    Salaam,
I had an friend who told me what he really thought of Islam & Muslims one day.
    His misconceptions were;
    Mohammad was a Paedophile
    You're all terrorists
    You hate Dogs
You can't be married to non-Muslims
A bunch of dumb Arabs wrote The Qur'an
It's a desert religion for desert people
You have to bring your children up Muslim
You have to go to the Mosque
You can't make songs about Islam
I haven't seen him since! voodoo

      peace all,

Almost a year after this thread was started, not one response was given to any of the misconceptions listed.

But it is always better to light a candle than to curse the darkness is it not? ;D

An initial draft for the following misconceptions have now been done

      Misconception Death for apostasy
      Misconception Stoning to death allowed
Misconception Must be "Muslim" or you will go to Hell
      Misconception No freedom of religion
      Misconception Women confined to houses
      Misconception Statues/images forbidden
Misconception A man and woman cannot be alone together
Misconception Religion and science/reason/knowledge are not compatible
      Misconception Alcohol is forbidden
Misconception Islam and The Quran promotes a clash of civilisations
Misconception Islam promotes honour killings of women
Misconception Allah is the God for Muslims
Misconception Forced marriage is allowed in Islam
      Misconception Muslims reject Jesus
Misconception Muhammad was the founder of Islam
      Misconception All Muslims are Arabs
Misconception Islam was spread by the sword
Misconception Islam and The Quran promotes fighting, war and terrorism
Misconception Two female witnesses are equivalent to one male witness
Misconception Women receive less than men in issues of inheritance
Misconception Males/Females are required to be circumcised
Misconception Martyrs will receive 72 virgins in paradise
Misconception Woman/Eve created from the rib of Man/Adam
Misconception Islam and The Quran promotes suicide bombing
Misconception Muslim men have to grow a beard
Misconception Gold and silver are banned for Muslims
Misconception Islam and The Quran promotes 'jihad' or 'holy war'
Misconception Islam and The Quran promotes slavery
Misconception In Islam homosexuals must be put to death
Misconception Polygamy - Muslim men can have as many wives as they wish

The following remain unfinished, thus if anyone wishes to write something, feel free

women are required to cover up
      wife beating is allowed
women have no rights in Islam
the punishment for theft is cutting off the thief's hands

The site will be catered to misconceptions about islam from non-Muslims, not misconceptions about Islam from traditional Muslims, although some content will overlap. If anyone can think of other misconceptions, feel free to mention them.

Site launch will be with or without the unifinished ones above, in mid April, GW.

"Misconception In Islam homosexuals must be put to death" - google the following as it helps define homosexuality in it's proper quranic sense. "andrea dworkin" - wiki that one and go to her relationship. (or should i post the link?) google "swedish homosexual brain science".

These two provide a solution to the assumed scriptural silence on lesbianism.

"Misconception Statues/images forbidden" - yes they are, it is related to quran 2101102 in the arabic term of what is translated as magic.

"Misconception Martyrs will receive 72 virgins in paradise" - that's the lowest number, the rest of us will get more.

"Misconception Islam and The Quran promotes 'jihad' or 'holy war'" - we must fight against oppression, otherwise quran 4738 the god will remove us with another.

"Misconception Muslim men have to grow a beard" - we are apes... we shouldn't lie. I also understand that clean facial hair helps with bronchial hygiene.

"Misconception Two female witnesses are equivalent to one male witness" - only when promoting more women in courts... women don't like being alone.

"Misconception Islam was spread by the sword" - well if you want to spread butter and only have a sword, well you would need to spread islam with it. And it was in the early days. Though the bread didn't get to the mouths of people until after the ummayyads fell. And then everyone was so eager to eat after the forced starvation.

"Misconception All Muslims are Arabs" - inshallah, inshallah. We shall all one day be arabs, and speak arabic.

"Misconception Stoning to death allowed" - it's called guns

"Misconception A man and woman cannot be alone together" - aye they get married or let him drink her milk.

"Misconception Allah is the God for Muslims" - the god always answers our prayers.

"Misconception Women confined to houses" - these days it's women confined out of houses.

"Misconception Islam promotes honour killings of women" - euthenasia, involuntary and voluntary.

"Misconception Alcohol is forbidden" - you've had too much, you should go home.

"Misconception Must be "Muslim" or you will go to Hell" - hell on earth for sure.

"Misconception Males/Females are required to be circumcised" - if you don't then they'll always be connected to their mothers wombs.

FAR, the site is primarily based on solid Quranic references and logic.

Therefore, the points you bring up are irrelevant as they are not based on these things. I recommend reading the forum rules

            Misconception Islam is a religion

            Selam Wakas

I am starting to believe more and more that Islam is not a religion but what the artice above states it is 'one who surrenders or makes peace'. I am also coming to a conclusion that what is important in Islam is not our rituals but our intentions and commitments for the benefit of mankind to live in peace and prosperity. I may be corrected but this is my thoughts.

            Peace

Islam itself is not a religion, however religions have been made based on Islam.

How would you define the word religion?

According to the etymology of the term religion and comparing the root of Dal-ya-nun to find matches between the two.

                        Peace Wakas, all

I have 2 misconceptions about islam that can be added.

Misconception Prophet Muhammed knew about the future.

650 Say, "I do not say to you that I posses
God's treasures, nor do I know the
future, nor do I say to you that I am an
angel. I merely follow what is inspired to
me." Say, "Are the blind and the seer the
                        same? Do you not think?"

7188 Say, "I do not possess for myself any
benefit or harm, except what God wills.
If I could know the future, then I would
have increased my good fortune, and no
harm would have come to me. I am but a
warner and a bearer of good news to a
                        people who acknowledge."

8124 He has no knowledge of the future.

1131 "Nor do I say to you that I have the
treasures of God, nor do I know the
future, nor do I say that I am an angel,
nor do I say to those whom your eyes
look down upon that God will not
grant them any good. God is more
aware of what is in them; in such case I
                        would be among the wicked."

Only God knows about the future

7187 They ask you regarding the Hour When will be its time? Say Its knowledge is with my Lord, none can reveal its coming except He. It is heavy through the heavens and the earth; it will not come to you except suddenly. They ask you, as if you are responsible for it! Say Its knowledge is with God, but most of the people do not know.

3134 With God is the knowledge regarding the Hour. And He sends down the rain, and He knows what is inside the wombs. No soul knows what it may gain tomorrow, nor does any soul know in which land it will die. God is Knowledgeable, Expert.

3363 The people ask you regarding the Hour. Say Its knowledge is with God. And for all that you know the Hour may be near!

3179 God was not to leave the believers as they were without distinguishing the rotten from the good. And God was not to let you know the future, but God chooses from His messengers whom He wishes; so believe in God and His messengers. And if you believe and are righteous, then you will have a great recompense.

Misconception That a woman can not travel alone.

                        http//islamic-practices.suite101.com/article.cfm/women_cannot_go_to_hajj_without_a_mahram

As we know, no verses in the quran tell us that women can not travel alone, can only travel for 1 day without marham etc. Here are the verses in the quran that tells us that whoever wants can travel (whether male or female)

596 Lawful for you is the catch of the sea, to
eat it as enjoyment for you and for those
who travel; and forbidden for you is the
catch of the land as long as you are
under restriction; and be aware of God
to whom you will be summoned.

2184 A number of days. Whoever of you is ill
or traveling, then the same number from
different days; and as for those who can
do so but with difficulty, they may
redeem by feeding the needy. Whoever
does good voluntarily, it is better for
him. If you fast, it is better for you if you
                        knew.

4100 Whoever emigrates in the cause of God
will find in the land many spoils and a
                        bounty. Whoever leaves his home
emigrating to God and His messenger,
then is overcome by death; his reward
has fallen to God, and God is Forgiving,
                        Compassionate.

2218 Those who have acknowledged, and
those who have emigrated and strived in
the cause of God; these are seeking
                        God's compassion, and God is
                        Forgiving, Compassionate.

3195 Their Lord answered them "I do not
waste the work of any worker from
among you, be you male or female, you
are all as each other. For those who
                        emigrated and were driven-out from
their homes and were harmed in My
cause, and they fought and were killed, I
will remit for them their sins and admit
them to paradises with rivers flowing
beneath; a reward from God; and God
                        has the best reward."

Islam itself is not a religion, however religions have been made based on Islam.

Correct.. "Submission To God's Will" is not a sect or religion... "Submission To God's Will" is an ATTITUDE.
Not ALL sectarian movement / religions are based on "Submission To God's Will".
Infact most of them requires their sect members to be "Submission To Ulema/Priest/Cleric's Will".

However; you can find the "Submission To God's Will" is infact a basic teaching which being described in many books considered as "holy" by those sectarian movements. Such as Tanakh, Gospel, Bhagavad Githa, Tao Te Ching, Rig Veda, Sutras etc..

                            Salam / Peace

Adam is not a person. Adam is mankind. And the woman by the name Eve is not in the quran. Eve is taken from christianity and added to islam.

Misconceptions Jesus being crucified on a cross

Jesus died a natural death. From history people have come to the conclusion that he most likely died in kashmir. The crucifixion is also taken from christianity.
And it is unquranic (not compatible with islam).

                                Salam

Here are 7 more misconceptions about islam

Misconception 1 Meat of different animals are forbidden to eat

Only meat of Pig is illegal.

Misconception 2 The Quranic verses can be abrogated

This is not compatible with quran. It is not a fact.

Misconception 3 Intercession is accepted in islam

The belief in the Prophet's intercession comes from hadith http//www.sunnah.org/ibadaat/tawassul.htm
But this belief is not compatible with Quran (See 651, 2254, 2122-123, 324 and other verses).

Misconception 4 Fatwas are compatible with islam

Misconception 5 That you have to say Shahada to become a muslim.

This is not Quranic. The Quran tells us the following about those who say shahada

                                Quran 631
When the hypocrites come to you they say We bear witness that you are the messenger of God. And God knows that you are His messenger, and God bears witness that the hypocrites are liars.

                                This is the greatest testimony

                                Quran 619
Say Which is the greatest testimony? Say God is witness between me and you, and He has inspired to me this Quran that I may warn you with it and whoever it reaches, that you are bearing witness that with God are other gods! Say I do not bear witness! Say He is only One god, and I am innocent of what you have set up!

Misconception 6 Only the Imams and sheykhs can interpret the Quran

This belief contradicts the following verses in the Quran ( See 5417, 5422).

                                Misconception 7 Sects are islamic

Sects are not compatible with islam. Prophet Muhammed was not a Sunni or Shia. These are later innovations.
The Quran tells people to not split their systems and become sects (See 3032).

                                  peace David,

The site is primarily for "non-Muslims" as mentioned on this thread, but I will give some of those consideration. Some already have crossover to existing misconceptions.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

I like misconception 4. Many non-muslims assume that muslims have to follow fatwas and it is important to educate them on this.

                                          Salaam,

Misconception Men are domineering over women ? Or...?
Putting aside the 'DRB' portion of 434 for a moment..

Not sure If this is the right place for this but I'd like a convincing argument against this. Something no traditionalist/male chauvinist* would have an answer for.

*It seems such a view can be easily gathered by a certain way of reading AQ. It would be good to have a great counter argument against this.
