is the whole argument.

In my view, one thing avery muslim must start and learn to do is think for himself or for herself. I am sure you are on that track, that is why you are here and why you ask questions. So do not take this I am saying as crticism but just as my experience which I hope may serve others. Think for yourself, reason yourself. And I know, because I know many other women, that we are afraid, at some state of consciousness or unconsciousness we are afraid that God might indeed is indeed misogynous. My experience is throw away any kind of fear and particularly that, He is not, He loves us, He created us as an expression of His deepest rahma. And he loves us all, and He loves His prophets, and He did love very tenderly Maryam. That is why she carried out her mission so faithfully and fully.

Read with the utmost detail about the wife of 'imraan, Maryam's mother, the things she said, her wishes and expectations for her daughter. If you can in Arabi, much better, because you have to go into detail to see the picture. Adn do not be afraid to question and analyse yourself.

              Salaam

              Salaam

                Salam huruf,

Thank you for your understanding. Maybe Maryam is a messenger but not a prophet. The reason I say that is because I think in 381 God gave us the d
                Definition of a prophet

God took a covenant from the Prophets, "For what I have given you of the Scripture and wisdom, then afterwards, a Messenger comes to you confirming what is with you; you shall believe in him and support him." He said, "Do you agree to this and accept this obligation from Me?" ThTherefore bear witness and I am with you among the witnesses." 381

The people used to be one nation, then God sent the Prophets as bearers of news and as warners. He brought the Scriptures down with them bearing the truth to judge among the people in their disputes. 2213

From the above verse prophets aree. Messengers of God who were given scriptures. As a result, every Prophet is also a Messenger, but not every Messenger is a Prophet.

This is my understanding but I might be wrong

                GodBless you

Maryam was a mesenger all right, I do not know why you define prophets as those with scrptures and others with not scriptures if anything it would be the oposite, if you bring a scripture you are bring a message, therefore you are a messenger.

Prophets as I see it are people with a mission from God, and messengers are sent with a mission too, which must be a message, not necessarily a scripture. Prophets are warners too. ?Is a warning a message? Or is a deed not a message?
On the other hand, what is a scripture? What people translate as scripture in Arabic is kitaab, and there are many "kitaab" in Qur'an that are not translated as scriptures. In fact kitaab may be something that is not written at all.

On the other hand, how do you know that maRyam was not with those thay made the pact with God? In fact we do not have an exhaustive list of prophets of the world, but in the Qur'an there is sura 21 al anbi'a where a relation is made of prophets one is mentionned after the other giving the outstanding traits of them and, there, duly remembered exactly as the others is Maryam

21.91 And (remember) her who fortified herself We breathed into her of Our spirit, and We made her and her son a sign for all peoples.

Does it say in that sura anywhere all those mentionned are prophets except Maryam?

No it does not. So why take her out of the enumeration? Is it God who is taking her out, or is it the reader?

                  Salaam

I have no idea what made you to claim that Maryam / Mary mother of Maseeh Isa is a Prophet (and remember all prophets were messengers that?s incontrovertible).. Sometimes being as women in the man controlled society is such a hefty task.. but it doesn?t mean that women quarrel against what God has planned.. That?s then total defile. Just coz all prophets names are not mentioned in the quran doesn?t mean that we can surmise there could have been female Prophets.. That?s so bizarre of conclusion.. It?s only a speculation.. Speculation cannot be equaled to the truth.. Even you claimed it unwittingly, that?s a statement that cannot be succored with Quranic in depth or basic meaning?
Let?s look at the following verse?I know Aswaj could be Wife / Spouse / husband?but this verse perfectly fit for wife?.
1338 And verily We sent messengers (to mankind) before thee (Mohamed), and We appointed for them (lahum) wives (Aswaj )and offspring, and it was not (given) to any messenger that he (yatiya) should bring a portent save by Allah's leave. For everything there is a time prescribed.
There is no concrete verse that proves that there was Prophet in female gender.. Pls prove with quran if you were really deliberate with your statement?
342 And when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.
Even in the above verse, there is no proof to claim Mary was a prophet? You were guessing, Miss Huruf, Imran?s wife wanted a son to sacrifice for the purpose of preaching god?s messages, but it didn?t happen, but she was satisfied with what God blessed her with.. It doesn?t mean that Mary was a mean person or second to Prophets.. That God knows how highly ranked she was by God? But we cannot claim she was a prophet.. Remember God furnishes example for two best women, one of those is Mary and King Pharaoh?s wife.. so we cannot claim Pharaoh?s wife was a prophet? That?s absolutely trespassing against quran..

In above verses, Maryam was given a glad tiding of a Prophet / Messenger to be born as her son? There is not in a single place in Quran mentioned ?Isa, Son of prophet Mary..? She was just a good person whom God admired? she will have her reward..
2191 has nothing to claim she was a prophet?.Positions of Prophets cannot be claimed by us.. but rather it should have been assigned by God..well known prophets with clear mentioning in the book is evidence and never mentioned prophets are something that no one can claim.. coz it?s unknown? Maryam?s name is mentioned alone and together with Isa many times, but still God didn?t mention it? But you claim She was a prophet that you will never ever prove with quran? That?s where things went wrong for few of those catholic who took Mary separate and Jesus separate?
Give everyone with proofs how you deduced it? So others will have a scope to put their thoughts into it..
God guide you to right path if your objective was unpremeditated? being a woman is no mean thing and being man is not a thing to boast around? God judge with heart?.

Dear Centi50,,, what was your intention by raising this question? Are you a female? Do you need equal right or equal in everything?

Mary was given revelations from God through the angels that she would give birth to Jesus and she was told details about him.(345) So it was unseen knowledge that came true given to her from God. Seems like she was a prophet in the sense that she was given a prophecy that came true.

                          Salam Amra94....
God's verses cannot be taken for granted so easily with one verse. 345 never permit you to conclude that Marryam was a prophet.. The messages which came to all prophets were meant to relay to people and nothing is deliberately or unknowingly can be kept without conveying or be hidden.. That's why messengers duty to pass it as it was revealed .. If you hypothetically assume that the message that Marryam received was a message for all the people of where Marryam lived then Marryam cannot keep it with her.. She should reveal to all.. We don't find any verses support that Marryam went to place to place in delivering the message of child to be born for her... As per Quran till she brought the child no one even knew of her close people.. That's a personal message.. As the below personal message for the wife of Prophet ibrahim... Note carefully Messengers talked to the wife of Ibrahim ..note feminine uses in the verse throughout..
                          1169 -74
And certainly did Our messengers come to Abraham with good tidings; they said, "Peace." He said, "Peace," and did not delay in bringing a roasted calf.
But when he saw their hands not reaching for it, he distrusted them and felt from them apprehension. They said, "Fear not. We have been sent to the people of Lot.
And his Wife was standing, and she smiled. Then We gave her good tidings of Isaac and after Isaac, Jacob
She said, "Woe to me! Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing!"
They said, "Are you amazed at the decree of Allah ? May the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Honorable.
And when the fright had left Abraham and the good tidings had reached him, he began to argue with Us concerning the people of Lot.
In above verses Ibrahim's wife directly speaking to angel messengers in the absence of Ibrahim... So the original message of bearing a child was passed to her.. At last only Ibrahim comes to know about glad tidings. So now can any one claim she was a prophet since she was given a message from God through angel messengers physically .. These are personal messages.. And there is a way God talk to people... Just coz Allah communicated with anyone in either of the mode mentioned in below verse doesn't mean they will become prophets.. But prophets are selection by God for specific task targeting for guidance of people being as an agent between God and Man..
4251 To no mortal does God speak but through revelation, from behind a curtain, or by sending a Messenger who reveals, by His permission whatever He pleases. He is the Most High and the All-wise.
Even in my understanding there was no prophets in Jin, and Human prophets were assigned for them for their guidance... That's why Jin flocked to Mohamed and were listening to quran and left with the message to spread to their community and further Jin themselves claimed that they heard a wonderful recitation (quran) after Torah.. So it shows they have been following the previous books before the advent of Quran..
Yes centi50; gathering knowledge is the best resort for salvation but while gathering claiming a thing in support of you as if your knowledge is complete is not part of gathering knowledge.. Gain the knowledge and be thorough and then with substantial proof claim anything... That's verification ..
In such way there are many examples that you can take as support for which God spoke to human in whatever the mode for some personal messages...
Claiming things which has no support in Quran is sheer blasphemy..
                          God bless believers...

Denying prophets is kufr, you are denying Maryam one of the main prophets, chosen by God for the world and chosen by God for the omen of the worlds.

Maryam is mentionned in sura 21 al anbia' among the prohets, but no, all of them mentionned there are prophets except Maryam.

If you ere as stingy with male prophets as with Maryam there would nto be one prophet left.

I is sickenning how sick some males can become at the mere idea that a woman should be a prophet. Nobody has ever put up such a fight to say somebody was or was nto a prophet. One would think anybody should be happy about a woman prophet, since it is indeed a good thing, a mercy of God, but no, God is prohibited by male meanness to send a woman or many women prophets. Some males prohibit it. They seem to believe that somehow they are stake-holders in prophethood by their mere male attributes and while not folloing the example of male prophets, God forbid, still want to participate in their glory. Laughable.
They do not cause any orejudice to Maryam but to thir own selves.

Thank God there are males who are not laughable, but are faithful, believers, and try at least to follow the example of prophets, male and female, and are therefore humble and not deluded by their male "powers".

Nice crusade the one to divest Maryam and any woman of prophethood. Prophecy is a male business don't you dare encroach on that monopoly, not even God may do that. Astaghfirullah.

The jealousy for womanhood runs strong and unacknowledged in some self-hating males. Unlike any prophet, they can't forgive womanhood. Like Lut's people.

                            Salaam

You have not brought in your reply any distinct proof or evidence to make your claim more viable for me or anyone, but rather more aggressive approach negating the presented proofs..
I cant help in this issue unless you bring tangible quran based proof..
Only matter you keep repeating saying that about Mary is mentioned in chapter 21 and rest mentioned are prophets and the chapter name is Prophets.. Anyhow there is no proof for chapter headings and who assigned those headings unknown and irrelevant and it was not a revealed heading?
Note in the same chapter 217-8 ?And We sent not before you, , except men (rijal) to whom We revealed , so ask the people of the message if you do not know. And We did not make the prophets forms not eating food, nor were they immortal .?
In these two verses note usage of words which are all masculine?
2191 And the one who guarded her chastity, so We blew into her through Our angel , and We made her and her son a sign for the worlds.
What is the proof in the above verse my dear forum members to claim that Mary was a prophet? Let me know pls, in case I am misguided ?
2190 So We answered him, and bestowed on him John, and We set his wife right for him; truly they vied with one another, hastening to good works, and called upon Us out of yearning and awe; and they were humble to Us.
Look at the above verse? does it prove that the wife of John also a prophet since she is included in this chapter?
God is talking about the few of the past people who were good and giving sort of righteous example to Mohamed and of course for us as well? I don?t even see a single person is called as prophet (nabi) in front of their respective names in this chapter but either by their name or indirect way that we have to find out with comparison.. its not anything to claim about prophet hood. Satan always make deception, the deceptive chapter heading made you to convince yourself that Mary was a prophet..
I love women or not that God knows.. no need certificate from a mortal?
May the One Created us bless believers

Sorry i have add these few verses to the topic in order it would give more sense for those who have not read these verse before...

                                333-39
33 Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of 'Imran over the worlds ?
34 Descendants, some of them from others. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
35 , when the wife of 'Imran said, "My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated , so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing."
36 But when she delivered her, she said, "My Lord, I have delivered a female." And Allah was most knowing of what she delivered, "And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and her descendants from Satan, the expelled ."
37 So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this to you?" She said, "It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account."
38 At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."
39 So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allah gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allah and honorable, abstaining , and a prophet from among the righteous."
Read the above few verses and lets find our whether Mary is considered as Prophet in these verses.. in 333 Noah and Abraham family is mentioned and they both prophets, so can we come to conclusion that Imran and Adam also could have been prophets? That?s not possible?
35-36 Imran?s wife is supplicating saying she is pledging what is in her womb for God ..in simple she wants her child to grow and preach God?s message..But when she found that it is SHE, imran?s wife saying to God ?My Lord I have delivered a female..? what actually she wanted for the purpose she intended is a male. But her supplication was not fulfilled.. coz God has a different plan.. She herself said.. ?MALE is not like FEMALE..?
But note 38-39 of Zackaria?s supplication, he didn?t specifically requested a male child but an offspring.. But God gave him a male child that also God named him and said he is a prophet and note the difference for Mary her mother named her.. God has his own words that cannot be changed with supplications unless it goes with his pre-planned word? that we all should understand..

Man, you invent like made, you have no idea and you attribute to God your own meanness, and also by the way to the mother of Maryam.

It may surprise you, but you are not God nor a delegate of God nor inspired by God.
The history of the people of Lut applies to you. They also disliked females.

                                    Salam

                                    2136
Say, "We have believed in God... and what was given to the prophets from their Lord."
We were given the prophecy that was given to Mary not only in the Qur'an, but also in the Gospel. This was not just a personal prophecy to Mary, as we all know this prophecy, Christians, Muslims and nonbelievers alike all know this prophecy. Do you believe what was given to Mary? You are supposed to, as you are supposed to believe what was given to the prophets from their Lord. You can play semantics all you like, but Mary was given a prophecy from God, which came true and we are all familiar with what was given to Mary, which makes her a prophet.

2"136 Say, , "We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims to Him
Amra94 this is the complete verse you referring in your reply.. And claiming that prophets are to be obeyed and Mary is one of them.. Note few prophets names only mentioned here and others were mentioned as prophets... And note how the verse is constructed..... .."FROM THEIR LORD.. ANY OF THEM... " these verses are masculine forms.. If Mary or any other female prophets were assigned by God, God would have specifically elaborated at least in one of the verses... Thanks God that quran is in Arabic...
BTW with this verse no one can claim Mary was a Prophet... No evidence at all...
Okay Huruf call me anything you wish and compare me with Lot society or anything worse.. I don't mind... For me God's certificate is vital... Since you reminded about Lot people and since the topic here is about woman Prophet.. I would like to say something about Lot society based on QURAN...God will people will put a thought to it and verify... Everyone thinks that in community of Lot, men were the only culprit... But for me big NO... God destroyed whole of that city and shifting Lot and his daughters away from it sparing his wife with the rest..
2931And when Our messengers came to Abraham with the good tidings, they said, "Indeed, we will destroy the people of that Lot's city. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers."
And indeed God said to destroy the entire city calling it's people were wrongdoers... God didn't single out saying to destroy the Men who practiced sodomy of that city.. If men were doing sodomy in one nation can we assume women in that city to be pure... Not probably n practically... Women cannot be kept away in a city... If families were living in that city then children would have been of course.. If children, then women would have had connection with men... What went wrong then???... Possible option 1..The women of that city would have never cared about what there husbands were practicing ..2 and would be keenly supporting to what the men doing ... 3 they could have been lesbians as well... . Why to destroy a city when the women of that city were pure ... That's totally unfair from God's point of view...
2932 Abraham] said, "Indeed, within it is Lot." They said, "We are more knowing of who is within it. We will surely save him and his family, except his wife. She is to be of those who remain behind."
Here most kind man Ibrahim worried about Lot and didn't even say that there were believing women also there.. When Ibrahim referred Lot be definitely mean his family too... God promised to save Lot family except his wife.. Family -AHL Or AALA (sometimes can be those who are believers with a prophet).. But here in this city it seems only Lot and his daughters...
1181 The angels said, "O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; , they will never reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night and let not any among you look back - except your wife; indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is the morning. Is not the morning near?"
So as per above verse Lot wife was one of those women who faced this destiny of wrath.. Observe carefully.. Messengers came to Lot and asked Him and his family to move during the night and even not told Lot to inform all the women of the city to join with him in order to save them...but not.. So it would have been a mammoth task for Lot to reach Evey household and inform them without knowing to the Men... Or else the message of destruction should have reached Lot well in advance and the women of the city should have informed repeatedly about a destruction to fall upon the city so that they could arrange themselves... But message was instant brought at night and asked to leave same night and morning was destruction... The destruction is not merely based on sodomy and more than that for which women also responsible...
I verify based on above conclusions women of Lot city also suffered the same agony which men faced with coz of one of the above reasons I indicated...
Now claiming only Men were wrong that society is purely biased statement... Don't forget when a destruction comes it destroyed men women and children as well. Coz God knows the destiny of children of such society as well...
No clue whether amra, centi50 or Huruf are born as Christians being mother toung Arabic and later you studied quran and started believing to certain extent and still unable to get out of the shackles of believing Mary to be as prophetic figure or something beyond that which was taught to you in your early life..i feel it monitoring your responses.. I find in my friends or even in this forum many who claim to be quran only but still they drag the hadith with them... Both categories are same.. People are are born and taught with certain set of beliefs but once they found the extreme truth and if they cannot discard their former belief then they will be in dilemma...
                                        God bless believers

And if she is not a prophet what is she? Bause obviously she is something, and something most important according to Qur'an, or are all those things mentionned and calling her an aya means nothing?

To wit that the loss for denying Maryam is nto Maryam's or God's loss, but the denier's loss.

                                          Salaam
