:: Ramadhan Fasting or .....? ::
-
2185 A month of aspiration, in which the Qur?an was revealed; as a
guide to the people and clarities from the guidance and the
Criterion. Therefore, whoever of you witnesses the month, then
let him fast therein. And whoever is ill or traveling, then the same
number from different days. God wants to bring you ease and not
to bring you hardship; and so that you may complete the count,
and glorify God for what He has guided you, that you may be
thankful.I don't think God would prescribe something for us to do if it was going to be harmful at all.
I have only fasted 4 days out of this Ramadan because I have been dehydrated, but that is because I went into Ramadan dehydrated. That being said, I am hurting because of my own shortcoming, not because of anything Allah (swt) has prescribed.
But, that is just my observation. May God forgive me if I have said anything wrong.
With Peace,
Amina
Ask any docter if depriving your body for 19 hours of water is harming or not. He would most likely tell you that its not only harming, but DANGEROUS for your health.
Hence I dont think that God wanted us to abstain from water or food. At least not in this time.

I did, last year. I was told that as long as I was getting enough water in the morning and evenings, I would be just fine. Granted, our fast only lasts 16 hours, but the answer was still the same. As long as I was hydrating sometime within that 24 hours, it seemed to be okay with the doctor. As a matter of fact, they were more concerned with my low vitamin d levels more than they were my fasting for long periods.
Plus, think about the things we have today that they didn't have during the times of the Qu'ran Air conditioning, refrigeration systems, etc. Do they not provide more comfort than what the Prophet had?
Fasting is not easy at all, and I agree that it puts a strain on our bodies, but the Qu'ran clearly states that there is leniency in certain situations. If one fasts and finds it too difficult, then they can fast another time or pay the tax (if they fall into that situation).

Peace All,
Could someone who speaks arabic please tell me the possibilities of the root letters, N-S.
Thanks in advance.

really? from where did your docter got his degree from? because all the docters I have met strongly disagree with him. Last time in ramadan I fainted twice and my docter told me to stop fasting immidietly. So your docter obviously doesnt know what he is talking about, or maybe he just ment that you wont DIE as long as you got some water in the night time.
Evidence of hemoconcentration and dehydration has been found during Ramadan (El-Hazmi, Al-Faleh, & Al-Mofleh, 1987; Kayikcioglu et al., 1999; Ramadan et al., 1999; Schmahl & Metzler, 1991; Sweileh et al., 1992). Restricted fluid intake, leading to disturbance in the fluid balance, is likely to cause these conditions. In the initial stages of dehydration, the clinical signs are tachycardia, tiredness and malaise, headaches and nausea. Middle-aged or more elderly persons are usually more prone to the effects of dehydration (Schmahl & Metzler). .
Migraines are three times more common during Ramadan, affecting an estimated 90 million Muslims
http//www.webcitation.org/query?url=http//www.jpost.com/HealthAndSci-Tech/Health/Article.aspx?id=184112&date=2011-04-04The following study studied Turkish Muslims in Germany who were involved in heavy and manual work. 'Moderate to severe health disturbances' including severe dehydration were found in such laborers during Ramadan (Polish Journal of Occupational Medince 1991 43 219-28 )
The following study in Morocco found that irritability increased during Ramadan
Kadri N, Tilane A, El Batal M, Taltit Y, Tahiri SM, Moussaoui D
AbstractOBJECTIVES We hypothesized that people in Morocco are more irritable during the month of Ramadan than during the rest of the year. Our objectives were to measure irritability in fasting Muslims during the month of Ramadan, to describe its various modes of expression, and to examine risk factors for this irritability.
METHODS AND SUBJECTS We studied 100 healthy volunteers during the month of Ramadan for two successive years (1994 and 1995). All subjects were male (mean age, 32+/-5.8 years), and 51% of them were smokers. Irritability was assessed over a 6-week period (before, four times during, and after the end of Ramadan). We assessed both subjective (visual analog scale) and objective irritability. We also recorded the consumption of psychostimulants, duration of sleep, and anxiety level as measured by the Hamilton Anxiety Scale.
RESULTS Irritability was significantly higher in smokers than in nonsmokers before the beginning of Ramadan. It was higher in both groups during the Ramadan month. Irritability increased continuously during Ramadan and reached its peak at the end of the month. Consumption of psychostimulants (coffee and tea) and anxiety level followed the same pattern. Smokers and nonsmokers had a similar pattern of irritability over time, but irritability increased more in smokers than in nonsmokers
In a study done on the Arab world, experts claimed that increases in blood crimes (+1.5%) and theft (+3.5%) were observed during Ramadan (http//www.webcitation.org/query?url=http//www.dailystaregypt.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=3746&date=2011-07-12)
keeping in mind the above adverse affects of fasting observed in studies, what benefit does the Muslim world get for 1 billion people staying hungry throughout the day for one full month every year? Did Allah actually want Muslims to suffer physically, socially and economically for one month every year? Also, if fasting is beneficial as Muslims claim, why do Muslims not fast the entire year instead of just one month?
Plus, think about the things we have today that they didn't have during the times of the Qu'ran Air conditioning, refrigeration systems, etc. Do they not provide more comfort than what the Prophet had?
Lol. So you think everyone is sitting in the air conditioning 24 hours? And who says that the prophet fasted?
Fasting is not easy at all, and I agree that it puts a strain on our bodies, but the Qu'ran clearly states that there is leniency in certain situations. If one fasts and finds it too difficult, then they can fast another time or pay the tax (if they fall into that situation).
easy at all? i have just given you references showing how fasting increase crimes and damages the health and you say that God wants all this?

Sister it comes from the same root as nas (coming behind or late) which is similar to the root of People (NAS) . So my best guess is, that they are a particular group of people regardless of their gender.
Please take a look on other threads where this subject has been discussed for example http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=9602890.10 And http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=12037.20

Peace Maha.
I do not doubt all the studies you mentioned. Interesting articles and findings.
That apart , What do you think "Sawm" that GOD mentions in Koran is?
Does the findings depend on the" Sample"? Could a different "sample" provide the opposite findings?
Peace.

sorry to step in, just my two cents worth;
Its so easy - just look at the context of the ayah's where ever the word accurs , i mean see what is happening, what action is being played out and you are simply told to abstain from such .............and you are given a little more advice on what you should do to make matters better for you and others too, just side step for a while and recourse to advice from someone personally close to you.

So the question is, why would God deprive his followers for water 19 hours daily for a whole month during summer? And what would happen to a society where everyone was deprived of water on a daily basis during summertime?
Peace
God did that? Where in the Koran did God say to fast sunrise to sunset for 30 days straight?
-
I don't think God would prescribe something for us to do if it was going to be harmful at all.
absolutely! research/studies have shown the benefits of fasting (i am not talking muslim practice of fasting entire month). periodic fasting can reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes. this study was reported in the American Journal of Cardiology in 2008. mormons fast once a month and they have greater life span and 40% less clogged arteries.

i find this whole month to be unhealthy overall. consuming large amounts of food. been to iftar parties with so much food (and a lot is wasted). it is not just the food but the kind of food consumed during this month - high calorie, high fat, high sugar, and salt. how can this possibly be healthy?
and you have people entering this month of fasting without preparation. you can't go from drinking caffeine all day to suddenly going without it for a day. if you consume regular amounts of caffeine and go without just caffeine for a day, how do you feel? now if you go without caffeine, water and food - of course you can expect to be cranky. you can't go from eating large meals three times a day snacking in between to then fasting for an entire month without feeling sick. and then pigging out before sunrise and sunset? how many people actually drink 8 glasses of water in 24 period during this month? how many people in general have a healthy eating habits to start with consisting of whole grain, fruits/veggies, lean meats? and you wonder why people get sick/irritable during this month?? brickwall
God who created us knows what is best for us. Don't blame God if we don't use our brains.

Peace good logic. I am still researching on sawn and I will publish my results when I have finished . But I defintaely think that sawn is something different from the traditional understanding .

That's excately my point . I don't know anything about the Mormon fasting but there is a lot of evidences of how unhealthy the Muslim fasting is and it's negative impact on society . I always avoid travelling to Muslim countries during Ramadan because it's almost a hell to be there in Ramadan . When I was a sunni and used to fast all I could think about was Water water food food food and nothing else I couldn't concentrate on anything . I don't think god want us to suffer or ruin one entire month every year for his followers .

in times past, i used to avoid being around muslims in general. but not anymore. when people ask how my fasting is going, i ask them to refer me to the koran. and where does God say it is obligatory?
i get migraines and prone to hypoglycemic episodes which lead me to realize/appreciate life and God. and to follow the koran. it is simply detrimental to my overall health/well being to fast for an entire month. years ago i found myself lying on the floor questioning....ok, God is the one who created me and with these medical condition to know what would happen if i went without food/water for any length of time. why would he then make it obligatory for me to fast knowing what would happen, how that would not only impact my health but making it hard for me to work. how can i do my job thinking straight when i have a migraine or having an hypoglycemic episode? no, hypoglycemia won't kill you but it does have long term consequences possibly may lead to dementia. yet God says that he means ease and not hardship? it just didn't make sense.
the koran and God make sense. people don't. you want to listen to God and reap the benefits or you want to listen to people following innovations and suffer? i choose to listen to God. )

w/salaam bender,
Those quotes were directed at mmkhan, in case there was any confusion, however I will address your points.
Salaam bro,
Yes I know it was not for me, but I guess on a forum it's ok to hijack )
I included the option of "your theory is unprovable" that means neither true or false, i.e. unknown. Of course, the implicit implication is that the opposite view is not proven also. Not that I have attempted to prove it however. The burden of proof is upon the claimant...
Here is the difference, let me repeat, but perhaps in a clearer way
So, I simply asked, as per Quran, what is the difference between X and Y? MMkhan (and you) could not answer. Simple.
Thus, the statement of "No, it can't be used. There are no two words in AlQuraan giving a single meaning" is unproven, and is in need of correction.
That was my point.
Ok maybe it was better to start like this IF 2 words can't have the same meaning THEN...
Re 482
e.g. of contradiction
the earth was created in 6 days
the earth was created in 5 daysThat's very generous mistakes like that are imho even for human beings not done.
My method can be viewed here
http//www.quran434.com/study-method.htmlthank you I had already read it long time ago and I agree with most of it. I believe the "time" factor is one of the most important things we have to understand.
maybe it would be a nice idea if there was a thread where everyone could share his/her study methods.Salaam,

Thanks. It's in southern Europe . I just don't know where excately in southern Europe but somewhere in Spain, Portugal, Italy or greece) South Europe is an incredible nice place to visit you shall really make a travel there some day )

salaam bender,
I only listed one example of a contradiction, there are others, e.g.
rule X is given yet in examples of this rule being played out it is never adhered to with no explanation
.
emphasises do X, but elsewhere makes X virtually impossible to do
'
etc
etc -
salaam all
It gives me a great place to start from.
i am attaching an article for you all to ponder. i am 100% in agreement with how the writer has analyzed the saum.
i believe that the quran is not a book of rituals.hope this article will give a new line of thinking!
