,Peace I intrepret this verse to mean God is not the exclusive property of one religious tradition.The verse begins "God is the light of the heavens and the earth," to me this means that God is the source of all transandent "encounters".Let me elaborate.Thourghout history and in nearly every culture there have been men and some women who have claimed to encounter a transandence.In Buddism this is known as "nirvana" and in Monotheistic faiths this iniffable,and indescrebable transandence is called "God".So all religions thus are correct since thier source is God.Yet every religion is very different.So how can they have encountered the same God.The answer is they intrepated the experience differently.And since all intrepations are basically correct all religions are correct.Contineing "The parable of this light is,as it were,that of a niche containing a lamp, the lamp is enclosed in glass,the glass shining like a radiant star".The first line showed that God is the source of all religions this line shows the light is "like a radiant star" meaning that the glow of revelation is always powerful and mankind will always experience divine love."A lamp lit from a blessed tree an olive tree that is neither of the east nor the west".These one is the most important line.The olive tree was from antiquity consedered a sign of peace.So God lits his light and since he is describing himself as olive oil a sign of peace God is peace.Also this line has another meaning that signifies religious plurlism.The olive tree signifies the continuity of revelation,which springs from one root (God) but branches into a rich and beutifully diverse religious experiences that cannot be confined to a single locale in other words "neither of the east nor the west".Now to the end of the ayah"the whereof is so bright that it would well-nigh give light of itself,even though fire had not touched it".Meaning that God's love is never extungused.The verse ends "light upon light".Thus my understanding of this highly mysticly verse of the Quran is that it is a procalmation of religious pluralism.And one can fully understand this verse's signifagence when read with "Unto every people we have gaven a differnt way of life".So these verses procliam brotherhood and peace.So what about the Quran's condemnation of idol worship.I think the Quran is condeming are stone idols of ego,greed,and selfishness.So what about the Quran saying Unbeilvers will go to hell.To my knowledge the root for Kafir KFR also mean not accepting a kind gift or hiding a seed.So it can also be translated as Ungratful.And there are many ungratful muslims(so they are Kafir).So then what about the Quran condemnation of Jews for not follwing God.Well taken into context these verses become pluralist.Resarch by scholars show arabian Jews were almost like Gentiles.They even may have worshiped arabian gods.So the Quran is just saying that they should follow their Torah.The Quran condemns the trinity as polytheism.Well this to can be better understud using context.The Quran is not condeming the trinaty as held by all christians per se.Instead it is condeming christian Byzantine imperialism by using the trinaty.Now back to the ayah I think it preachs radical pluralism and brotherhood.Insigna I think your intrepation is good but I think it robs the ayah of its mystic quality.But then agian my intrepretation can be wrong.This immensly amazing verse may never be explained peace.

Salaam Johnny k, I thought i would share a dream I had a few years ago since this thread is about dreams. I had it just after I embraced Islam about 3 years ago. In the dream I was with my wife and my family back in Canada. We were walking through a city which I recognized as Calgary Alberta. I was suddenly aware that it was time for the dzuhur prayer and my wife and I decided to go and find a Masjid so we could salaat. We walked a while and could not find a Masjid or Musholla. Then suddenly I heard the Adzan call so I followed the sound. We soon came to the source of the call to prayer and i saw that it was coming from a semi-large building but it did not look like any traditional Masjid I had seen. It looked more like and average building you would find downtown in any average Canadian city. When we went inside we found a number of people mulling around but there was no salaat happening. I then realized that we were not in a Masjid but inside a museum and the adzan call I heard was an audio recording. I joined a small group of people who were listening to a caretaker of the museum talk. The caretaker was telling a story of how this sound recording was what the Muslims USED TO call out just before they would pray. It was spooky. As if Islam was just a relic and didn't exist anymore. Disappointed, I left and continued my search for a place to salaat. After not being able to find a suitable place and fearing we would miss the salaat, I decided to ask a local shop keeper if we could salaat on the patch of grass outside and in front of his shop. He said this was fine. I then went to the patch of grass in front of the shop and began to lead the salaat with my wife behind me. Before I could even begin Al Fatiha, a stranger came up to me and asked if he could join. I nodded, he took a place behind me and I started again. As I began to say Al Fatiha I could hear the man begin to speak aloud to my wife. Asking questions and such. I thought this was strange but tried to continue. However the man continued to try and disturb my wife while she did salaat. I then turned around and said to my wife that this man is not a Muslim and told her to ignore him and also told the man to stop, but he refused. It was at this point that i somehow realized that he was a satan or jinn. At the moment I realized this I pulled my wife away from him and the jinn somehow knew that I knew who he really was. He became angry and attacked me. As he attacked me, about half a dozen other men (Jinn) suddenly appeared around me, all ready to attack. At first i began shouting Allahu Akbar to try and fight them off. Although these words seem to push them back it did not stop them and they continued attacking me. Then suddenly i realized that I must say La Illaha Il Allah. I began repeating this over and over again and each time I did, the very words would strike out from me with such force that it would destroy these Jinn people. Sometimes they would be thrown back with incredible force, other times their heads would be decapitated from their body. After repeating the shahadah a number of times, all the Jinn men were destroyed. It was at this point I awoke in a cold sweat. For a long time I didn't know what this dream meant but I think I do now. Peace

Salaam HD, I agree. My last post was very theoretical. It's mostly just an opinion based loosely on evidence i have discovered in Al Quran. I'm always looking for proofs inside the Perpetual Miracle that is Allah's last testimony to man. I too don't agree with many man made interpretations of the psyche which is why I am exploring Quran to find the answers to this. I began studying psychology, probably because my mother majored in it, but i quickly lost interest. I believe our human definitions of ego, life, personality, consciousness etc can be perfected if we search within Al Quran for the answers. I am currently leaning towards the idea that our roh is consciousness and true or divine personality which contains the capacity for free choice or free will. And that the nafs are our physical and temporary representation of this. I believe that we maintain what can be likened to two personalities. The first is our divine or eternal personality which is our roh. The second is the conditioned personality of the nafs. This nafs personality develops as we grow and is conditioned by the physical world around us. In 99% of peoples lives it ends up being the dominant personality whereas it's true position is to be like a slave or servant to the higher personality of roh. I also think that what we call genes are also conditioned by the physical world and the nafs. Like all physical manifestations, I think genes too are only an effect of the greater cause. A mere shadow of divine reality. But again this is still just theory. I am slowly trying to piece evidence together to support it from Al Quran, but if Al Quran reveals contrary to this I would be forced to abandon it and seek other possibilities. peace

Far be it from me to propose that I'm a rabid fan, but do go on... I'll try to repost that story in another thread and I'll also share the story of the Smell sometime this week when I have time. I posted it here because I have had many experiences here in Indonesia that defy what we know as Science. I think of myself as more of a realist but sometimes I am completely stumped by things that can happen in our daily lives. Perhaps science will one day understand it all. Peace

Peace, I need to make a correction here. The platypus does NOT share birdlike features. Although the shape of the bill is much the same as that of certain birds, possibly due to convergent evolution, it is made of an entirely different substance and is SOFT nlike the hard keratin bills in birds which have them. Infact if the platypus had a beak made of keratin it would pose a problem to evoltuionary biology since mammals are not upposed to sare these distinct bird features. The rest is fine. GOD Bless!

I would translate it according to the context, but my main translation would be "Universal Forces".

Peace all, Interesting article. I think one could argue either side of this issue with some evidence from the qur'an. Personally, I don't see the difference between tampering with genetics and, let's say, tampering with clogged arteries. Micro vs. macro, I guess. I'd just be careful in buying into a concept just because it supposedly "could save lives". That's whay Dr. Richard Gatling said was his motivation for inventing the machine gun. Peace "zenje", I guess the question - do animals have soul is redundant then? D Peace JK- No it is not since even if some animals might be classified as having a soul/nafs and could thus NOT BE KILLED ANAMORE, others would still be there where we could be sure that they do NOT have a soul eg cows, sheep, goats, etc. Also there are always certain cognitive and/or other functions which the brains of other species than ourselves could perform better than us. This does NOT however mean that they are overall more intelligent or intellectual since otherwise the chimps would already be sailing through space on star trek but they dont even have bicycles so to draw unreasonable conclusions from these tests would not be right. It's people like al gore and the Rothschilds that make me suspicious about man made global warming, when you look into their backgrounds its hard to believe anything these people say. On top of the fact that many scientists (especially meteorologists) say that we don't affect climate change. Al gore is a corprate puppet, and he was campaigning for GM food (congressmen Dennis Kucinich said not a shred of evidence exists to prove that GM food is safe) but since Americans are the guinea pigs it would be interesting to see what happens. As with any scientific theory and political view people are entitled to their own opinion, the last thing I expect from adults is childish name calling. peace.
