but when added to the shahadah its elevating one prophet only to a status on par with Allah so it does make him more than any other.

I know the exclusiveness to include in shahada is wrong. But then the question of ?what is shahada?? can come about. A testification? In my beliefs I can testify numerous things the core being la ilaha illa lah.
shahada is la illaha illallah, its not just the core.

A Muslim SHAHHADAH is to testify that "THERE IS NO god BUT ALLAAH", period. The sin that you are curious about, is the inclusion of the name of other than ALLAAH (swt) in the SHAHAADAH, in this case, the name of HIS prophet, i.e. Muhammad (pbuh). You are right, we all know that Muhammad was a messenger of ALLAAH (SWT), BUT, we must not include his name side by side and EQUALLY with the name of our LORD, i.e., ALLAAH (SWT), in the STATEMENT of our FIRST ARTICLE OF FAITH, SHAHAADAH.That is when the SIN of SHIRK comes in, and it is an UNFORGIVABLE sin. See 448 & 4116.
