Peace, respectfully. Sunnis in the Bosnia are different then sunnis in the Mid-East and the rest of the world. Since my parents come from Bosnia, i understand the mentality of sunnis in the Balcans, in Bosnia. They are not violent and the war they lost between 1992 and 1995 is the proof. I'm sure that if i went there to discuss with them why sunna and hadeeth are not part of Islam, they would talk to me in a normal manner and just reject my belief because they are nice people, too friendly with the enemy (Serbs, Croats) and they just need to pray to God AllPowerful to guide them and give them more strength and more wisdom. May Allah, The Most JUST have mercy on all of us, especially Bosnian women who were raped in front of their mothers. They suffered the most while US government just stood there and did nothing. Clinton did defend the sunnis but not as hard as one would hope and expect. Peace.

Arabic is my mother language and that's why I'm hoping to be of help to those who may not have found an answer yet. The literal meaning of the word yuthkhin (root th-kh-n) is to intensify, solidify, strengthen, or thicken. The word also means to beat, defeat or overcome. Verse says "Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them (athkhantumuhum), then making fast of bonds." - Pickthall The meaning of the word 'athkhantumuhum' here is to route and defeat which requires to be the stronger party. This is the meaning provided in both Pickthall translation and the Arabic dictionary. It also has the same meaning in other translation Yusuf Ali to subdue Shakir to overcome Dr Ghali to subjugate, and he adds a note saying (Wrongly understood by Arberry and others to mean "slaughter&quot Now lets get back to the verse in question. It says "It is not for any prophet to have captives until 'yuthkina' in the land." The Arabic dictionary explains it in this context by giving two meanings. One is to slaughter, and the other to subdue the land after a battle. And if we look at different translations we see Pickthall to make slaughter in the land Yusuf Ali to subdue the land Shakir to fight and triumph Dr Ghali to subjugate the enemy in the earth Taking the second meaning, which is the same meaning of the word when it occurs in verse it becomes "It is not for any prophet to have captives until he has subdued/triumphed in the land." Which makes sense. You win the battle and take captives. As for the fear of backlash from Muslims, I think many Muslims in the Middle East especially in prosperous countries such as the Gulf States are open minded enough to welcome very sensitive debates like the Hadith issue. In my opinion they just have not thought about it as a good topic.

'Is Islamic History to Blame for Muslims 'Violent Mentality'? I think most if not all human history is violent. Christian, American, Indonesian, Chinese history it's all violent. Ancient human history is violent too Aztecs, Romans, its full of many wars, suffering, slavery, blood and gore. What does our human history really say about mankind? Regardless of faith, we are violent creatures. It is also not confined to a specific people and their history, like you seem to be suggesting. Atrocities are committed now and in recent history regardless of how advanced or civilized humanity has become, under many different banners and notions such as Imperialism, Maoism but still all pretty violent. I've lived in Bosnia, seen Srebrenica. You want to see how violent people are, visit these places where men have killed each other just because they were different, the wrong ethnicity or religion. Visit 9/11 towers, visit Rwandan, Cambodian killing fields. They are all a striking reminder and portrait of mankind, irrespective of beliefs.
