Allah knows everything you do. When Allah ask you "Qul" means "Say" you can read back the same words in Salaat. That means, you cannot ask Allah to "Say" Allah is One. If you want to use Sura Ahad in Salaat, you have to say from after "Qul", that means you have leave the word "Qul" then you can say it. You are right in pointing to this difference of reciting and saying reciting as reading from the book is different from saying/reciting verses from the Koran by heart. Still any verse or word from the Koran can be said during the -salat- as long this helps to remember God. I agree with your point that it might be better to skip the word -qul- when reciting one of the last three chapters during the -salat-, but also this is not obligatory. We can enjoy the freedom of choice when the Creator gives it. Brother the aayaats are for some special case not for normal Salaat. And I believe even 629-10 is also not a group-Salaat. I know, people have to gather but they have to perform Salaat individually. This is how I understand. verse 629-10 - the communal middle prayer verse 4102 - the prayer with the messenger It is correct that verse 4102 is about -salat- in case of danger - but from it we can deduce that the -salat- can be done in a group. The special ruling of this verse seems to be that the group should be divided and take turns to pray together with the prophet. The communal -salat- seems to be a normal event and is not restricted otherwise anywhere in the Koran. Verses 629-10 indicate that there can be a communal prayer when believers happen to be together. But since the relevant verses relate to the presence of the prophet, one could say that the communal prayer is not an important issue. It might be up to the believers to pray alone or in a group. Anyway the Koran does not forbid to pray in a group. Allah said 245 245 And seek help through patience and through the contact prayer. It is a difficult thing, but not so for the humble. This means, everyone has their own problems and need help from Allah for the same. How can they seek help from Allah in a group Salaat? And I don't see any other aayaats saying about group Salaat. Verse 245 may refer to the ritual -salat-, but can also refer to the general bond, as in verse 2945. The bond with God in general gives us true aid and prohibits immorality and vice. The ritual -salat- itself alone does not prohibit immorality and vice. Performers of the ritual prayer can behave very differently. Rather in the total -salat- in following all the relevant commands of the Koran and not in the ritual prayer alone, we might find help. Even when verse 245 refers only to the ritual -salat- then a communal form of prayer would not block that one can seek help in it. Any prayer or remembrance of God, in a group or alone can have benefits. The mere remembrance of God can have several positive psychological effects. Actually verse 2014 orders us to remember God alone during the ritual -salat-, and not to focus on the personal problems that one might have, this could distract us. After or before the -salat- throughout the day, one can ask God because of personal problems when one feels this is needed. The ritual -salat- is to remember God alone. Whatever the society is currently, it would definitely influence the outcome of politics due to the pressure from the people. Traditionally I think they may have been similar tbh I dunno much on the history. A lot of western moral values were influenced by the church but the issue of separation of church from state came about. politicians would still be influenced by their beliefs though over time their values changed due to social norms and intentionally detaching from the church. So this detachment provided innovation of new ideas and peoples beliefs changed hence different values/moral thoughts. for example their values have changed to individualism; do what you want, be what you want doesn?t matter what anyone(or doctrine) says. so today they have become accepting of homosexuality, abortion, euthanasia, etc so they may be seen as more ethical for accepting/tolerating the diversity, less focus on the spiritual side of things. Though of course not everyone fits that criteria. I assume eastern culture is perceived as stricter and more of a dictatorship, ensuring values are maintained by passing down the authority to kin. They seem to value spirituality more than individualism. Honour/dignity is much more emphasised rather than individualism. Either way I think both cultures would have viewed themselves as great and would want to maintain their heritage to a certain extent. All value health and sustenance though maybe some would go far and do something unethical for their needs/wants like start a war or compel people to slavery of some sort. What are your thoughts?

I didn?t mention 3356 which recognises submission in totality, however traditionalist seem to think it?s is in relation to blessing the prophet (465 uses same terminology )

Salam Wakas, What should all this tell us? To be ultra cautious, so we dont repeat history! To be proactive in terms of verification, seeking truth, applying thought/logic etc and not blindly follow anything... because the consequences could be huge. Yep consequences are huge. Why don?t they verify, because of numbers ?appeal to popularity? comfort. Why not even ask "which hadith?" Perhaps if one did a study on "hawa" in AQ they might realise it is always contrasted to following divine revelation / God's Word/system. Thus, anything else could be "hawa", including man-made religious law or religious leaders. In fact, it could even be argued this is a very common form of "hawa" in AQ! Good point I never looked at the word and the contrast. *adds to the ?to do list?. I?ll post it here in future GW.. just for reference It is ironic to think that it is perhaps the other way around, that actually majority of Muslims are following their desires etc. because AQ is built in such a way that it will narrow down the meaning/guidance in such a way that only one view is possible, or if more than one, it will provide the limits. For example, AQ smashes the marrying pre-puberty tradition/belief (hence almost all commentators not using AQ to justify this view), thus if someone goes against this, they would be following their "hawa". There are many examples like this. So, it is not black/white, i.e. it cannot be said that they follow "hawa" and we do not follow "hawa", or vice versa. I think part of the problem is people?s limited knowledge which leaves gaps in thoughts. It could lead us to upholding the view (with the gap) therefore possibly upholding hawa. We already are! The movement is growing, no doubt about it. Take note from a non-violent revolutionary who defeated the world's strongest empire "First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win" ~Gandhi. I think they take us as a serious threat! Rather, a serious potential threat. Not as, seriously trying to adhere to guidance. AQ talks loads and loads about seeking knowledge, methodology etc. In fact, so much, it would take one weeks to read and study all occurrences. This book talks a lot about certain aspects, in a formal manner. Also see this for a brief. Weeks, months and longer? sounds interesting (why are the useful books expensive!). If I could promote the use of logic as supported by Quran.. that would be useful but then they?d need to study logic. Or have an inclination to it.. Does every Traditional Muslim commentator follow this approach? No. Does every forum member here follow this approach? No. It?s wrong for me to expect people to follow all the same approach but sunnis seem to think they do.. (follow the same approach). All words stemming from a Root share the basic semantic feature. The concept denoted by English noun and verb "fear" or "awe" is not the component of semantic domain of this Root. Grand Qur'aan is itself the best lexicon for all its important words and terms. It renders the meanings of its important words explicit by using it with such collocates that leave no ambiguity for the reader to comprehend the semantics of text. Peace Wakas, Good/nice analogy. I think one of the biggest secrets to improving ones critical thinking skills is to discard/abandon things one has learned in the past, in order to get an empty mind. As the saying goes, "Only an empty bowl can be filled." Also, I think one can improve ones critical thinking skills by increasing ones knowledge about different things. The Quran seems to suggest that reasoning-abilities are related to ones level of knowledge. Quran 2943 Such are the examples We cite for the people, but none reason except the knowledgeable.
