I'm trying to find out about 'oaths'' One person has tried to discredit Islam publicly by quoting sura 662 which talks about cancellation of oaths in book reviews on Amazon. I want to correct it with another review if possible. I found 612-3 which talk about keeping knees word. I don't want to give a lengthy reply but preferably an authoritative reply from the Quran itself. I'm here to learn from everyone so I would much appreciate your suggestions. Please read, write, and join the conversations; this is a very open forum that will entertain, debate, and even accept well-thought out conclusions that can be backed by evidence. So you mentioned that you picked up a few translations of the Qur'an? Have you read it all the way through? What is your first language if you don't mind me asking. I speak English, Spanish, and (now) some Arabic, and the first way I heard the Qur'an was actually an audio book. I only downloaded it that way because I wanted to listen to it in my car on my way to work. Unbeknownst to me, Qur'an = Recitation, so I think listening to the book be recited (or read) by someone in my native language, as opposed to reading it on a page, had a stronger effect for some reason. Now that I can appreciate the Arabic as well, the Qur'an is undeniable in my opinion. I am a student and teacher of language and linguistics, so this aspect of the Qur'an is very interesting to me. By the time I was a third of the way through the book I knew I was Muslim, and by the time I finished it I had already been trying to implement aspects of the teachings in my daily life. This is of course where most people run into the traditional Islam that you speak about. Coming from an Atheistic upbringing, and being very wary of cults, I decided to heavily investigate the various Madhabs, Hadith collections, and scholarly traditions that exist throughout the diverse world of Islam in order to better understand the common points among them and the Qur'anic teachings; that investigation continues, and will continue for my life I am sure. And many atheists are really good people too, they may just be turned off by the state of world religions from GOD. Faith is in realization and behavior anyways and less has little to do with classical worship, people have been deluded. I suppose your fianc? is a sectarian muslim based on your formulation? I have taken a similar path concerning islam and it has ruined my marriage basically due to my wife's heavy sectarian influenced faith. That I am very active concerning the faith with independent research and declaration has not helped either because she has seen my so-called "deviation" very clearly. She took evil-spirited measures against me. I think you may be careful marrying a traditionally religious person unless the person is moderate and accepting. Muslim, the word, is not exactly any name of a religion but it is an attribute of a state or condition due to the meem letter introducing the root word and mu - salam means someone (even something) who is sound/pristine literally. You probably know that shattered/broken is an antonym of sound and the mission is simply to be whole (holy). The connotation as submitter is likely a lie that emerged at some time in history, because the meaning of "aslama l'Rabb" is simply "be sound towards/relating the Sustainer". Hello! I am a young man who was given a link to this website by a Muslim on a different site called Omegle. Here are a few things that I would like to point out about myself. I was born and raised a Christian. I am 17 years old, living in the USA. I am now an Atheist, although I hate that word because of the negative connotation it carries. I read the book Life of Pi, and that is what made me decide to learn about all the different religions out there. I highly recommend that book for anybody who is on this or any religious forum. I know enough about Jesus, but I know almost nothing about any other faith. Hello Everyone! My name is Hamder, I am a newly converted/reverted Muslim (6 months ago), Im 31 living in Scandinavia. I was born into a non practicing muslim household (Shia/Sufi). Growing up I had little to no knowledge of islam, a year ago I was introduced to some online lectures and after a period of time listening to the lectures, and of course finally converting and declaring my faith I began to practice sunni islam (as my friend and sponsor who helped me with the practicalities is also sunni)... During my very short time in Islam I might have heard hundreds of lectures, I have read some Quran, and of course countless discussions with brothers regarding my thoughts and concerns, not one to be satisfied with a "brush off answer", I have always been extremely critical of the Hadith, and the countless rules in sunni islam. Using my critical thinking and of course basic knowledge of Quaran, I simply cannot accept that Allah (SWT) would make the path to him so complicated, difficult, confusing...I'm sure everyone here understands what I mean. My friends simply brush off my concerns as me being uneducated in Islam, and being an "infant in Islam" - but in my heart, I know that how I'm practicing is in fact incorrect. I fell upon this website, and I'm hoping that I might be able to make some friends, and get better connectd. Hi everyone. My name is the same with my nickname, and it's the Turkish version of Ahmad. I opened my eyes into a sublime sunni environment in 1977, and enjoyed all the benefits of a secular state until recently. My parents never bugged me with their religious ideas, and I will always respect them for keeping their abstract ideas to themselves. I started playing with the idea of migration since August 14th, 2001, the day a very fierce and ignorant man took over the reins of my country. I won the Diversity Visa Lottery in my first attempt in 2011 and relocated to the US the next year. I opened a couple of mall kiosks with my savings, and all that foot traffic exposed me to a variety of people who had stories ranging from a week ago to two millennium ago. Among these people were missionaries, and I even became friends with one, yet we can not agree on anything apart from cars and economy. These people are 100% invested into their crazy stories, and I can see a broken, lost soul following them in hope for salvation. People expressing their religious beliefs openly, and trying to get others into their temples to pray for their idols... This was new to me. They would be cursed away, or may be beaten up by others in a moderately religious environment in Turkey. I would like to thank to a certain Chinese-American missionary who helped me get where I am now. His truly crazy story helped me understand how religions block brain cells. After understanding how religions work, I quickly shed my sublime Sunni muslim skin and became a perfectly healthy agnostic. At this point, I want to mention that I tried to read Tanakh Bible and Quran multiple times. I stopped reading really early in both books. In Tanakh Bible, I couldn't get past the part in Genesis where god says he will notice the monotheists from their circumcised penises. In Quran, I couldn't get past verse 434 where the woman ends up with a slap in the face, or beaten up, or beaten up (lightly) in brackets. Whenever I laid my hands on a different translation of Quran, I opened that verse to see if she's still having a hard time or not. She ended up the same in all translations including the English versions I came by. It didn't make sense since the verse escalated in a rational way, and then the husband lost it. Well, I gave up for a few months, and then I was on fire again, looking for an explanation to this. I already knew Quran had very interesting scientific facts that were surfaced within the last century, and it made sense in a lot of ways, but then it didn't make sense in many other areas, especially when it was about women. I understood what hadith and sunnah was, and I deliberately stayed away from them since highschool years. Finally I came by a translation by Yasar Nuri Ozturk, and then Edip Yuksel, and then more in English where the woman in 434 didn't get beaten up. Although I do not necessarily agree with some of their ideas, I would like to thank to Yasar and Edip for their great work. Rahsad is long gone, so thanking him wouldn't make sense, but he was a major player in getting people out of mud. They helped me understand that why Quran or Islam did not make sense all this time. Those people in verse 27 had the control on everything !!! The most important message, Oneness of God is not an easy concept to deal with, and it takes continuous questioning and critical thinking to keep one's mind on track. When I found out who the mushriks are, and that I was guided to the right path, I actually shed those tears of joy mentioned in Quran. Assalamu Alaikum! I reverted over a year ago, but my contact with Islam goes back to '08. I made my public shahada as a Sunni, but constantly found myself debating small details, with brothers. I would always ask "where, in the Quran, does it say that". I would get the reply that it was NOT in the Quran but was a hadith. This always troubled me and I'm actually relieved to finally find out I'm not the only Muslim in the world who accepts the Quran as the word of Allah (swt) while remaining skeptical of hadith and other "Islamic" tradition/ritual. Please do not misunderstand - I do not "reject" hadith and I do think Muhammed (saw) was probably a great Muslim who should be used as an example. I just disagree with my Sunni brothers on two points (1) you need the hadith to understand the Quran. Why? Is it because I'm not good at understanding things or because God isn't good at explaining them? (2) LAW (sharia) is the combination of the Quran and the Sunnah. I have to disagree, LAW is from Allah (swt) alone. He is my creator and who I will have to answer to.
