first of all let us agree on what a shaher is , yes every one tell you it is a month ,well it is not . all we know is that a shaher is present twelve times in a year. and it is both lunar and solar.very well. ok the prophet was told to tell us in the quran about the ahillat ,we need to use them so we know time of haj.good so what is a shaher. it is the ahillat,but hey wait a minute am i saying that a month is from one ahillah to another.like maybe 26 days no not at all. a ahillat is the combination of the hillals that is between or around five days. when the moon dies and there are those nights with out the moon then the moon is born again.those nights are what we call a shaher.yes those nights with out a moon. yes that is a shaher and i will show you why. is is like only about five days. and we have twelve of them in one year.so that we know the years. good so it starts with the deiing of the moon to the birth of a new one,now why did allah tell us in the verse in the quran that we should come the homes from the door and not from the back,for if we count the ahiilat from the birth of a new moon then one shaher would be like 26 days but if come from the door of the shaher it will be like only five days. strange what makes me say that,ok give one more minute.see about ashhur el haram,what could there be that we know them. bare with me ,so now we know that a shaher is not the moon cycle,but the cycle of the ahillat.great,so how do we know ashhur al haram,we know from quran they are four.in one year four of those shahers have less nights then the ussuall ashhur.yes it is strange they are the shahers that come after the shaher of ramadan.and i will tell you how we know it is ramadan ,give me another minute. onlythose ashhur all haram are seperate from eachother they like have two ashhur between them that are regular ashhur.in ahshur all haram their nights are only four and the rest of the ashhur have five nights. so ashhur all haram are about four days long each and they are four.they come in pairs,this is what the test shows and often they are devided by a pair of regular shahers not months dont make the mistake of thinking a shaher is month. it is a shaher ,the days and nights where one cannot see the mooon between the ahillat. then we need to know when is ramadan.for it is true that the ashhur all haram start after the shaher of ramadan and that is what i have noticed.so know how do we know that ramadan has started. or it is the coming shaher . the quran tells us that the shaher of ramadan is a shaher of bayinat that we will be signaled with many signs to know it is it. so let us see,since it is only a five night and day shaher as all the other regular shahers then it must be evident during the days that come before it that will give us all those signs.that it will be clear that this month is different. so let us see together what are those signs. 1-the rain will start to fall again after a long summer.ramadan 2 change of season. 3-plants beggin to grow again. 4-the days stop form getting bigger and they start to get smaller. 5-one big moon in the sky and i mean really big. the biggest you can find all year round.the collor is different too. 6-the sun is different during sun set even after it sets those collors are differnt and the sun have a round shape we can see,with out hurting our eyes.it is also the biggest sun we can ever see. 7- all this in a few days likesome twenty days.or twenty six and can be found together with in that time frame. 6-some call the moon the harvest moon for the fulll moon during that time is full of light,and one can see very clearly. so we get all those signs and then we know that the time this time when the moon is not there any more for those comming few days it is called the shaher of ramadan.yes five days we are ordered to fast those days without a moon. during those days is lalayet al qadr.remmember when the quran says,(wa kan kaba qawsayne aw adna)yes between those too cresents when there is no moon to light the night,and there is only darkness it is the shaher. the thing about those ashhur el hurum and ramadan well they dont change seasons,yes mostly ramadan is in september or october,and the hurum ashhur basically come,in march april and october december. but do the experiments your selfs dont take my word for it. inshaalah allah will lead us with the quran and nothing else,every thing else is shurk and will result in many ikhtilaf. brother please forgive me if i have mistaken or mislead you in any way. Peace everyone, I am totally confounded to where this came from. My friend said there is some random night known only to God that is somewhere between the 20th of Ramadan (per Islamic Calender) and the 22nd. On this night if you wake up around 1 am to pray and read Quran continuously until 5 am then God will forgive all your sins for the past year and the next coming year. What the..? Please has anyone heard this? confused I've heard about this too. It kinda comes from "The night of destiny is better than one thousand months" verse. So they say by staying up on this night and doing good deeds and reading the Quran, these deeds will be worth a lot more than if they're done on any other day. Dunno!

As-Salamu Alaikum my brothers! Happy Ramadan...I have missed the fast because for physical issues. I plan to fast next month, insha'Allah. Pray for me as you are in my prayers. The doctor found a spot on my lung on an X-Ray. I am not sure where this medical revelation will take me, but I am assured fo God's mercy and compassion. I worry less for me than for my wife and children. My pulminologist appointment is 9.8.2009. I am sure that I will be undergoing tests ans such...perhaps my plans for a fast next month is not realistic, but they are my plans none-the-less. May God's peace be upon you all.

Salam.. actually when i was a 8 years old child, i have a toothpaste with strawberry taste and when i was fasting that time, i "accidentally" eat it when i'm brushing my teeth, and it's yummy p don't tell my parent!!! rotfl strawberry eat

I don't live there. But if i claim that Quran is a universal book, i have to explain this, at least to myself. If you take "light of the sun" as an indicator for "the beginning of the day" and "the end of the day" of a normal standard person, fasting time might be approx. from breakfast to dinner. i.e. in Riyad, in every season people break fasting at 1800 - 1900. When Quran was revealed, people may be was understanding the ayath as the beginning and the end of their days, remember they had no digital watches. I think that might apply to other cities as well. (i.e. in 538 As to the thief. Male or female, cut off his or her hands a punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime and Allah is exalted in power. , we do not understand the hands should be cut, but another meaning) Any other ideas?

So therefore Allah has blessed us with this month of Ramadan, with a book. When there is hope, when our hearts get energized with the remembrance of Allah, which is what gives us tranquility. Allah says, indeed in the remembrance of Allah do you get tranquility, and therefore your morals become better. You will find when a human being is agitated, when they're angry, when they're disturbed, their morals go out of whack, it goes out of focus. Your hulk becomes different. You become an annoyance. You start saying things you should not. You may not mean it. I may not mean it, in a state of anger, but people have witnessed it and therefore it's a disturbance in the nature that I'm presenting myself with. It disturbs my surrounding, and people tend to judge us on the basis of how we behave or misbehave. Therefore it's essential for us, that if we're going to win in this world, then there's nothing more important to us than for our selves to be elevated, and the world should respect us. Why do people go for money? Why do people buy expensive cars? Why do they buy fancy homes? They want to be comfortable, but they also want to let the rest of the world know how good they are, so that they should be respected. At the end of the day, nothing is more important to an individual on a practical level, than being respected. Even children, many times children misbehave in our communities, even within families, it's because they're not respected. Parents and adults do not respect the children. By the same token, of course, children in turn don't respect their parents. But wisdom dictates that the first one to initiate respect should be the adult, because the adult has already learned the ways of respect. A child that's disrespectful, you can't expect them to be respectful, because they don't know the right way. So it's up to you and I as adults to respect them well, to talk nice to them, to welcome them properly, to speak with them with a kind tongue, and to teach them the art of respect. All of these are practical, pragmatic lessons in Islam through this level of fasting and remembrance of Allah. Therefore you see Allah has blessed us. When damage takes place, when wars take place like what's happening today, when lives are being taken left, right and center by the thousands, these are trials and tribulations, that if you and I don't have a long term vision, if we're not pegged properly, if we're not grounded properly, and if we don't have a long term vision, our iman will go astray. Our faith will lose its direction. We will become angry with the world. We will become very annoyed. And then the minute we become angry, it vibrates in us, it causes diseases in us. You will see so many studies done, psychological studies, that one of the largest causes of most diseases is self-inflicted. The mind is a very powerful thing. It's so powerful, it has its own ways of curing itself. It's a masterful creation. And Allah is saying to us, you want to be healthy, don't you? You want to be respected, don't you? You want to be calm. You don't want to lose your temper. You want to be respected, don't you? Sure. Allah says, we created man in the best of form, meaning your disposition and mine has been designed to be very healthy, very moral, very beautiful, inward and outward. It's full of energy, positive energy! A smile. Look at the smile we put on, when we show our beautiful teeth. Allah made our teeth good. Take care of it. Brush it. Look at the animal kingdom, there's no animal that can smile. Only humans can smile, and what a powerful thing. Just a smile, wireless, it changes our hormones, it affects our chemistry, it makes us feel different, it changes our thinking pattern. It shocks us, yet it's only just a movement of muscles in one direction.

Peace siki, Here are the reasons that made me change my opinion regarding this arabic term shahar. First of all , through out quran , where ever the word is used weather you translate it as month or full moon, Both make sense and do give out logical sentence meanings, However at couple of places Full moon makes more of sense. 1; in 2-185 the word used is shahad , which correctly translates as "seeing some thing", One can not see a month, where as one can see the full moon. To know is to see and one can know without physically seeing. The blind and people living in cloudy weather also fast. 650 Say "Do the blind and the seeing become equal, so do you not think?" 2- 97-1 says that quran was revealed in one night , so it becomes insignificant for that event to stretch into a whole month, Quran being sent down on the night of qadar , which happened to be shaha ur ramadhan or the full moon night of scorching heat makes perfect sense. Yes, started that night, did the entire download complete? When did these events take place, same night? 3124 When you say to the believers "Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord extends (supplies) you with three thousand from the angels sent descending?" 663 And when the prophet confided to some (of) his wives an information, so when she informed with it (others) and God made it apparent on (to) him, he made some of it known and he opposed from some, so when he informed her with it, she said "Who informed you (of) this?" As start of the periods, or coming of the blood is an event /marker, but in 65-4 in case of women who are old not to have periods or whose periods are irregular, and as such cannot rely upon this event. As duration between two periods is approx equal to a period between two full moons, so for such women, God substitutes shahar for menses, to start her waiting count, "this makes absolute sense". 4- Moreover , if we take shahar as a month then the waiting days of these women (menopausal, ) increases by 29 days more than a fertile women, This does not make sense, as to why should God increase the waiting period of old women ? if at all, there had to be a difference , It should have been opposite. Obviously, women and their periods are all over the place depending on the woman. lol Especially when they get older, so waiting time is increased to insure they are not pregnant. I am sure there are some more , but at present i can only remember above. Yes plenty like fasting anywhere from 29-59 days (2 full moons) depending on date when Quran says exactly 2 months. 492?and freeing/liberating a believing neck, so who does not find, so fasting two months following each other, a repentance from at God, and God is knowledgeable, wise/judicious.

salam alikum brothers and sister, you are so right about the luner and solar calenders. every lunar yr looses almost eleven complete days, so to make up for the loss you have to add 1 month ( the naseea month mentioned in the quran in 936) every 32 month, this way the lunar calender keeps up with the solar calender this way ramadan comes in the begining of the fall season for the NH and in the begining of the spring season for the SH. this way muslims can fast at the same time and break fast at the same time all over the world in a cool weather season. Some of the holy days in Judaism and Christianity are based on the old lunar calendar which is why they move every year.

I'm confused now. I read the Ramadan chapter in The Natural Republic which suggests that Ramadan is in December. Some define Ramadan as the hottest month (which for me would be July). Those who follow the lunar calendar say that the month of Ramadan comes earlier each year. ??? Quran was sent down in Arabia not in america ;D

The month of Ramadan (lunar calendar) is "fixed". You dont have to look for any crescent as the sectarians do. God's system allows for calculation of when the Ramadan is going to be in the next few years without looking for the crescent. So it is "fixed". It is the sectarians who are causing the problems/confusions by asking people to physically sight the moon. Yes! 2189 They ask you concerning the crescents. Say They are but signs to mark fixed periods of time for people, and for Pilgrimage. It is no virtue if you enter your houses from the back It is virtue if you fear Allah. Enter houses through the doors And fear Allah That you may prosper. I do not see fasting or "Ramadan" in God's response when crescents are being enquired about, and this is the only verse that mentions crescents. Ponder on "enter the houses through their doors".

Moreover, counting days is not very useful for measuring large units of time most of us, especially in urban environments, need to work with larger blocks like months and years. Following the movements of celestial bodies is a pretty good way to mark time unlike crops, animals, and human bodies, the movements of the sun, the moon, and the stars are consistent, long-term, easy to track, and unaffected by natural disasters. The sun and the moon each provide certain advantages and disadvantages for calendar-making. A lunisolar system tries to combine solar and lunar systems to achieve the advantages of both. Solar calendars are used in most of the industrialized world today. The ancient Egyptians and the imperial Romans both used variations of the system that we use; in fact, many of our month's names are borrowed from the Romans. Solar calendars track the movement of the sun across the sky, in a path that astronomers call the ecliptic. Such a calendar is keyed almost exactly to the movement of the earth around the sun in space, creating a convenient link between the calendar and the seasons.
