Asalaamu Alaikum brothers and sisters.. I prefer to go with Qur'an only thoughts when available, so would you mind giving me your thoughts on the Shahada?

Some say it is a form of Shirk to associate Muhammad with Allah, as this is not in the Qur'an.. some support it by Hadith, which we both do not take stock in.

If we did accept it and we are supposed to give equal respect to all prophets, that would make for a very long Shahada indeed.. lol.

Yes, I have read the article here on FM which deals with this yet I do not know precisely on this exact question.

I think, a Shahada which just had "There is no God but God" in arabic would be quite sufficient.. yet I do not wish to go on my own thoughts alone.

How is it Shirk to associate Muhammad with Allah?

Muhammad is the last and for all the worlds. No need to mention other prophet's names in Shahada.

These articles represent thoughts of particular sect.

Well that is sufficient that is our "Imaan" and it is not completed if do not say and PRACTICALLY show that we believe only in One Allah!

Muhammad is Rasul of Allah is the statement of fact; can any Muslim deny it? that Muhammad is Rasul of Allah? Now if he is Rasul of Allah and some one agrees with it, What is the problem there?
Why raising of eyebrows?, why frownings?
if you donot believe in any one of the Rasul's of Allah you are not obeying Allah PRACTICALLY as Quran tells us.

        Peace,
There is no command in the Quran to testify "verbally" some kind of "Shahada". It is what you believe on the inside that counts.

631 When the hypocrites come to you they say ?We bear witness that you are the messenger of God.? And God knows that you are His messenger, and God bears witness that the hypocrites are liars.

I personally don't see anything wrong with the shahada but I don't believe God said at all- "you are not a muslim unless you say muhammed is the last prophet", so I don't see the point in it really.

          Peace peace

            Assalaam Alaikum

            This is the Shahada.....

Behold! God took the covenant of the prophets, saying. "I give you a Book and Wisdom; then comes to you an Messenger, CONFIRMING what is with you; do you believe in him and render him help." God said. "Do you agree, and take this my Covenant as binding on you?" They said. "WE AGREE." He said. "Then bear witness / qala aaqrartum wa akhathtum AAala thalikum isree qaloo aqrarna qala faishhadoo , and I am with you among the witnesses."

aaqrartum (perfect, 2nd person) YOU promised, YOU confirmed

akhathtum(perfect verb 2nd person) YOU took

            Thats the Shahada

              Dear Rashidala

Below is an excerpt from my footnote for verse 318. It contains the pictures of two coins from Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties supporting the Quranic version of shahada

003018 The act of testifying to the oneness of God (shahada) is considered to be the essential requirement of being a Muslim. The expressions la ilaha illa Allah (there is no god, but the god) and la ilaha illa Hu (there is no god, but He) occur 30 times in the Quran and never in conjunction with another name. Trying a deficiency in the shahada taught by God is a sign of not valuing God as He should be valued. Requiring the addition of another name to God's name implies that God forgot to include Muhammad's name, thirty times (1964; 6115). Trying to teach God is the zenith of ignorance and audacity (4916). Considering God alone insufficient is the symptom of idolatry (3945).

The only shahada (testimony) about the messengership of Muhammad is mentioned in verse 631, and those who feel the need for such a testimony are described as hypocrites. There are different reasons for why a person might be considered a hypocrite while he or she is uttering the expression ashadu anna Muhammadan rasululullah (I testify that Muhammad is a messenger of God). Today, the most common hypocrisy is that those who utter this phrase in fact have considered Muhammad to be much more than a messenger, since they reject his message and messengership by not following the verses of the Quran and associating volumes of fabricated narration and sectarian jurisprudence with it. Their testimony regarding Muhammad's messengership is lip service, since they consider him a god by giving him the power of intercession, the power of collaborating with God in decreeing rules for eternal salvation, the power of amending and abrogating God's law, the power of fabricating prohibitions in the name of God, and the authority of explaining the "ambiguous" words in God's book. Despite the words of Muhammad's Lord, they do not consider Muhammad a human being like them (18110; 416). They do not believe what they say when they say "Muhammad is God's servant" since they consider the title "messenger/mailman" (rasul) of God to be an insult. They can utter God's name without phrases of praise, but they cannot utter Muhammad's name without words of praise. Ironically, they establish their custom of praising Muhammad more than God through distorted and abused meanings of certain verses. Besides, they violate the clear Quranic instruction for not discriminating among His messengers; they put Muhammad in competition with other messengers and consider him high above other prophets and messengers. In today's Sunni mosques, unlike the masjid of Muhammad's and his monotheist companions? (7218; 2014), you will find the names of many idols smirking beside the name of God. In addition to Muhammad's name, one may find the names of Abu Bakr, Omar, Osman, Ali, Hasan, and Husayn. The Shiites have their own set of idols and they too adorn their mosques with their names.

The list of ways Sunnis and Shiites idolize Muhammad can fill an entire book. Nevertheless, they think that they are monotheists, as today's Trinitarian Christians do. Religious leaders dupe their followers by restricting the meaning of ?idols? to pictures and statues; in fact, the idols during Muhammad's time were abstract names and those mushriks considered themselves to be monotheists (5319-28; 622-24; 6148; 1635). One might ask, "what about adorning the walls of masjids with any of the four verses where Muhammad's name is mentioned?" Well, what about hanging the verses about paradise or hell? What about picking any of the 136 verses where Moses' name is mentioned? What about Jesus? Or, how about adorning the walls of the masjids with verses about the hypocrites and idolatry? Of course, there is no problem in hanging the Quran upon the walls of masjids, but if a particular verse is picked, then the intention or context becomes important. If any verse from the Quran should be picked, I suggest 3944/45 or 3911- 12, or any other verse that reminds us to be righteous and helpful to other people. Also, See 2285; 364; 3945; 5323; 7218.

Numerous archeological evidences explain how decades after the revelation of the Quran people added Muhammad's name to the original shahada. For instance, see, the gold coin from Umayyad 90 AH, or 80 years after the prophet's departure. Though eighty years after Muhammad, those who worked hard to transform islam to Muhammadanism were not yet able to change the shahada (testimony), by adding side notes etc, they gradually replaced the correct Shahada with today's most common one, the one that mentions Muhammad's name after Allah.

In the middle of one side of the coin, the expression, "There is no God; He Alone; He has no partner" is prominent. However, the falsifiers by now were able to insert Muhammad's name in the margin by a patchy quotation from the end of verse 4828 and the beginning of 4829, skipping the expression "And God is sufficient as a witness." The expression "Muhammadun Rasulullah" (God's messenger Muhammad&#133 is a fragment, not a statement, taken out of the context of verse 4829. They have performed an interesting surgery (deletion) in order to be able to fit that fragment in the circle. The other side of the coin contains some words from chapter 112, emphasizing God's oneness and rejecting partners. The Umayyad and Abbasid coins later moved Muhammad's name to the center, next to God. This crucial distortion gradually took place in a period of time spanning several generations. See, for instance, the Old Testament, Deuteronomy 51-11; 64-6; 1 Samuel 1220-21; Psalms 1154-8.

              Peace,
              Edip

The mistake I guess we are making (in most of our discussions here) is our failure to tackle the problem of WHY before we jump into HOW!

What is the purpose/benefit/significance/reason for SHAHAADAH? This, I believe, will guide as to the form.

                    Peace,
                    Respectfully.

How did magicians accept Islam when prophet Moses showed them the signs? Did they say a specific shahada?
What about the queen Sheba when she submitted with Solomon? She didn't say there is no god but God and .... right?
Did prophet Muhammad say there is no god but God and i am His messenger, in order to become a Muslim?

Seek and you shall find. Matthew 77.
Pray to God for patience and more guidance, needless to say, you're guided right. Thank God.
You have already discovered that saying there is no god but God, is enough. You're thinking on your own which is a huge progress for any human being.

                    God bless you.
                    Peace.

i was doing shahada for god alone even before i fiound submission, i beleive that is the very reason why i found it because i was finally doing tshahada the righ way.
shahada the right way in my eyes and thought, is
ashhado an la ilaha ila allah wa7daho la sharika laho, this is what i was saying about 10 months before i discovered submission. l7amdulillah

Yes, indeed, the shadaha as widely practised, does seem to mention Mohammed along with God, and it really is widespread among sunni or shia, where Ali seems to be the name of choice.

                            From http//majesticislam.wordpress.com/2008/08/25/read-carefully/

"There is none worthy to be admired in this whole world, except our Beloved Prophet Muhammed (SA)."

This ofcourse goes againt all Quranic logic, about messengers being of equal status/rank, and also seems to exclude God! hmm.

imo, if one needs to SAY anything in order to enter enter something... to me it sounds like a sect,
islam is not a club you enter by saying some magic words

To become a Submitter (Muslim), you do not need to talk to anyone because it is a private affair between you and the Lord. However, to become a member of a Muslim community, the story is different. You have to announce your allegiance to Allah and to the leader of the community.

                                  Peace to all,

According to the Quran, Mohammed and all the believers were instructed to follow the "millat Ibraheem"/religion of Abraham, and that means all of our religious practices came through him... Do you think Abraham said, "Mohammed is the messenger of GOD"? Absolutely not, since Mohammed wasn't even alive during Abraham's lifetime. So, if Abraham was a muslim/submitter and we are following the religion of Abraham, then testifying to Mohammed's messengership is not a requirement of becoming a submitter to GOD.

                                  Peace,

                                  Ahmad

                                    Dear Rashidala

Below is an excerpt from my footnote for verse 318. It contains the pictures of two coins from Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties supporting the Quranic version of shahada

                                    Peace,

                                      As of today;
                                      Islam IS a sect..
Unless you say those 'magic words', then you're a kafirrun..
                                      Hell will be your abode..
As Heaven is preserved for those belongs to the Islam sect or often called themselves muslim...

If you're not a member of any sect; then obviously and most definitely you're a secular...
As "Secular" by definition IS NON-SECTARIAN / not belongs and/or embrace any specific religious sects..

And according to those who belongs to the Islam, Judaism, Christianism sect..
The secular people will burn in hell for eternity....

Do you dare to be 'secular' ??

Below is the Arabic break down for the Shahaada
