    Peace bro Khizar,

Nowhere in al-qur'aan is al-masjid al-haram called "kaaba". If you are talking about 597, "kaaba" is "al-bayt al-haram" NOT "al-masjid al-haram". The word "bayt" simply means "house" and it is not the same thing as "masjid".

597 God has made the kaaba to be the Restricted Sanctuary/al-bayt al-haram, to enforce for the people, and for the restricted month, and for the donations, and for regulation; that is so you know that God knows what is in heavens and what is in Earth, and that God is aware of all things.

One of the meanings of "kaaba" in classical arabic is "base" which fits perfectly in the context of this verse. Thus

597 God has made the base to be the Restricted Sanctuary, to enforce for the people, and for the restricted month, and for the donations, and for regulation; that is so you know that God knows what is in heavens and what is in Earth, and that God is aware of all things.

Bayt al-haram is "the base" for muslims. The first "bayt" built by Abraham was at bakkah. The very word "first" means there could be subsequent bayts. Thus there could be multiple bayt al-haram in different geographic areas and each of those bayts will be the base for the local muslims and where the local "al-masjid al-haram"/institution of hearing and obeying the forbidden can have its session, just like the Senate or the Congress has a session in a building. The "qibla" or the target/goal would be the institution/implementation of hearing and obeying the forbidden from al-qur'aan, and to be oriented to the truth at all times, and not the physical building of the bayt.

What the pagans did was take the common noun "kaaba" from al-qur'aan and name their black idol after that common noun many years after the death of Prophet Muhammad, thereby deceiving others into believing it is the "kaaba" mentioned in al-qur'aan.

        Peace bro Khizar,

        1. The camel and the sheep that give a lot of milk (safa) and the stone on which they are cooked/slaughtered (marwa) are from what The God makes us aware with so whomever visits the house or maintains there is no blame on him if he passes by/partakes in them and whoever does good voluntarily, then The God is Appreciative, Knowledgeable.

Please see the following for the complete discussion

          THE HISTORICAL EVIDENCE

One has to consider if there was any physical building by the name "Al-Masjid Al-Haram" at the time when the qur'aan was revealed. If there was no phyical building by that name at the time of revelation of the qur'aan, then it is impossible that the phrase "al-masjid al-haram" refers to a physical building in the qur'aan.

There is ZERO historical or archeological evidence of the existence of any physical building by the name of Al-Masjid Al-Haram at the time of revelation of the qur'aan, hence it is unlikely for it to mean a physical building according to the qur'aan. The physical building by the name of Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca was constructed many years after the revelation of the qur'aan, and was named after the common phrase "al-masjid al-haram" used in the qur'aan and therefore that physical building could not have been referred to in the qur'aan. Similarly, the physical building by the name of Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa was constructed many years after the death of Prophet Muhammad, and therefore cannot be "al-masjid al-aqsa" mentioned in the qur'aan.

          Peace Tanveer,

          Kaaba & Mecca In History

Edward Gibbon writes about the Ka'bah and its existence before the Christian era in his book
..... of blind mythology of barbarians - of the local deities, of the stars, the air, and the earth, of their sex or titles, their attributes or subordination. Each tribe, each family, each independent warrier, created and changed the rites and the object of this fantastic worship; but the nation, in every age, has bowed to the religion as well as to the language of Mecca. The genuine antiquity of Caaba ascends beyond the Christian era in describing the coast of the Red sea the Greek historian Diodorus has remarked, between the Thamudites and the Sabeans, a famous temple, whose superior sanctity was revered by all the Arabians; the linen of silken veil, which is annually renewed by the Turkish emperor, was first offered by the Homerites, who reigned seven hundred years before the time of Mohammad.

Diodorus Siculus was a Greek historian of 1st century BC who wrote Bibliotheca Historica, a book describing various parts of the discovered world. The following lines are the English translation of Greek quoted by Gibbon from the book of Diodorus Siculus (Diodorus of Sicily) describing the 'temple' considered to be the the holiest in the whole of Arabia.

And a temple has been set-up there, which is very holy and exceedingly revered by all Arabians.
It is interesting to know that Claudius Ptolemy of Alexandria, mathematician and astronomer, flourishing about a century after Pliny, undertook to make an atlas of the habitable world. He was not a descriptive geographer, and his book was intended to be no more than a commentary on his maps. He enumerated some hundred and fourteen cities or villages in Arabia Felix.

For example, Dumaetha, placed by Ptolemy just outside the northern boundary of Arabia Felix, must be the mediaeval Arabian Daumet, which is today the chief village of the great oasis of Jauf. Hejr, famous in the "times of ignorance" as the seat of a kingdom, and now Medayin Salih, is Ptolemy's Egra. His Thaim is Teima, now known for its inscriptions to have had temples and some sort of civilization as far back as 500 BC. It is the Tema of Job. In Lathrippa, placed inland from Iambia (Yambo), we recognize the Iathrippa of Stephan of Byzantium, the Yathrib of the early Arab traditions, now honoured as El Medina, the City of Cities.

Apart from this a place called Macoraba is also shown which is identified as Mecca (please refer to the map facing page 17 of reference ). G E von Grunebaum says
Mecca is mentioned by Ptolemy, and the name he gives it allows us to identify it as a South Arabian foundation created around a sanctuary.

Similarly, "al-masjid al-haram" as used in the qur'aan cannot be the present Kaaba in Mecca or any other kaaba for that matter. According to the qur'aan, the kaaba is "al-bayt al-haram"/the restricted sanctuary and not "al-masjid al-haram".

"Al-masjid al-haram" is off limits to the idolaters per 928 but "al-bayt al-haram" is for the entire mankind (2226-27), so they cannot be the same thing.

In 52, "al-bayt al-haram" is mentioned separately from "al-masjid al-haram" so the two cannot be the same.

            Sure they can?

            1. JaAAala Allahu alkaAAbata albayta alharama qiyaman lilnnasi waalshshahra alharama waalhadya waalqala-ida thalika litaAAlamoo anna Allaha yaAAlamu ma fee alssamawati wama fee al-ardi waanna Allaha bikulli shay-in AAaleemun

            005.097
Allah made the Ka'ba, the Sacred House, an asylum of security for men, as also the Sacred Months, the animals for offerings, and the garlands that mark them That ye may know that Allah hath knowledge of what is in the heavens and on earth and that Allah is well acquainted with all things.

            alkaAAbati = albayta alharama

"Al-masjid al-haram" is off limits to the idolaters per 928 but "al-bayt al-haram" is for the entire mankind (2226-27), so they cannot be the same thing.

How was it approachable before this year of theirs mentioned in 928?

928 O you who believe, those who have set up partners are impure, so let them not approach almasjida alharama after this year of theirs; and if you fear poverty, then God will enrich you from His blessings if He wills. God is Knowledgeable, Wise.

In 52, "al-bayt al-haram" is mentioned separately from "al-masjid al-haram" so the two cannot be the same.

            Yes they can similarly as?

            Bismi Allahi alrrahmani alrraheemi

Allah in same verse different names as is al-bayt/al-masjid al-haram!

            1. Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la tuhilloo shaAAa-ira Allahi wala alshshahra alharama wala alhadya wala alqala-ida wala ammeena albayta alharama yabtaghoona fadlan min rabbihim waridwanan wa-itha halaltum faistadoo wala yajrimannakum shanaanu qawmin an saddookum AAani almasjidi alharami an taAAtadoo wataAAawanoo AAala albirri waalttaqwa wala taAAawanoo AAala al-ithmi waalAAudwani waittaqoo Allaha inna Allaha shadeedu alAAiqabi

52 O you who believe, do not violate God's symbols, nor the restricted month, nor the donations, nor what is regulated, nor the safety made by albayta alharama; for they are seeking a bounty from their Lord and a blessing. And when it is permitted for you, then you may hunt. And let not the hatred of another people; because they had barred you from almasjidi alharami; make you aggress. And bond together in piety and righteousness, and do not bind together in sin and aggression. And be aware of God, for God's retribution is severe.

Hajj is at a certain time to al-masjid al-haram?

2189 They ask you regarding the crescent moons, Say "They are a timing mechanism for the people as well as for waalhajji." And piety is not that you would enter a home from its back, but piety is whomever is righteous and come to the homes from their main doors. And be aware of God that you may succeed

2191 And kill them wherever you find them, and expel them from where they expelled you, and know that persecution is worse than being killed. And do not fight them at almasjidi alharami unless they fight you in it; if they fight you then kill them, thus is the reward of the disbelievers.

2196 And complete alhajja and the visit for God. But, if you are prevented, then make what is affordable of donation, and do not shave your heads until the donation reaches its destination; but whoever of you is ill or has an affliction to his head, then he may redeem by fasting or giving a charity or a sacrifice. But if you are able, then whoever continues the visit until alhajji, then he shall provide what is affordable of donation; but for he who cannot find anything, then he must fast for three days during alhajji and seven when he returns; this will make a complete ten; this is for those whose family is not present at almasjidi alharami. And be aware of God, and know that God is severe in retribution.

2197 Alhajju is towards the months which have been appointed. So whosoever decides to perform alhajja therein, then there shall be no sexual approach, nor vileness, nor baseless argument in alhajji. And any good that you do, God is aware of it; and bring provisions for yourselves, though the best provision is righteousness; and be aware of Me O people of understanding.

2217 They ask you about the restricted month "Is there fighting in it?" Say "Much fighting is in it, and to repel from the path of God and to disbelieve in Him, and at waalmasjidi alharami, to drive its inhabitants out is far greater with God, and persecution is worse than being killed." And they still will fight you until they turn you back from your system if they are able. And whoever of you turns back from his system, and he dies while disbelieving, then these have nullified their work in this life and the next; these are the people of the Fire, in it they will abide eternally!

Hajj is at Al-bayt al-haram (Kaaba) same as al-masjid al-haram!

2225 Those who have rejected and repel from the path of God and waalmasjidi alharami that We have made for the people, for the dweller or the visitor to it; and whoever inclines to evil action in it, We will let them taste a painful retribution.

2226 And We have appointed to Abraham the location of albayti "Do not set up anyone with Me, and purify My baytiya for those who will partake, and those who will enforce, and those who kneel and prostrate."

2227 And call out to the people with bialhajji, they will come to you walking and on every transport, they will come from every deep enclosure.

2228 So that they may witness benefits for themselves and recall God's name in the appointed days over what He has provided for them of the animal livestock. So eat from it and feed the needy and the poor.

2229 Then let them complete their duties and fulfill their vows, and let them traverse at bialbayti alAAateeqi.

2158 The Safa and Marwah are amongst God's symbols. So whosoever makes hajja albayta, or is merely passing through, commits no error that he should traverse within them. And whoever donates for goodness, then God is Appreciative, Knowledgeable.

              Peace all,

Perhaps a simple diagram can explain this more easily

              http//i82.photobucket.com/albums/j265/tanveermd/refraction2.gif

In the above diagram, suppose the physical building is on the right side of the Earth and a person is standing on the left side, it is obvious that it is impossible for the person to face the building once the building is past the visible horizon and not in the line of sight of the person, due to Earth's curvature, thus the person is facing a point in space/sky instead of facing the building. This explains "the shifting of your face towards the sky" in 2144

Similar diagram where the person is at A and the building is at B and the line of sight is AC

              http//i82.photobucket.com/albums/j265/tanveermd/fig02.jpg

This shows how it is IMPOSSIBLE to face a physical building once it is beyond the visible horizon. Oh ..... but I forgot ..... according to tg, God asks us to do impossible things in al-qur'aan

Why impossible? What happens when you bow your head down during prayer?

Don't turn your head; face that direction; start walking and you'll run into Kaaba.

So very true, Nun de plume, but Muslims will continue insisting such provocative dilemmas, simply because it doesn't confound to their 'holy book'. Whatever their so-called "holy book" proclaims, that's it, it MUST be true regardless of evidence, reason and statuary injunctions. This is what I meant by delusional epilepsy, which begs for their brain surgeries. There exists nothing else for Muslims outside their "pandora box" (a book called Quran and supportive hadiths). Why are Muslims such fanatics about an ironage book, beats the heck out of 21st century intelligence.

Ok, so now if I am on another planet, or perhaps living on a lunar coloney, then I have to face the Earth to pray... fair enough.

What if the earth is at the Zenith or opposite to it?

Not that we have lunar colonies... but it is not totally impossible to have them a hundred years or two down the road.

And a temple has been set-up there, which is very holy and exceedingly revered by all Arabians.

What Gibbons gave was his own opinion NOT a REMARK by Diodorus Siculus. It is not pre-quranic evidence for the existence of a town called Mecca. There is no confirmation of any location above. Diodorus never mentioned a structure called Kaaba or a town named Mecca and neither did anyone else from pre-quranic times. We only start hearing about them in the 8th century CE, long after the revelation of the great reading. There are many locations in the vast area of Arabia that Diodorus Siculus talks about. Unlike unheard of Mecca, many of those known locations do have archeological evidence of magnificent temples that were likely revered by all Arabians. This would include places such as Hegra, Teima, Ta'if, etc.

Diodorus statements were actually taken out of context by Gibbons. There are other writings from Diodorus and others from that era such as Nonnosus, Photius and Strabo that point to the temple being in Hegra or its vicinity along the northwest coast of Arabia, not even close to present day Mecca.

This is what Diodorus said according to your quote

"And a temple has been set-up there, which is very holy and exceedingly revered by all Arabians."

As everyone can see Diodorus Siculus's ACTUAL statement does NOT mention Kaaba or Mecca and the temple he is talking about could be any of the very well documented pre-quranic temples found in Arabia in famous pre-quranic towns such as Hegra and Teima. So the author has only used Gibbon's personal opinion as proof. He has not brought any pre-quranic evidence.

There is nothing remarkable about veiling female pagan fertility goddesses and many ancient cultures did it. For example, the Anatolian fertility goddess Cybele was veiled. We know from Nabataean archeological evidence that the pre-quranic Arabs used a stone cube as a symbol for the fertility goddess Allat. So like the Anatolian fertility goddess Cybele's veil, which covered her whole body, Allat's stone cube was also veiled with a black "dress". The veil of Allat's stone cube in Mecca is simply a blind continuation of this entirely pagan custom of veiling female goddesses.

You need to tell us what it is about veiling a black cube with a black dress that has anything to do with monotheism. Why cover a stone cube with a veil? It is normal for pagans to esteem stones but why would monotheistic people esteem a stone?

We do know that stone cubes are mentioned and described in pre-quranic times as symbols of the goddess Allat and there are indeed many examples of stone cubic structures representing Allat in places other than present day Mecca, for example, in Petra. There is nothing extraordinary or remarkable about that. Other fertility goddesses also had black cubes and black stones associated with them. For example, Aphrodite (the Hellenized Allat) has a black stone associated with her and the ancient Greeks believed that her beauty was kept in a black cube. Black stones were also widely associated with the cult of Cybele, the ancient Anatolian fertility goddess; and similar black stones to the ones in Kaaba are, to this day, revered in Indian temples to the Hindu fertility goddess Kali, who is also known as Black Mother.

The above is false and misleading. Mecca is NOT mentioned by Ptolemy; that is Grunebaum's opinion and not what Ptolemy himself is recorded to have said. A place called Macroba is mentioned by Ptolemy. Ptolemy doesn't attach any significance to this Macroba and only mentions it in the passing. So there can be two scenarios

                                1. The place called Macroba is not present day Mecca.
                                2. The pre-quranic place called Macroba was in the location of present day Mecca but was renamed in post-quranic times from Macroba to Mecca to match the common noun in 4824 and give legitimacy to an insignificant pagan temple in it.

The fact is that neither Ptolemy nor any pre-quranic source says anything about Mecca or about a sanctuary. Ptolemy doesn't attach any significance to the place that he referred to as Macroba and doesn't point to it being in the location of present day Mecca.

From the available evidence, we know that Macoraba was somewhere in Arabia other than the location of present day Mecca. The classical geographers who described the area of present day Mecca said that the area was uninhabited. In fact, Ptolemy places Macoraba at approximately 73 East longitude and Yathrib at 71 East longitude. In terms of latitude, Ptolemy places it south of Carna in Southern Arabia. Present day Mecca on the other hand is West of Yathrib and North of Carna. So according to Ptolemy himself, it is impossible for Macoraba to be present day Mecca and it was somewhere in Southern Arabia hundreds of miles away to the southeast of Mecca. A likely candidate is a port city called Mochorba on the Hadramawt shore in South Arabia that was described by other geographers (Pliny). Moreover, there is no evidence that the location of present day Mecca fell on any trade route.

If one examines the closeness of the words "Macoraba" and "Mecca, Makka" or whatever, then the English comparison is completely useless. In order to compare in terms of closeness, we need to examine the words as they would have been originally written in Arabic. When we do this, we see that in Arabic the Kaf, Raa, and Baa are in fact the strong consonants that form the root. On the other hand, the Mim and presumably a final Taa Marbuta would have been weak letters that are added to the root. So the root would be KRB and this is completely different from the root MKK from which the town name Makka is derived. So linguistically there is no basis for this conjecture either.

                                Peace

                                  Peace Nun de plume, all,

None of the verses you quoted prove that "al-masjid al-haram" is the same is "al-bayt al-haram". Linguistically and according to the occurrence of "bayt" and "masjid" in al-qur'aan also it is impossible. A "bayt" is a "house" and not a "masjid".

None of the verses you quoted prove that "hajj" is at "al-masjid al-haram". The only direct evidence of where the "hajj"/debate is to be held is in 2158 where it says "hajj albayta".

"Al-masjid al-haram" is the institution of hearing and obeying the forbidden and its vehicle is the physical building "al-bayt al-haram"; they are not the same. This is just like saying "the debate is at Congress/Senate" which will be nonsense, instead of saying "the debate is at the building where Senate/Congress is having its session". Thus the session of "al-masjid al-haram" can be held at the physical building of "al-bayt al-haram", and "hajj" is not at "al-masjid al-haram" but at "al-bayt al-haram".

                                  Peace

Ok, so now if I am on another planet, or perhaps living on a lunar coloney, then I have to face the Earth to pray... fair enough.

What if the earth is at the Zenith or opposite to it?

Not that we have lunar colonies... but it is not totally impossible to have them a hundred years or two down the road.

                                    Peace Tanveer,

I read these verses in context as hajj is to almasjidi alharami

The idea of hajj being a debate like we are doing now is a bit strange; do not shave heads, no sex, give donations, sacrifice, fast for family not present etc.

                                    Peace all... peace

                                        Peace Nun de plume,

You keep confusing "bayt" with "masjid" as used in al-qur'aan. According to all the occurrences of "bayt" and "masjid" in al-qur'aan, "bayt" only means "house" or "home" and nowhere it means the same as "masjid".

                                        Some examples

1223 And the woman, in whose house (baytiha) he was staying, attempted to seduce him away from himself. And she closed the doors and said "I have prepared myself for you." He said "I seek refuge with God, He is my Lord, He made good my residence; the wicked do not succeed."

5136 But We only found in it one house (bayt) of those who had submitted.

415 And those women who commit lewdness, you shall bring four witnesses over them from amongst you; if they bear witness, then you shall restrict them in the homes (buyooti) until death takes them, or God makes for them a way out.

1680 And God has made your homes (buyootikum) a habitat, and He made for you from the hides of the livestock shelter which you find light for travel and when you stay, and from its wool, fur, and hair you make furnishings and goods, for a while.

                                        Now lets come to "masjid".

We know and Sunnis acknowledge the fact that the building named Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa was built during the Ummayad dynasty long after the revelation of the Qur'aan. Hence, it cannot be "al-masjid al-aqsa" talked about in Chapter 17. Even the staunchest sectarian is forced to acknowledge this fact. The question is that given this fact, and if "masjid" is a physical building, what does "al-masjid al-aqsa" mentioned in 171 refer to, when there was no physical building by that name in existence ?

171 Most glorified is the One who summoned His servant (Muhammad) during the night, from al-masjid al-haram to al-masjid al-aqsa, whose surroundings we have blessed, in order to show him some of our signs. He is the Hearer, the Seer.

                                        1. It has been made lawful for you during the night of fasting to approach your women sexually. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. The God knows that you used to betray your selves so He Has accepted your repentance, and forgiven you; now you may approach them and seek what The God Has written for you. And you may eat and drink until the white thread is distinct from the black thread of daybreak; then you shall complete the fast until night; and do not approach them WHILE you are committed in the institutions of hearing and obeying/"masajid". These are The God's boundaries, so do not transgress them. It is such that The God makes His revelations clear to the people perhaps they may be forethoughtful.

Verse 2187 actually confirms that "masjid" is an institution of hearing and obeying and not a physical Mosque/Temple. Clearly, no sane person would have sexual relations with his or her spouse WHILE in any public place, let alone the local Mosque/Temple, so this part of the sign would be meaningless if one interprets "masajid" as Mosques/Temples. The sign simply says that we shouldn't have sexual relations with our spouses while we are committed to "the institution of the hearing and obeying" (masajid) of The God (such as while we are reciting the great reading in our homes).

For further details please read the article at the following link

                                        http//free-minds.org/articles/gods_system/name.htm

Also please see the classical arabic meanings of "masjid" under the root SJD (siin-jiim-dal) at the following link

                                        http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm

Thus "al-masjid al-haram" as used in al-qur'aan means "the institution of hearing and obeying the forbidden" as shown in my article in an earlier post. Example would be an institution of government for implementing hearing and obeying of the forbidden/restrictions mentioned in al-qur'aan. Such an institution will need a vehicle or a physical building where its sessions can be held and that physical building can be "al-bayt al-haram".

All we can infer from 2196-197 is that "hajj"/debate is being held near the simultaneous session of "al-masjid al-haram" but we CANNOT infer from it that "hajj" (physical) is to "al-masjid al-haram" (a non physical entity), because

FIRSTLY it will contradict with 2158 which clearly tells us that "hajj" is linked with "al-bayt", and "bayt" as used in al-qur'aan is not synonymous to "masjid".

SECONDLY "hajj" is for people in general (2227) and "al-masjid al-haram" is banned for those who set up partners with The God (mushrikeen) per 928.

Hence the "hajj" CANNOT BE TO "al-masjid al-haram" for these two reasons.

The physical building of "al-bayt al-haram" can be used for "al-masjid al-haram"/the institution of hearing and obeying the forbidden, and it can also be used for the "hajj"/debate. Hence, during the "hajj", there will be a simultaneous session of "al-masjid al-haram"/the institution of hearing and obeying the forbidden, both in the same physical building of "al-bayt al-haram".

Those who are participating/attending the "hajj" in "al-bayt al-haram" and are unable to afford the donation, and their families are not participating/attending in "al-masjid al-haram", they are required to fast for 3 days during "hajj" and 7 days when they return to their homes. This makes sense because those whose families are not oriented to the truth from our Lord or are not participating/attending/present in the institution of implementing the hearing and obeying of the restrictions of the system/deen, should go back earlier to teach them based on what they heard.

                                        Peace

16 Bayt (the Sanctuary) in Qur'an?

2125 And We have made Al-Bayta to be a model for the people and a security. And you shall take the site of Abraham in affirmation. And We had entrusted to Abraham and Ishmael "You shall purify My Bayt for those who visit, those who are devoted, and for those who kneel and prostrate."

2127 And as Abraham raised the foundations for Al-Bayti with Ishmael "Our Lord accept this from us, You are the Hearer, the Knowledgeable."

2158 The Safa and Marwah are amongst God's symbols. So whosoever makes ajja Al-Bayta, or is merely passing through, commits no error that he should traverse within them. And whoever donates for goodness, then God is Appreciative, Knowledgeable.

397 In it are clear signs the site of Abraham. And whoever enters it will be secure. And God is owed from the people to make ijju Al-Bayti, whoever can make a path to it. And whoever rejects, then God has no need of the worlds.
