I think that if you join up with the sects you will never find what you are looking for. And they are satisfied with what they have and they do not seek to learn anything new because they think they are right. I do not have a background like yours but I am from a rather atheist family and I came to faith only through my own struggle and wish for a change/improvement as well as help from God of course.
I had faith in The Creator far earlier than I begun to explore the various sects (I call them sects these days, even so-called Islam, for none of them really follow the faith of God) and it was somewhere around my last years of the teens that I accepted that there was a "supernatural" cause for the existence of the universe as we know it, but I was not a monotheist due to ignorance until I received a punishment when I was 22 years old as I had begun to think I was with supernatural powers myself (due to a special gift I have from God secret). After that I recovered slowly over years, and I nearly subconsciously begun to read the Bible, and I understood why Jesus was like he was, although I refused to believe that Jesus was a son of God which may have blessed me continually as the story does not add up about Jesus alleged divinity, particularly because he himself said
10 At this, Jesus said to him, "Get away, Satan! It is written 'The Lord, your God, shall
you worship and him alone shall you serve.'"
I still believed that the narrations were true, but inside of me knew that something was not right there.
My view of the 'historic' Jesus is very close to the Islamic view of Issa
Properly translated I find that the "Islamic" view of him is quite identical both in the Gospel testimonies and the book called Qur'an. Check
66 As a result of this, many (of) his disciples returned to their former way of life and no

67 Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?"

Compare that with this extract from Qur'an
352 So when Jesus felt their rejection, he said ?Who are my supporters to God?? The disciples said ?We are the supporters of God, we believe in God and we bear witness that we have submitted.?
353 ?Our Lord, we believe in what You have sent down, and followed the messenger, so record us with those who bear witness.?
354 And they schemed and God schemed, but God is the best schemer.
And this is from the worst idolatrous Gospel version of them "John". However, I am sure the idolatry is due to errors in interpretation from the original. Jesus is talking about something other than we think.
Red And the person in this passage is , i.e. Isa which can quite well testify that Isa and Jesus are the same person.
Green The scholars and religious elite tried hard to find a way against Jesus, but Jesus through God always had something that prevented them from getting to him until as God had already planned that Jesus was to be taken away from there. And they were fooled into thinking that they had killed him.
Besides Jesus often talked in allegories not to be taken literally. To be able to fathom God Jesus knew that you have to explain in an allegorical way or it is not comprehensible. Check this example
5 Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God
without being born of water and Spirit.
6 What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit.
7 Do not be amazed that I told you, 'You must be born from above.'
Jesus did not literally mean that you need to be son of God to be able to enter the kingdom but rather saying that try to separate your flesh (Earthly perception) and your mind (which is distinct from it). They were told not to be amazed over this but rather think about it. Our soul/mind needs to take prevalence over our physical body's Earthly desires and weaknesses.
And Jesus is also called son of Mary according to the Bible
16 Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is
called the Messiah.
3 Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and
Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at
him.
4172 The Messiah is not too proud to be a servant to God, nor are the angels who are close to Him. Whoever is too proud from His service, and is arrogant, then He will gather them all towards Him together.

This is actually true in ways. But forget the son there. We are supposed to become whole with God like in unity, and there is no mediator. This is why Jesus always said and is not translated (because the translators probably did not know what it means) AMEN AMEN I say to you which means he said like "BE WHOLE BE WHOLE" I say to you.
There was so much talk from Jesus about me and God that people misunderstood that he meant that he was the third of a trinity, while in fact Jesus was talking about becoming one with God and not three or two (duality). He even clarified, but people still came to associate him in part of a trinity and that he was a son of God. And he talked about separating your ethereal mind from your body but people did not comprehend this.
Although I'm something of a newbie to Islam, it is nice to meet you all, I hope to learn a lot and hopefully contribute good things too!
I hope you will become more knowledgeable and whole. But you can tone down on the talk about Islam and that you explore Islam because you already know the faith, rather talk that you seek to purify yourself and unlearn the bad of what you have learned.

You can keep pretty much of what you know of "Christianity" and just discard the notion of Jesus as the son of a god and some of Paul's ramblings in the New Testament. Then you already know the decree of God and what your Master has commanded.

Absolutely. Just do not forget that the "Islam" without the hadith is also distorted through the ancient Arabic text being misinterpreted.
