Even if this hypothesis had any truth to it, it doesn't fit the context of most salat verses. It's a nice thought, but it's so watered-down and not very deep in meaning in the context of actual verses. Are we commanded to be peaceful to other people, even if we disagree with them? Yes. Are we commanded not to be suspicious of others and think the worst out of them? Yes. Are we commanded not to talk behind other's backs? Yes. These are all tenents already found in the quran. Salaam, The word used in 20130, I believe, is "sabbih" (Siin-Ba-Ha) instead of "Salat" (Saad-Lam-Waw) or "du'a" (Dal-'Ayn-Waw). Well, so far in my reading, I don't believe The God is using words haphazardly. I take "sabbih" as a part of, but not limited to, the activity of salat. In doing my salat, glorification will always be a part of it, especially when I learn new stuffs from the quran. I would definitely glorify The God, and not to forget expressing my gratitude. This particular ayat, as I now understand it, is the end-result of salat where the doer of this activity appreciates what he/she has learned during the "study session" and thus, logically, he/she should glorify The God for giving them the privilege of increased understanding. =adley=

Peace be upon you, Yes, we are dealing with "purifying", but it falls more under the effect of "zakaat" rather than the cause of "salaat". Salaat is the programming of your NAFS(subconscious/spirit) with the correct behavior which is the purifying(zakaat) we are seeking. It is likened to the weeding of your garden to get rid of weeds so you can have pure soil to plant good fruit.

Peace be upon you S2S, After reading your analysis through, I must say it makes alot of sense. What convinced me was your equating the nafs to the subconscious. This indeed proves that others can corrupt the nafs and that we should guard against those who feed our subconscious with subliminal messages. Yes, the nafs is the subconcious. The confusion of many people are all these words "spirit, soul, mind, subconcious" all being used haphazardly, and it confuses our thinking. We have to bring these concepts home to real life everyday experience. While I do agree with you, as I was researching, I came across this aya Those who keep aloof from the great sins and the indecencies but the passing idea; surely your Lord is liberal in forgiving. He knows you best when He brings you forth from the earth and when you are embryos in the wombs of your mothers; therefore do not attribute purity to your souls; He knows him best who guards (against evil). I'm interested to know what your analysis would be of this aya. Does this mean no nafs (subconscious) can ever be completely purified no matter how strongly we guard against it? Or did I read too much into it? I appreciate your thoughts I understand this verse to imply that none of us should act as if we are perfect, because none is perfect. I understand it to say that we must ALWAYS be on guard in regards to our nafs/subconcious. Just as a gardner/farmer must always tend the garden/farm. So I agree with your assessment that no nafs can be 100% purified, or if so, not for an extended time because "weeds" will always try to come back, or to use the computer analogy, hackers will always try to send you a virus. When we think we are perfect, that SUBCONCIOUSLY stops us from trying to continue purifying ourselves. Just like when the people say in this reading(quran), "Our hearts our wrapped", meaning they ae stuck in thier ways and SUBCONCIOUSLY stop looking for the better understanding.

NINTH Finally we come to the issue of how many Raka to be observed in each Salat. The cycle of standing, bowing and prostrating while praising and glorifying God is traditionally called a Raka. According to the Quranic law, God did not specify any specific number of Raka to be observed in the Salat, thus it is left to the individual. The advocates of the 5 prayers claim that the number of Raka to be observed during each of the 5 prayers is 24434 respectively. To start, and since there are only three Salat decreed by God for the believers, then this 5-prayer format is false. Where it came from? Probably like all the corruption we inherited in our rituals, they all have routes in the books of hadith (Bukhari, Muslim and others). The advocates of the 5 prayer format have worked out some calculations based on the Quranic code 19 to claim that this 24434 format has been preserved since Abraham. These calculations have been proved non significant and cannot be considered in any way as divine signs. Some other scholars have claimed that the minimum number of Raka during any prayer must be two. They base their claim on the concession to shorten the Salat at times of war (4101). They state that if we are given indication to shorten the Salat, then it must be at least two Raka, that is because it is not feasible to shorten the Salat if it were made of just one Raka! The error in this interpretation is that it is based on the number of Raka and not on the time consumed in our Salat. Since the Quran speaks of standing, bowing and prostration without any time or frequency restrictions, then we may spend the time we wish in any of these positions. In other words, one can spend one minute in the standing position or ten minutes. One could read the Al-Fatiha (The Key) once or ten times. Equally one may praise God during prostration three times or 20 times. One could prostrate once or five times .... etc. If we add the fact that different people excercise different speeds in uttering their prayers, then we are once again compelled to accept that shortening the salat is related to the overall time we give to the Salat and not to the number of Raka. For example, one Raka could be completed in 2 minutes or 20 minutes. The concession to shorten the Salat given in 4101 is thus a time related one. God is telling us if you normally spend (as an example) 10 minutes in your Salat, you may spend 2 or 3 minutes when you are at war. It is more logical to think that at times of war when we are in danger of the enemy, that we minimize the TIME we are at risk rather than minimize the number of Raka. After all, the concept of Raka is a relative one as shown, and one Raka can be conducted by two different people in totally different times, thus person A may do 3 raka's in the same time that person B has done 5 or 6. But if we accept that the concession in 4101 to be TIME related then the shortening of the Salat would affect all believers symmetrically. Moreover, this interpretation, which is TIME related, is more logical since it is not based on assumptions that do not exist in the Quran ..... The assumption of a minimum number of Raka is not in the Quran, plus ofcourse, the whole concept of a Raka (made of one standing, one bowing and the traditional two prostrations) is not in the Quran. The Quran speaks of the 3 positions in a specific order but there are no restrictions on the frequency of each. The majority of Muslims prostrate twice in every Raka. The Quran does not specify once or twice or more, hence who is to say that one who prostrates five or six times is in violation of any Quranic command? As salamu alaykum. jedi

peace I definitely agree they are all 3. I can say from experience reading the Quran before physical prayer helps me a lot. Helps me feel more peaceful and cleansed. As salamu alaykum. Respectfully. Salaams My Br, Its just that i hate to hurt anybody whether they are muslim , hindu , jew,star worshippers - as long as they don't harm others and don't abuse the rights of others they may do what ever they do. But i feel sorry for certain people and to be Honest no offence meant , I do consider a normal Salaat Idolatory and even the three Salaat idolatory but that is my opinion according to my studies of the quran. But if i call something an orange you call that an apple fare enough - it may just be our understandings. I am not here to change anybody but just sometimes put forward an opinion - it may be a blessing to some - as i see but load of nonsense to some aswell maybe. God Bless you and thanks for the help.

Arabic. Firstly, that the feminine form of the word ka'bun (12) carries the same meanings as the masculine form. In the case where it carries distinct meanings it is because it has been feminized to differentiate a very similar concept from some already established concept associated with the masculine form of the word. In addition to that, if you make the masculine form of a word feminine it gives strength to this word. For instance, 'Khaleefatun' is stronger than 'khaleefun', 'abbatee' stronger than 'abbee', and 'aarifatun,' stronger than 'aarifun.' (13) The meanings of Ka'bun listed in Wehr's dictionary (14) are the following Knot, knob, node (of cane); joint, articulation, ankles, anklebone; heel (of foot or shoe) ferule; die; cube; high rank, fame, glory, honor. Everything that the male of the form fa'lun (being the representation of the Cl. Arabic form in question, universally applied to all roots) can mean, so can the female (fa'latun or modernly and colloquially fa'lah), with the added meaning of emphasis that the feminization of the word gives; where it is clear that there could be intensification. The meaning that the dictionary gives for Ka'bah, as with Ka'bun, includes 'cube.' So then why cannot Ka'bah also share the meanings of high rank, glory and honor, taking into account the possible intensification it can mean? This would render it truly high rank, true/great glory and true/great honor. The author proposes that these meanings are the meanings that are meant in the Koran by Ka'bah. This word happens to also mean a cubic structure. But who's to say that this cubic structure is the famous one in the Hijaz area of Arabia, in a city popularly known as Mecca/Makkah? Why not some other cubic structure in another area of Arabia, or the world for that matter? The Koran doesn't say anything about any cubic structure being in any Arabia or in any city called Mecca/Makkah. From reading the Koran we have no reason to believe that we should even be visiting the city of Mecca, Arabia other than in visiting some holy sanctuary, being a house of God if we can travel that distance. Otherwise the Koran does not speak of any Mecca/Makkah in regard to any pilgrimage. Nor has the Cl. Arabic meaning of Makkah (1, Notes) even been looked at as what the Koran may really mean when it uses this word. With the above in mind, the author proposes that 594's 'hadyan baalighul-ka'bati' means " A present that is truly honorable." (15) It is also proposed here that 597's 'Ja'alallaahul-ka'bata albaital-haraama qiyaaman linaasi washah-ral haraama wal-hadya wal-qalaa'ida' means 'God has put in true honor and glory the holy houses, as upstanding things for the benefit of people. As well as the holy months with directions, including the awarding of people with marks of honor." (16) As far as qiblah it means a focal-point or a 'center'. And what is commonly translated as 'turn your face towards' in Cl. Arabic can mean 'Head towards'. The Quran also uses the word qiblah where Moses is told to tell his people to make their houses their qiblahs. Showing that it has nothing to do with praying in a certain direction and has everything to do with patronizing our communal centers, God's houses, i.e. the sanctuaries. Godbless, Anwar

peace Phil, Please refer to the Arabic or the transliteration and note the "...tum/hum/kum" usage. For example Wa-itha (and if) darabtum (you separate/travel) This is referring to a specific people mentioned in context, after which it introduces the kafireen, but never refers to them with "...tum/kum/hum" etc. Even after kafireen are introduced it still uses "lakum (to you)" for example, to refer back to the people being referenced in the context. peace Actually this is a prophecy That Muhammad's people would stray from his message.... He says this on the Day of Judgement. Though the 'losing the salat' is part of them deserting the message. In my view he says this when God tells him (on the day of judgement) how his people went stray.
