Hitting One's Wife.

Tell me what jinns have to do with "wife beating"
How do the Quranists translate "Idhriboohunna" ??Please follow the actual argument.
-
Peace,
I haven't understood why we must force ahead an explanation of certain words, just like that!?
We all are here to learn and share, so why push so hard?

Dear sister
Just to know where Quranists stand in arabic.
I enjoy when they show liguistic somersaults and find no way. Then they start explaining things on
May/may not basis. -
Peace,
Thanks for your honesty!!!

The Quran by all its exegesis, clearly emphasizes that this "god" (the God of the Quran) is in desperate need of humans and cannot stand anyone from disobeying Him.
Perhaps the following might be of some use
http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=15057.msg141643#msg141643Hi Nadeem,
I suggest it would be a good idea to explore this subject in depth, perhaps at the appropriate section. I was just thinking that if one were to take away all the capitalized pronouns decorously elevated, such as HE, HIM, HIS, WE, WHO, during a sentence/verse, what significance would that bring about? Have you ever thought why "the god" (al-ilah) has been raised to become The God (Allah) if it weren't for any other? Anyhow, I'll keep that for a later discussion.
Peace!

It is interesting to see how Arabs take this verse.

I am not surprised at this man, I am surprised at these women who do not know how to defend their rejection of beating. His argument is full of flaws, e.g. he says a woman is created from a crooked rib, yet not a single woman asks him where in the qur'aan is the creation of the female different from that of the male, or ask if "takhaafuuna nishuuzahunna" means "not prepare his meal".
Maybe this is the answer to many people, including comicdancer, why this understanding has prevailed. Muslims, including women, are made to believe in nonesense and consider it truth (like the creation of women or the role of women as cooking and cleaning which suddenly became divine) and this wrong understanding paved the way to this kind of further misunderstanding of words like adribuuhunna. They just instinctly know it is wrong but cannot see why because they believe in all the misconceptions that lead to this wrong understanding.

Aren't you being racist by generalising that "Arabs" think like this?
-
For those who say the verse says "Leave them" - what does that mean?
-
Divorce them?
-
Abandon them?
-
Let them carry on rebelling?
-
Something else - What?
It seems you have not understood the basic wording of the verse in question. Where do you get "let them carry on rebelling" from?
Have you read 434?

I am not a racist.
I meant to point out Arabs take the meaning of this verse as "beating" and "light beating".
I hope no body else has taken my remarks in the way you have taken it.
My apologies if some one has.... -

With your excellent knowledge of Arabic can you tell us the meaning of Idribuhunna .
Hit them

I agree with you that "Separate them" to mean to be away from the wife is not conveyed by Idribuhunnna.
How about "separate them" or "distance them" if the problem is about two wives assembling/coming together/nushuz to annoy the husband. It makes sense to make a distance between the two wives who are creating trouble.

Peace cosmicdancer,
Why discuss or ask, when you know and have made your decision? You weren't going to change your mind no matter what you heard here. ignore
You're right - I probably wouldn't have changed my mind - but then most people on an internet forum are not truly there to change their mind - but to tell others what they think.
There's nothing wrong with that - that's the way we are.
But sometimes - despite your intentions - things can and do affect your thinking.
I was also curious to hear how 'Progressive and Free Thinking ' Muslims explained the verse about hitting one's wife.
I was sure that hitting would be a problem for any civilised human being in this day and age.
But I was curious about how people here would be able to get round it.
It has been intereseting and I have definitely leant alot - even though my own view hasn't changed.
