Ramadan? 2007
-
Salam all,
I read all the posts I could so far from this darn cell I am using to access this site, so bear with me.But I'm confused. What is the consensus here at free-minds on Ramadan? I feel like everyone has there own opinion, and it doesn't make me feel secure in making my decision in what to believe for ramadan. For instance some here believe its for 30 days, and others believe for 10, can each of those people make a clear argument that's not too complicated for my feeble mind, so I can decide which it is I mainly believe? Also, some here believe ramadan will be 11 days earlier than the year before, while others believe it will be the hottest day of the year??? I am so confused!!! Arggg!
So, for me I would like to know what day I begin fasting in Oregon,USA, 2007?
Please all give your opinion as to when Ramadan begins, and for how long.
Thank you!

Peace all,
This has already been discussed in another thread

Salam sis,
To my understanding the fast is for 10 days (ayaam madoodaat).
The 10 days occur in the month of scortching heat (ramadhan)
The months begin with the full moon and are luni-solar (to keep in sync with the seasons)
The fast this year begins July 30th and lasts for 10 days.

Salam All and Tanveer,
Tanveer,
I already read your posts on ramadan as well as many others, and found that I was overwhelmed by the complexity of everyones argument for their opinion, hence why I asked for it in simple lamen terms. My health is not that well at the moment, I have very little energy to mull over pages upon pages of arguments on this. Please anyone give me a straightforward lamen answer. Example I believe Ramadan is 10 days for these such reasons; etc. Example I believe Ramadan starts 11 days prior to the last years date for these such reasons etc.
Can someone maybe take Tanveers, and maybe another opposing persons view and maked it into a bulleted summary so I can read it like a 10 year old could?!
Thank you!

Peace Honor,
I know that it's so frustrated when people can not stick to the same especially when it's such an important issue. Although I couldn't stop laugh at your comment about you need a summary for a 10 year old
I have come to the conclusions that it's 10 days we fast and it's the scorcing heat.
It also feels more logic and sound that it's 10 days of fasting because longer than that make it complicated and many will not be able to fast longer.
When I was a sunni, I guess I never fasted a whole month.
Peace

I did some research about Ramadan and will try and explain it simply. The verse I looked at is 2185
As to the month Ramadhan in which the Koran was sent down to be man's guidance, and an explanation of that guidance, and of that illumination, as soon as any one of you observeth the moon, let him set about the fast; but he who is sick, or upon a journey, shall fast a like number of other days. God wisheth you ease, but wisheth not your discomfort, and that you fulfil the number of days, and that you glorify God for his guidance, and that you be thankful.I basically looked through an Arabic Quran and the word used for month and moon (the ones I bolded are both the same word!).
Alot of people on this forum have decided that the word mean Moon. Also Ramadan means Scorching heat. So if you go by that interpretation you use http//www.timeanddate.com/calendar/moonphases.html and whatever month is hottest in your location, look for the first Full moon that occurs (The ones given on that table).
I hope this helps and I didn't make any mistakes.

If we ask a 10 year old what the term "scorching full-moon" evokes, he or she will naturally say that it evokes the meaning of the full moon, heat and reddish color.
The hottest time of the year occurs after the summer solstice. This is true independent of what humans decide to do or not do with their calendars.
When the sun is at its highest point, the moon is at its lowest point. So the moon close to the summer solstice will be the lowest moon of the year. When the moon is low it takes a reddish color and it seems larger to observers. This is true independent of what humans decide to do or not do with their calendars.
So no matter what humans do or not do, the "scorching full-moon" (the full moon that is reddish and occurs during the hottest time of the year) will always be the first full moon after the summer solstice. Everywhere in the northern hemisphere, this full-moon occurred tonight. So fasting starts on the dawn of July 1, 2007 (tomorrow).
I hope this helps.
Peace,
Ayman

It is made lawful for you to go in unto your wives on the night of the fast. They are raiment for you and ye are raiment for them. Allah is Aware that ye were deceiving yourselves in this respect and He hath turned in mercy toward you and relieved you. So hold intercourse with them and seek that which Allah hath ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white thread becometh distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn. Then strictly observe the fast till nightfall and touch them not, but be at your devotions in the mosques. These are the limits imposed by Allah, so approach them not. Thus Allah expoundeth His revelation to mankind that they may ward off (evil).Yusuf Ali
Permitted to you, on the night of the fasts, is the approach to your wives. They are your garments and ye are their garments. God knoweth what ye used to do secretly among yourselves; but He turned to you and forgave you; so now associate with them, and seek what God Hath ordained for you, and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast Till the night appears; but do not associate with your wives while ye are in retreat in the mosques. Those are Limits (set by) God Approach not nigh thereto. Thus doth God make clear His Signs to men that they may learn self-restraint.So basically when it is night time you can eat. I believe Esha time.

Salam,
I have the fast begining on July 30th. So, I guess we are different in our calculations by 1 lunar month.
will you please elucidate on how you come about your one month difference
does nigeria fall in the northern hemisphere
when will the full moon appear in july 30th in nigeria -
Peace everyone,
Just a few points.
- The dates for fasting
Layth, please explain how you are getting July 30.
The summer solstice occurred on June 21.
The first full-moon after the solstice occurred on June 30th. Please see http//aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html
So July 1st should be the first day of fasting.
- The breaking of the fast
The fast should be completed to the night. In the great reading "night" starts at sunset ("maghrib" NOT "the time of full darkness of the night" ("ghasak al-layl/ishaa".
Sister Honor, thank you for starting this thread. I love the way you worded your question. The great reading is clear and indeed a 10 year old should be able to easily understand it. I would even say that a 10 year old who has not been brain washed yet by sectarian dogma has a better chance of understanding the message of the great reading.
I hope this helps.
Peace,
Ayman

You are correct, the 1st full moon after the summer solistice occured on July 1st. However, that is not the only month that can be termed
scortching heatas the months of August and even September are alsoscorching(in-fact, August is typically the hottest month, mnoreso than July). With regards to the 1 month difference you and I have, it is because I take the 4 Restricted Months to preceed the month of Ramadhan. Therefore, the new year for me would begin the first full moon immedietly on or after the spring equinox (on or around March 21), making Ramadhan the 4th month in the calander, thus it would occur this year on July 30th.
