What about God's instructions for the calendar before the appearance of the Qur'an, as chosen people of Israel got precise information about it in the Torah, and used it for cca some 2000 years? This stance was a reaction to larger developments within Islamic jurisprudence, particularly the reformulation of the Fiqh away from early foreign or regional influences and toward more eminently Islamic bases such as the Qur'n. This assertion of Qur'nic primacy was accompanied by calls for an abandonment of the Sunna. Shfi''s insistence upon the impossibility of contradiction between Sunna and Qur'n can thus be seen as one component in this larger effort of rescuing the Sunna He campaigned tirelessly to justify use of the Sunna as the second primary source alongside the Kur'n against those who would accord the hadth no role in the derivation of the shar'a on the argument that the degree of conflict in the hadth, the inadequacies of the guarantee against corruption, fraud or error afforded by the isnds rendered the hadth unfit for the sacred role of declaring the divine intent underlying the Kur'n's declarations. Asked point-blank whether the Sunna could ever be abrogated by the Qur'n, Shfi' had bluntly replied that that could never happen. Were the Sunna to be abrogated by the Qur'n, the Prophet would immediately introduce a second sunna to indicate that his first sunna had been abrogated by his second sunna- in order to demonstrate that a thing can be abrogated only by its like (mithlihi) . Later scholars, writing when the juridicial legitimacy of the Sunna could be taken for granted (thanks largely to Shfi''s efforts!), were less inclined to adopt his inflexible stance. To their minds the reality of this sort of inter-source abrogation was proven by several "indisputable" instances the changing of the qibla towards Mecca and away from Jerusalem, and the introduction of the penalty of stoning for adultery. The following passage from Qurtub (al-Jmi' li ahkm al-Qur'n) is representative in this regard ...the Qur'n may be naskhed by the Qur'n and the Sunna by the Sunna. The Qur'n may, in addition, be naskhed by the Sunna, as has occurred in the case of Q.2180, which was replaced by the Sunna ruling no wasiya in favor of an heir. Mlik admitted this principle, but Shfi' denied it, although the fuqah all admit, in the instance of the penalty for adultery, that the flogging element of Q.242 has been allowed to lapse in the case of those offenders who are condemned to death by stoning. There is no explanation for the abandonment of the flogging element other than that the penalty all now acknowledge is based on the Sunna, i.e. the practice of the Prophet. Hi mmKhan, I read your article, but since the article doesn't mention slaughter anywhere, it still leaves me wondering regarding my question. Are you saying ritual slaughter is a requirement or not? Peace brother, Araaf Salaam and hello brother, When Allah did not mention of slaughtering then it is not required, I should say, we have to remember Allah's name while killing the animal for food. No ritual slaughter is required. Instead better to cut off animals head in one shot to avoid torturing that poor animal, so that the animal should not feel pain. If one looks at the sky through the eyes of a 7th century camel herder or caravan navigator, it becomes much easier. In my opinion, the seven heavens or seven domes actually represent the pagan concept of the gods on seven objects in space known in the 7th century (Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Venus or ?naked eye planets? according to the Ptolemaic theory) until the observations and research of Copernicus put an end to that. Corresponding to the seven heaves were seven Hells, as so vividly described by Dante. There are other descriptions of different models of Earth or many earths and each with domes over them. Whatever the ancient description may be, none of them in any way represent a scientific fact or reality. I agree with you that its about what the people can see or what can be known through human observation. But its also talking about what is in our domain (ie solar system) There are seven planets besides Earth. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These represent seven major orbits.

There is no way there will ever be agreement over this. Some people will say you need to learn more and it will be clear, others simply re-translate words until they fit what they want and others will create examples which fit their needs, as is the case in the link provided above. There are a couple of inheritance calculators on the net, but they don't really follow the guidelines as set out in the Koran and they provide different results. The Koran is neither a science text-book nor a maths instruction manual, so I would leave it as spiritual guidance and not expect everything to add up precisely down to 10 decimal places. Hello Masoomboy, just a couple of questions I am wondering how you decided that "walad" means son here, considering that you admit that the context is ambiguous? There are plenty of examples of walad meaning offspring/children/child/begotten; how do we know that it shouldn't be rendered as "offspring"? As well, how would you translate "ittakhatha"? It is not consistent with any Christian teaching to say that God took/made for himself a son; Christians do not believe that. The only possibility I can see is, perhaps, a reference to the doctrine of "eternal generation"; which would require a translation of "took from himself a begotten/offspring". Yet, this would change the "standard" interpretation of this text, so that it would have nothing to do with saying "son of God". Rather, it would be an objection to the claim that Christ is the son of God because God eternally begets him. Nevertheless, I do not feel that there is any warrant to make this (and similar texts) about Christianity. It seems to me that 4171 is sufficient with regard to this issue; there "ittakhatha" is not found, and it is clearly, and contextually, a reference to Christian beliefs in that part of the world. I also believe that here "walad" should be translated as offpsring/begotten. Thanks for sharing !! Moreover, Dr Zulfiqar Siyal revealed that on average 100 women are raped every 24 hours in Karachi city alone. Statistics have been produced which suggest that every three hours a woman is raped in Pakistan which doesn?t include the rape cases which are not reported due to social stigma and marital rape cases are not even taken into account. I, thus, ask you what reproductive justice are we offering to the women of Pakistan? &

Thanks hawk... I didn't see the connection between 285 and the present state of muslims until you put two and two together. I'm glad the quran spells out the punishment as well. There are quite a few verses that explain in detail why hadeethists are getting crushed left and right and maybe this will help some of them see sense and get out of this loony tribalism.

I feel better after reading your comments but I don't want to mistake this for not following the sunnah or by easing the thought of what I've done even if I haven't gone in deep enough. My every intention is to stay away from zina now that I know what it is, I am really grateful that I didn't go far in it that I would ruin my existence by doing an unlawful act. I've changed my ways that I would not give a 2nd glance to a woman on the street. I'm staying away from tv (unless the program is acceptable and I'm spending some family time) and I'm giving up music and caffeine since these elements sway my emotions; I'm also strictly using the internet to learn Arabic and Islam. Ok but zina IMO is Adultery not fornication (because I don't think a just God would punish an adulterer (someone who has had sexual relations with someone other than the one they have made a life long commitment to) the same as a fornicator, who hasn't betrayed anyone) so technically IMO you haven't come near zina but people on these forums have different understandins of zina and sex in general. Given what appears to be an addiction, this sort of hardline and committed approach is IMO a good move. But with the music....I don't know, I think huruf is right, this is too much hardline. I'm a musician and I use music for exercise, motivation (for character), reverence and so on. It fires up the spirit which is supposed to help fight addiction. It's will power that is meant to get you away from your addiction and more towards what your reason (aql) is saying. IMO music is a good source. But what is good for one may not be good for another. I'd keep in mind that the God is Perfect, Beneficent (forgiving, understanding, generous, sustainer, provider). With such a God, and your sincere approach to repentance and reform, I think your fear is a bit excessive. It's within your potential to change. You can do it!! Godwilling/allowing you'l do it!

Peace Zulf, How does the intelligent creative force communicate knowledge about reality to us human beings? Is it only through the books that we have come to label as the religious books? Can there be other ways that teachings are relayed to us? Why have the religious books gained such a strong position among all the wisdom available the world? Is it because these books are easy to follow by sheeple and easy to misuse for power purposes by the clever ones? If the quran is from Allah, does this rule out other teachings as false? Even if the quran would be the only literal text sent down by Allah, does this rule out other teachings as true? Aren't people able to get inspiration from Allah to see the truth, through themselves, or can guidance from Allah only come through a book? N.B. (this is bytheway not about hadith!, which is just a means for some clergy to stay in power, and for others to exhibit their perverted inner selves) All truth is from the god and it doesn't matter who said it. The great reading is only truth as far as how one understands its examples. There are many people who don't understand the examples/allegories given in the great reading correctly and for them it would actually lead them astray and away from the truth. See 226

The two sides of the political spectrum only create two different flavours of problems. To correct my use of a politically charged term, I meant 'doubters'. Contemporary "no such thing as good or evil" types. This is becoming very common and it's ridiculous watching quranists, having rejected the clear deception of one sect then turning around and trying to almost befriend another sect. I see believers doing things like mentioning God and appending (if he exists) as if they're afraid of those who know only conjecture. What are you doing pretending to be blind, when you have a light? But we must also be careful and regognize that the background many Quranist comes from can play a huge role in how he understands things. Many times Quranist who are influenced by Sunni Islam or live in countries were societies are very restrictive often bring these ideas with them. We must first try to understand how the Quran sees things. There are different types of kaffirs the Quran tells us about. Some were skeptical others mocked the prophet and others tried to kill him. In Medina there were the hypocrites who prayed with the believers but the Quran considered them more dangerous than the pagans of Mecca. So its normal for people to understand a kaffir differently. Some see it as a theological issue while others see it as a behavioral issue. The Koran places certain characters with a kaffir. It may se the issue differently than how humans sees it since God sees the heart of humans while we don't. This is not Sunni Islam where everything is neatly categorized and where they have the 5 pillars to categorize who is a kaffir. Many Sunnis consider all of us as kaffirs. So we must first try to see how the Quran sees it and this takes reflection and most of all eleminating many ideas we were raised with.
