Salaams Feshari, I thank you very much for venting out some the steam. Your situation is not good and my heart is with you but you know what, I think that the solution is in your hand and within your budget too but will you follow through? Can you forget all about religion, what you believe in and what others believe in and just focus on your physical self? Can you join a health club or do a sport that would take all your energy so that you won?t have any left to waste on others? Others can be hell, absolutely. I can describe the situation here, in the Middles East around me, as such! But where can I go? How can I escape? No escape that is my fate! And that is why I keep myself really busy from others because they almost kill me with what they do and say, etc?And when I really have to be with them, I would pretend like I am enjoying every second! This pretending is hard work but being with them teaches me things which then balances out the accumulating stress from such gatherings. And I would reassure myself that these gatherings do not happen every day, thankfully. If you believe that what people do or say has nothing to do with you, you will surely feel much better. The Quran was not intended to make those who believe in it feel miserable. You are in charge of your feelings, not others. What your Mom believes is her personal choice and not only should you not argue with her rather you should support her in her choice and understanding. You don?t want to maximize the friction between you and others, especially your Mom.

However, what are some of you guys doing in regards to "being a Muslim"...particularly respective to fighting for basic human and environmental rights? peace, i've been writing letters to quite a few politicians regarding oil drilling in pristine areas of Alaska, also against logging in the northwestern US old-growth forests, i've been planting trees, composting, recycling, gave up eating meat, helping to care for an elderly person, handed out literature, joined the Green Party. hmmm, can one be a hippie and a muslim?

Peace Esimsek, See I can't agree with this. Mathematics has no beginning or end. 1+1 will always equal 2. Whether in this realm or another 1 with another 1 makes two parts. I think what we're dealing with is not the constitution of mathematics, but the constitution of perception. You told me a few posts back to think outside the box. I suggest the same. You have to understand that without time and space, mathematics has nothing to calculate. Math is locked into this reality. But time and space are temporary. What will math measure when there is no time and space? Think about that for a moment. What can you say exists irrespective of time and space? I can think of a few things Love Imagination Compassion Ambition Beauty Now tell me, can math measure any of the above? Probably the problem is (when arguing such a topic) is that space and time are by products of the Big bang, and therefore do not exist outside of this universe. Exactly! Now just make the connection between math and time and space and you'll see what I am saying. Math has no other purpose. It is a tool for us to understand time and space. Salam I do not think that one is expected to blindly accept others interpretation of the appropriate way to practice the teachings of Islam. Or that one would be expected, in their infancy stages of learning, to following all of the rules from the very beginning. It would be like expecting a child to run before they can crawl. I believe that Islam is a journey in developing a closeness with God and that one must first understand in order to effectively practice. I agree here absolutely with Searching 4 God. Fortunately I found my way to God and Islam, which is firm and solid. Thanks to God and this Site I stopped floating around between the traditionalists with their perception of a too strict haram/halal Islam, which confused me and removed me again from my path, and the disbelievers who don't care about God and the Islam. Islam means to me a deep respect and gratefulness to our Creator, which I express in my daily prayers (let it be contact prayers as well as Du'as). Being good and respectful to people AND animals and the nature, the creation of God. Being aware of what is happening around me and try to make this world a better place in being absolvent and teaching my kids this values. I read the Quran and try to understand it. I try to uphold Gods commands. Although I don't agree with everything, this Site helps me lot in my efforts. This is why it is so worthy to me and I find the members of FM in their efforts to understand the dunja very sympathetic. My faith means my backbone for which I am very thankful that I can feel it. On the other hand I'm not at all a missionary, I don't see my salvation in talking endlessly about my faith to disbelievers. I still have a lot to learn and sometimes I even think that my little head is just too small to understand all of it. Then I just leave it - hoping that I will understand another time or accepting that there are thousands of things I am just unable to understand. Peace. There is a distinction between things that with logic everyone can understand, but not those like Ansar. That difference is the distinction between respect and idolatry. We must should respect the message, becuase thats what God gave us, he didn't give us paper with ink on it, if it was like that then he would have just thrown down a book. Doing all this kissy kissy stuff is just out of the question, the book is not going to get anything out of it, no? Even though the Quran is God's word, it can still be set up as an idol besides him, like those who hang up arabic in their homes thinking it'll protect the home so they don't have to insure it... I give the book just as much respect as I would a phone directory, use it for information, but it in a decent place away from dirt and everything, but I wouldn't go around kissing it and not turning my back to it, that kind of restriction is just not logical. Actually, Ive received a death threat before as I am sure some of you have...at my college there was a harcore Taliban Sympathizer who gave me lots of problems...After I informed a friend of his that the revered narrator of Hadith Mr. Abu Hurayra was in fact accused of being a liar by Aesha and Omar Al Khattab according to well known sunni history books, he informed me that if his cousin were there to hear me utter such a blasphemy he would have killed me on the spot with no regrets!! What a sad world we live in...the vast majority of sunnis though, manage to develop a schitzophrenic personality where they believe and disbelieve in this nonsense at the same time. Peace, Also, Layth, maybe you havent noticed, but if somebody tries to enter the forum from free-minds.org from ANY other page on the website other than the index/main page, then you actually enter another forum!! I think it is the previous progressive Muslims forum which seems to be completely abandoned...I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me at first and I had problems signing in.. Sometimes I would go in one forum and at other times in the other, and I would notice how there seemed to be far less posts than I previously noticed, thinking I was accessing the same forum the whole time... Also, I was shocked to find out that there are some porn ? links to some ppl's personal websites under the other forum. I pm'd you about that but I guess since it is practically abandoned you did not get it. Peace. Apologies for taking so long to get back, I?ve been getting jammed up in another debate. When I said ?permission to lie in kindness? perhaps I didn?t word it properly, what I was basically trying to say was that, for example, we lie when we tell someone a joke, but God knows that we don?t mean it really. So in effect we are lying but not with the intention of lying, this is totally different to lying to go against or cover up the truth. To be honest I have realised that throughout the time we have been debating here, we?ve been wasting our energy, when there are more important things to discuss, like understanding the concept of ?Sollaa?. I think the best thing we can do is make sure we don?t fall into idol worship, whatever our opinions are, that?s the most important thing. Salamun Alaikum, I have been reading you guys' responses and I just wanted to take time to thank you all for your advice and experiences. Many of your suggestions are already part of my reality. As a matter of fact, the very idea of leaving the country came from a couple of family members and friends. Their perspective " If you are so concerned about every aspect of this society to the point where you can't even do or buy the things that most Americans do, then why don't you leave?" They basically think that this behavior is paranoia and/or borderline insane, and, for a moment in time, I considered their perspective.
