'Amadin seems to be "pillars" or "columns" Tarawnaha means "that you see" So, is this verse saying the sky is built with invisible pillars i.e. "with pillars that you cannot see"? Parwez has written in detail about the concept of "Will" THE LAW OF DIVINE WILL The Arabic root ? - - ? is the source of words like ? - - - ? etc. Traditionally, it is translated into Urdu as ?to wish?. This inaccurate translation (and its interpretation) is the cause of so much confusion regarding the question of destiny. Let us first look carefully at it. The Arabic work ? ? means to have an intention (to do something). Though some linguists take? ? and ? ? to be synonymous in meaning, Intention & Will there is a semantic difference. ? ? is to intend to do and ?? is the realization of intention. Hence, ?? (thing) is the resulting product of intention. Therefore, the two terms ( & ) must be viewed with that difference regarding Allah, even though they are commonly taken to mean to want / to wish / to intend. For example, ?(Allah?s) His amr is that when He intends to do something He says to it, ?Be?, and it is.? (36/82). Chapter (2) of this book dealt in detail with the creation plan of Allah. It consists of two stages ? ?amr? and ?khalq?. About ?amr?, I quote from my work Lughaat-al-Quran ?The process of CAUSE & EFFECT is a matter of common observation. Peace and bump, It can be quite interesting to ponder on the things we do, that we take as part of our faith or religion. In all truthfulness, very much is ritual, which in turn means that it is actually repetition... recycling of old material. What is a ritual actually? If you think about it, at the foundation and source of any ritual, there is a thought-form that is repeated. Whether we do physical movements or verbal or mental recitations, they are repetitions of a thought-form that we execute in our mind over and over. It's a mental pattern, a thought-form, which involves executing words, thoughts, movements and similar. It's repetitive and mechanical in essence, even though we may spice it up with emotions or other things that make it seem more genuine and real. Why do we do this? How can this benefit us? Why would we be required to mechanically repeat ANYTHING, even the God?s names? The thing I?m questioning is not WHAT we say and do, but WHY, WHEN and HOW we do it. If we don?t do it out of inspiration in the moment of Now, then isn?t it dead... mechanical, without spirit?? Again, this is not about what to do and say, or what to avoid, but it is rather the reasons for doing it. Did we follow our inner guidance or did we follow a mechanical habit? Will we benefit from repeating old things, or will we benefit from expressing ourselves genuinely in the manner that arises in the moment, expressing that which comes out from inside, that which comes with spirit in the Now-moment?? I think these things can be valuable to ponder, in order to get to know oneself better and to evolve and get closer to one's real self and subsequently to get away from the disconnected and separatist, egoic mind that doesn?t want us to open our eyes and be awake so that we can walk the straight path. Yes agreed. The basis of the philosophy of science itself was Aristotelian logic till relatively recently. I don't disagree with logical systems but with the AUTHORITY of logical systems. I have seen quranists say something is 'logical' hoping to acquire authority of interpretation. It's like George Bush using the word 'democracy' hoping to acquire legitimacy to invade Iraq! Or better yet, this is a 'quranic' understanding (and everyone else's is an interpretation) which ,unless the Quran becomes a walking talking entity, is simply nonsense. These manoeuvres will kill off the free spirit of interpretation which I believe the Quran seeks. Yeah, don't get me wrong, logic and reason are important. It's that we realise that we can be flawed at times and that our knowledge is ultimately granted by Allah who I believe steers us in the right direction. I suppose in some ways in my comments I am addressing an atheistic perspective that views logic as this tool created through a random process for use in a natural world that we then use to understand other things such as the Quran. Exactly. To me, this is because the Quran is a spiritual TOOL rather than a cut and paste board. Instead of ripping out verses here and there trying to form a doctrine, we need to slowly take in the Quran in the measure in which it was given, which to me is the chapter (most people say surah). The current prevalent method of reading the Quran (dictionaries plus grammar = meaning) is to me like appreciating a painting by seeing where paint and brushes came from without ever looking at the picture. That's a really nice analogy and way to think about it. With the Quran, it really is about appreciating it as a whole as well as the parts themselves.

But why did SCHOLARS have to write additional books? Isn't that Gods job? And why did the scholars have to wait so long? Shouldn't they have done this during the life of Prophet Muhammad? Or during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr or Umar at least if it was commanded by God? Why did they have to wait until all these men died and a whole new Caliphate took power? And most importantly... Why is there no mention of following Hadith books in the Quran itself? God doesnt write books, people do. God inspires only people He has chosen to perform solely the duty of proclamation. Some people dont like that, and want to share in that duty without being authorized. Some people like that, but still want to share in that duty, while thinking they are authorized. Some people are gullible or evil, and follow the above mentioned. Some people were born in a society where the above mentioned are influential, and follow them.

Salaam everyone, Imagine there's a lake, this lake hidden deep within a forest, this forest filled with fruits and thorns. The Quran is the shore surrounding the lake, the forest is the sunnah that exists in the world that leads to the lake - in hadith, in minds, in tradtions the thorns are the false hadith, the misquotes, the false prophets, all the error that stands in the path. Allah is the light and creator of the lake and the forest and the metaphor and my computer and so on. I was trapped in a prison in virginia as a juvenile, had been raised in a muslim family but was a hardcore follower of scientism (the idea that science has the final say in truth and reality) All I had was a Quran and a few simple suras memorized. I studied the arabic alphabet and then would stare for hours at a single side by side english arabic translation. Going back and forth between the memorized sound, the forms of the letters I now knew, and the meaning in english. (I began doing my 5 prayers and even fasted one ramadan) Few years later I was released and totally abandoned what I had come to love and know. The very root meaning of the word Kufr (ka fa ra - to cover up/conceal/reject) in exchange for the pleasures of friendship that I had before incarceration. Inevitably those pleasures died just as the growth the tiller loves turns to dust. Now I sit with the yusuf ali translation and everytime there's something ambiguous I first find the verse on the corpus quran site. Salam Emil. It seems your translation, like many others, has a few extra words that are not in the 'Arabic text. The "revival of the moon" seems to be referring to a new moon, and this is what this translator has translated "shahr" as, but then he/she says to "fast through the month". It appears to quite inconsistent in the selection of equivalent words. I think my initial question also has to be linked with the meaning of "shahr". Once the definition of "shahr" becomes obvious, then the phrase "falyasum'hu" will make more sense. As of now, based on the definitions of the root word I found in Lane's Lexicon, it seems that the word "shahr" can either refer to "new moon" or "full moon". I would say based on the root definition being attached with "obvious, apparent, public" it seems that "full moon" fits that description a lot better than "new moon", as the "new moon" is anything but "apparent. On the other hand, as far as I can tell, and maybe I'm just extremely ignorant in this regard, even though all the literature I have read on the phases of the moon confirm that the "full moon" happens on one particular night, there are about three nights where I honestly cannot differentiate the moons and they all look full to me. Discussing the issue with my wife last night has made me think more about this subject as she reminded me that there must be a simple explanation that is straightforward and easy to understand.

All those verses for instance where God may punish people using other humans as an instrument; but in truth, the only clear cut verse I know is the one quoted above - 37164. Normally when it comes to questions like this I would be able to do a quick search and rack off verse after verse but you try searching for usage of "We" in the quran P. I'll have to do some reading in any case so I shall get back to you God willing. As Ahmed Bilal says in any case; that 'We' refers to the higher forces incl. God who cause natural phenomena to occur. But if you read some verses before and after, to see who is "talking" in 37164, then for sure it can not include humans (see for example 37171). Salam jtc i think personally, it can have two meanings either it points to the 'Sabbath' as youm al Gumua , that we should celebrate with a Salat (worship), but in contrast to the Sabbath, as it is practiced, the Quran don't suggest an absolute ban on working. I do not mean Sabbath= Saturday - it is the 'seventh' day from the beginning of a new lunar cycle and shifts so through the gregoranic calendar within a week. the other meaning The 'day' means 'time' and the 'meeting' points to the annual gathering of Hajj. In this interpretation, however, there are problems with the second part of the verse, and by the fact that only a Salat is mentioned. also then the hajj would have to be limited - the Qur'an however states that it can be made within four months. Another unsolved problem I see with a look of the mention 'the great Hajj (al hajj al akbar)' - there is also a smaller Hajj? And what is this small Hajj and at what time? i'am sure other people have different opinions peace

Peace all, I have problems with both of these understandings, but based on my very limited understanding of the 'Arabic language, I do not see any other linguistic possibilities for different meanings.
